Mr. Lynn Patterson was a new part of our school this year. Coming to Manti from Idaho was a big move, but an enjoyable one according to Mr. Patterson. In Idaho he was Principal of Bear River High School. While there he heard about the opportunity at Manti and thought it would be a challenge he would like to try. He applied and out of fifty applicants, Mr. Patterson was chosen. It has been exciting to have him for our new Principal. From all the students at Manti Mr. Patterson we're glad you are here. 4 PRINCIPAL Student Body Officers Student Body President - Rory Nielson Vice-President - Stephen Braithwaite Secretary - Kelly Larsen Activity Agent - Brenda Hansen 6 STUDENT OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS f). fV 9  jV PRES. - Jeff Bennion V. As eager young freshmen, we were un- certain of what to expect, but looked forward to the excitement of high school. After hearing the terrifying tales of freshmen initiation, some of us were considering bringing our parents on the first day of school. But we soon realized that being freshmen wasn't all that bad. Our Sophomore year came with new confidence. Now that we knew what high school was all about we were ready for anything! As this year pro- gressed, our class branched out, be- coming involved in many extra-cur- ricular activities. The end of the year came and eight members of our class were installed in NHS. As our Junior year dawned, the big event of the year would be the Junior Prom. As the Prom got closer, and clos- er, each girl had visions of going with her Dad, but the invitations came and the Prom was a great success. The sum- mer after our Junior year, a tragedy occured, KamRay Jenson lost his life in a motorcycle accident. He set an exam- ple and touched all of our lives. Could it be? Were we actually Sen- iors? Time had gone by so fast. We were now the leaders of the school and tried to live up to our responsibilities. Our graduation wasn't the end, but only the ' Beginning of the Best.'' The Team always played hard. To win was the prime goal, but even when we lost it was only by 2 or 3 points. Our team has never let the name Manti Templar down. This year we got a NEW MASCOT and it has helped the spirit at the games for both teams and fans. Coach Braithwaite has now been the MHS coach for over thirty years and his desire to win as well as his concern for character devel- opment in his team is well known to everyone. TEMPLARS ARE REALLY NUM- BER I BASKETBALL 47 Look To Tomorrow Todays Junior Varsity will be to- morrows Varsity. The J.V. teams have shown great enthusiasm and skill on the floor throughout the year. This year with a new coach was a challenge for both coaches and team members. They wanted to win the State Championship again and they wanted to play well. They went to work and at press time they were on their way to that second State Championship. Thanks Coach Goodwin and Coach Jarvis. Have no fear the templars are here, and they were ever since the begin- ning of the year. The team has worked hard to maintain their weight. It wasn't easy sacrificing all Moms home-made meals. The team also had to learn to control their sudden urges to go home, plop down in front of He-Man eating as much as they could instead of practicing after school. We have a great team this year. We have two members who are undefeated and on their way to state. We think our wrestlers are great! WRESTLING 53 A Change Of Pace Inside and out, girls and boys; all must take P.E. at sometime. It of- fers a welcome change from sitting in the classroom all day. The boys get in condition doing pushups and the girls stretch out with a little conversation. A Manner Of Speaking You might think that English is a lot of work, but really, once you set your mind to it, it is one of the easiest classes at MHS. We all speak the English language, and so it should be easy to understand, and, thanks to all the English teachers, we under- stood it even more. Thanks English Dept, for open- ing our English world a little bit more!! 60 LANGUAGE ARTS LANGUAGE ARTS 61 Are you bored with all your classes? Well, you don't need to be anymore . . . take Spanish! Spanish is the only foreign language taught at MHS by Mr. Kimball. It is a fun and exciting class that teaches students about Mexico. During the year they had lots of cultural experiences that helped them even more. After your first year in Spanish, you will want to take it again a second year, and a third year, because it is one class that no one will ever get tired of! His class is made up of talented students who would go nowhere without his direction. But, you don't have to have extraordinary talent to be in Speech or Drama. All you need is the will to be heard and to perform in front of an audience. Speech involves deep discussions about educa- tion, government and other fascinating topics. Dra- ma, on the other hand takes you into the world of make-believe. You can be whoever you wish and pretend to be one of your favorite characters or heros. As you can see Speech and Drama is a fun and exciting class. This class is hard, challenging and educational and one that helps you grow as a leader and a strong individual. Acting Up A Career 64 DRAMA-FORENSICS Art, The Wonders Of Creation In the field of Fine Arts, there are hundreds of different things you can draw, paint or develop. You can even create, using your own original ideas. Mrs. Criner is one of the new teachers at Manti High. She is a very talented lady who has great ideas in working with students. Art is a fun class to take, just talk to students who take it, they will tell you. Fine Arts is a field where new talents are found. ART 65 Stirring And Stitching Brooks and Mrs. F attach the food seriously. Unit 6 seems to have a problem. The day the bell rang long and shrill. An 8 foot Hoagie? 66 HOME ECONOMICS Along with all the good things learned in foods, clothing and Family Living, all of the students agreed that Mrs. F's stories topped the list for fun. Just what is the story about the yellow dress? When the weather turned cold, the temperature in the Home Ec. room seemed to go down also, maybe that's why Jaylene and Wendy enetered the Make It With Wool con- test. The food classes enjoyed a special treat when they barbecued outside and made Homemade ice cream to eat. The sewing classes had a good time making Boxer shorts for Christmas. One of the big changes the last few years has been boys taking Home Ec. with girls. It seems to make it more interesting for every- one. HOME ECONOMICS 67 Places To Broaden Our Minds S' 68 SOCIAL STUDIES AND MEDIA Freshman are very intelligent! So George, what are you afraid of? Daydreaming, will her prince come someday? History affects different people different ways. In Social Studies we learn about people and places, which helps us to understand the world around us. Imagine what it would be like if we knew nothing about the different cultures of the world. We certainly can, Brighten our future if we can learn from the past. Mr. Mickel- son and Mr. Erickson are the in- structors for these courses. The Media Center is coordinated by Mrs. Erickson. It is a good place to select a book, make a poster, see an Art display, or just Hang Out during the noon hour. Learning or sleeping that is the question. Mr. Mickelson, Get to work? Choke me with a cheeto. I wonder if I'll Ever be in the big league. MEDIA SOCIAL STUDIES 69 Expanding Our Technical Knowledge I'm not gonna touch that thing! Ah, the sweet smells of science; formaldehyde, frogs, bunsen burners, worms, sulphur, sharks. . We all have to take science sometime to graduate, and thanks to Mr. Good, Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Bessey, it's doubtful we'll ever forget it. On the other hand, will a freshman ever forget his first experience with geometry? The math department offered everything from basic math to trig. Teachers still fought off the ever present problem of the lost student in the corner saying, Huh. . OTII II1® Ml 70 MATH SCIENCE 71 And Wood Shop Many students participated in the field of Industrial Arts. Students found new talents and became better at old ones. They had many choices in this field such as auto, metal or wood shop. In Auto Shop they rebuilt a truck, took apart a car,' and even painted one. In Metal and Wood Shop, which was taught by a new teacher, Mr. Kent Larson, they had many choices such as building a cedar chest, cabinet, table, or even down to a simple hot plate. The students really enjoyed building new things. Even girls built new and exciting things for their Hope Chests. INDUSTRIAL ARTS 73 A Step Into Education Resource helps us take a new step in education. It takes many skills to be able to learn efficiently and Resource helps us to acquire those needed skills. It plays an im- portant part daily in helping us to catch up in our studies. It will help you with what you do not under- stand, and will get you back on the right track. Mr. Ludvigson and Mrs. Fre- dricks are the teachers in this area. The girls are very dedicated and have produced many winning teams through the years. This year has been an exceptional one with Tennis, Basketball, Volley- ball and Track. We are certainly proud of our girl athletes. DUNK'EM V  jf MANTI 78 GAA The Switch Is On Manti 84-85 The Lettermens Club is com- posed of all the boys in the school who have participated in a sport during the school year. They often sell hot dogs and trimmings at Letter-lighting in the fall to raise funds for equip- ment. Coach Braithwaite is the advisor to this club. LETTERMEN 79 Drama The Drama and Forensic Club helped students to gain self-confidence in front of a group, and to interpret characters. A lot of acting was done in drama, while working on scenes in one-act plays, musical productions, monologues, and readings. In forensics the students debated, and participat- ed in extempt and impromptus. The club mem- bers went to Cedar City for the Shakespeare com- petition and to the University of Utah for the Forensics meets, both region and state. On Janu- ary 5th they attended a workshop at Snow Col- lege. They were selected by the faculty on a 1-4 scale in the areas of leadership, service, and character. The candidates also had to have a 3.5 grade point average and keep the standards they were selected on or they were dropped from the club. Their records were reviewed each quarter. The club keeps 30 mem- bers and new members are selected to replace graduating seniors. The purpose of N.H.S. is to promote leadership, scholarship, and character in all students at M.H.S. Many projects were used to do this, one of which was the selection of Student of the Month. We worked hard on it, try- ing to make the deadlines, trying to capture everyone on camera, so that everyone would be in the yearbook at least once. We have captured stu- dents during their happy times, sorrowful times, and when they were hard at work. We hope to have the students look back in 10 years and enjoy it, and say that this year was a great year. CLARION • TRUMPET STAFF 89 The Future Politicians STATE CLOSEUP Under the direction of Mr. Mickelson seven students at- tended the State Closeup in Salt Lake City for two days. Eight students and Mr. Erickson flew to Washington D.C. in November to attend the National Closeup pro- gram for a week.
