The beat, the pulse, the heart of Manti High began once again at 8:00 a m. on August 22, 1985. This heart included many aspects of MHS. The enthusiasm born of participation in club activities, class competitions, rowdy sporting events, invigor- ating class discussions brought the mere beat to a throbbing rhythm felt by all. For the freshmen, the beat had just begun, and for the seniors, the beat would continue for the rest of their lives. 6 STUDENT OFFICERS Seniors. . . The Heart Of Manti High Glen Squire Pres. We remember the basketball team beating North Sanpete by one point at State, and the horror of first year Algebra. Then there was the toiling over the poem Ulysses , and we will certainly never forget cheering for our champion girls basketball team. As Juniors, we struggled with fundraisers and decorations to make our prom, Heaven , a shining memory. Then tragedy occurred and we lost two members of our class, Shane Stewart and Wayne Ludvigson. This sad memory will be with us always. Now, as Seniors, we dominate the homecoming activities and bask in the glory of a victorious football team. We are looking forward to the future with optimism and confidence. We thank Manti High School; the education and the memories will enrich us for the rest of our lives. We are the class of '86'- we will succeed. Each year our M.H.S. faculty selects an outstanding senior to represent each area of study for the Sterling Scholar program. These students can further their aca- demic recognition when they compete at region with other Sterling Scholars from many other schools. Our seniors always seem to represent Manti High School well, and their hard work often pays off. These students often re- ceive scholarships and cash awards for this hard work. With all of the rewards for their ambitions, they cannot help but be successful in the future. 33 Straight From the Heart With Languages ---------------V Don't laugh! This isn't a fun class. Sing a Spanish song. Students hard at work! Mr. Kimball is getting ready for his Spanish class and his new office duties. Did you get that? In any language, it is still blah ! Senior English is so fun! Aren't we a good class? This year Manti High added a new language to our curriculum. Mr. Bolli, a professor from Snow College, is coming over to teach German to our students. Now we have English, Spanish and German. Every student can choose a language that interests them. ■V--------'V 35 Pulling Those Heart Strings With. . . Music. Instructor; Ro- seann Higham 37 Although Miss Elaine Hawker is a new teacher this year, she has proven herself to be a wonderful addition to the faculty. As one can see, the students participating in Drama have won various awards and trophies while representing our school. The presentation of Tom Sawyer was also a success with the help of Miss Hawker and Mr. Bill Thompson, who also teaches the new class called Stage Craft. Together, they chose a cast and production crew that did a very fine job. 38 This year M.H.S. Students expressed their creativity and talents through art. They did many things, such as, working with pencil, charcoal, watercolor and crayons. Several of their creations were displayed throughout our school. We had some of our students take their artwork on to competitions where they did very well. Take Heart With Art 39 Industrial Arts is one of the many career- oriented areas that Manti High has to offer. In metal, wood, and auto classes, students learn skills that could help them in choosing voca- tions. In addition to learning skills, the stu- dents also have fun displaying their talents in the different areas. Shop Mechanical Hearts! 41 Social Studies expands our knowledge of people and places and helps us plan for the future by learning of the past. Mr. Erickson, Mr Mickelsen, and Mrs. Bond are the people who are devoting their time and knowledge on behalf of the students. We are all in debt to them for giving of their talents. Social Studies Circulation 42 Warming Our Hearts Through Books At Manti High School we are proud of our Media Center. With the help of the librarian, Mrs. Erickson, one can find a variety of books for all types of people. Hearts And Other Parts Science. . 44 Science Though MHS students are required to have two credits of science, they do have a choice of what kind of science class they take. For instance, students can take Chemistry and can learn equations and formulas, memorize oxidation numbers and do various lab experiments, or they can take Biology and study cell structures, human anatomy, the animal kingdom, genetics and plants. Students interested in electronics or some type of engineering can find Physics helpful. Agricul- tural Science will always be useful for those students choos- ing to stay and farm in Sanpete. All these sciences are benefi- cial as well as interesting. 45 Getting On The Right Beat This year we are lucky to have special programs taught by three different teachers: Mrs. Cox. Mr. Ludvigson. and Mrs. Fredricks. These teachers help resource students get back on the right track of education. Getting on the right beat will help the students become successful in their other classes and possibly in their later lives. Physical Education Strengthens The Heart Inside and outside, the boys' P.E. program involves the boys in a variety of activities, such as, football and basketball with Coach Braithwaite, and weight-lifting with Coach Gent. All these programs help prepare the boys for their favorite sports, or just gives them a welcome break from classes. 47 Girls' P.E. Makes The Heart Throb P.E. is always a welcome change from sitting in a classroom Under the direction of Miss Jarvis, the girls learn many sports. Throughout the year they learn football, basketball and volleyball, to name a few. They also learn many ways to keep in shape. The girls jog, dance and exercise together which makes the class even more enjoyable. 48 Cast And Crew Of Tom Sawyer Tom Sawyer Director: Elaine Hawker Music Director Bill Thompson Asst. But look at them now! Educated and ready for what their future holds for them. Their different personalities will put variety into our world. Look out world! The Class of 1986 is on its way up! The students make friends and live life to the fullest, as anyone can see. Heart to Heart -that's what Manti High is all about. One can see it in our eyes, our pride, and our hearts. Being a Templar means many things, but most importantly, it is self-realiza- tion. One has to know who he is before he can know what he wants out of life. This year the Templars' spirit was shining bright and was rekindled with such burning desire to be the best we could be. We proved we were the best as we represented Manti High School! STUDENT LIFE 59 New students at Manti High are: Front row: Tracy Herhitz, Kerri Huffine, Heather Barnes, Krista Gidney, Sara Barker, Sara Smith. Back row: Justin Bond, Laura McIntyre, Cody White, Jolynne Christiansen, Rob Chesley, Carl Smith, and Daniel Gidney 60 The 1985-1986 football season was a smashing success at Manti High School. We came out of Region with a 4 and 4 record and were well on our way to State. In our first game at State, we defeated Emery with a score of 52-54 after 5 overtimes. That game is thought to be one of the highest scoring games in High School football history Robert Buck Gent was a new face on Manti's Football field. Taking the position of Head Football Coach, he taught our team that it takes a strong desire as well as skill to win football games. He is a welcome addition to our Manti High School faculty!!! 62 Front: Larry Cox, Ryan Olsen, Jamie Steck, David Nielson, Jason Baker, Tyler Neilson, Don Naylor. Coach Tom Reece and our own Manti High Wrestling team. With the dedication of our team comes a knowledge of sucking weight, long bus rides and the ever present fear of being slightly over-weight. But with the help of Coach Reece also comes the strong desire for victory, a word well known to our boys. Besides hosting a number of matches, we were also able to host an eight-team tournament, where two of our varsity weights both placed second. Both of these boys were also freshmen. We have a great team and know that in future years our wrestlers will continue to succeed. Is all this really worth it? Going down for the kill! Hey, we're casual! A little after school activity! Wrestling At M.H.S. WRESTLING 75 1985-86 Snow College Football Our community was provided with some additional excitement this year. Snow College, the junior college lo- cated in Ephraim, participated in the Mid-America Bowl against North Eastern Oklahoma in Tulsa. The game was played on December 7, 1985, and although only 344 people could go, there were many Badger fans listening to the KMTI broadcast of the game. Acting Hearts Of . . . ---------------------V This year at MHS we have the privilege to have a new drama teacher. Miss Elaine Hawker, who graduated from B.Y.U. Under her direction, several students participated in the Shakespeare Festival. Paul Beach took first place in mono- louge acts in this festival. Also, Tony Blauer, Teresa Thomas, Kristin Olsen, Tracy Mendenhall. Carrie Jensen, and Lance Mendenhall took third place in Sweepstakes at the Shake- spearean Festival. Congratulations to the success of the Dra- ma Club. 82 Drama Club J Honorable Beat The National Honor Society is busy this year with some very worthwhile projects. One project is sponsoring a child from Guatamala. Her name is Lilian, and the NHS had personal infor- mation about her in its display case. Another service project was one for needy families at Christ- mas. All the classes gave donations. For each donation given, a colored ornament was placed on the school's Christmas tree. Each class had its own color, and the class that had the most ornaments in its color won points toward the big end-of-the- year-activity which helped to create some competition. The donations generated from this project may have helped make Christmas more meaningful for needy families. The NHS also had a party on December 11, 1985. The mem- bers watched the video Brewster's Millions while they ate tacos, salads and desserts. It was a great evening with a big turnout. National Conventions of the FHA were held in Salt Lake City this year. Some of our students were able to attend these also with Mrs. Frischknecht. Every year the FFA has a breakfast for all its members. There is also a field day at Snow College in which the Future Farmers of MHS participate.
