Empty stomachs are then filled and the afternoon schedule begins. After school the custodians take over and the faithful buses arrive to transport the students to their homes. He filled the position left by Mr. Ivan Rowley. Mr. Warren main- tained his duties at the district office in part and spent the majority of his time at MHS. Mr. Warren was born and raised in Mapleton, Utah. He graduated from Springville High School, then attended Snow College where he made the all 1CAC basketball team. He went on a mission to Australia for two years, then attended Utah State University where he graduated and went on to BYU to receive his masters degree. In 1961 he started teaching and in 1966 he became Principal at Gunnison Elementary. In 1978 he was made Assistant Superintendant for the South Sanpete School District. He mar- ried Rula Thompson and they have four children. The Manti High School is by tradition, a necessary function of the lives of the young people of this valley. Our High School is here to prepare the youth for a better way of life. The goal is that every student achieve at his or her maximum potential. The administration and teachers are dedicated to making our school a place where students want to come and excel in the academics and activities. Besides class work, there are many opportunities to experience learn- ing through participation in things outside of the classroom. New members were installed in February. These students are chosen by the faculty for their achievements in the cate- gories of character, service, scholar- ship, and leadership. The main purpose of the Model United Nations club is to develop interest in International Affairs. This year the delegates had to study in detail the countries of Egypt and the Philippines. They represented these countries at the M.U.N. con- ference in April. They were as- signed to different committees, such as economics, defense, war- fare and security. They defended the country's stand on issues and problems. This year the students from Manti who went to Washington D. C. with the Close-Up program were: Melanie Larsen, Sandy Thatcher, April Daniels, DeeAnn Bean, Melanie Birch and Wendy Orton. They visited many public build- ings such as the Capital and the Supreme Court buildings. They were also there the week of Veter- ans Day and saw some of the cere- monies for the marines who died in Lebanon. The Future Farmers of Amer- ica, is a well organized club and one of the largest groups in the school. They participated in many activities. A trip to Snow College for the F.F.A. Field day, judging soils, animals, range and learning many things that will help them in the future, were all part of the pro- gram. The highlight of the year was F.F.A. Week when they selected the annual F.F.A. Sweetheart. Eight girls were chosen by the club to participate in this contest. Winter (skiing) 77 STERLING SCHOLAR The purpose of the Sterling Scholar program is To recognize high school seniors for scholastic excellence.” The competition is open to seniors in the high schools of Juab, Millard, North San- pete, Piute, Sevier, South Sanpete, Tintic and Wayne counties. Each school may nominate one student in each of the twelve categories. These students have been selected to represent Manti High School, and will compete in March with the other schools. They practice many hours for a good reason. Our team ranked top in the region. Keeping in the rhythm of the game they pulled off many victories. Their wholeheart goes into the fast and fun game.
