Text from Pages 1 - 132 of the 1983 volume:

The 1982-1983 theme for Manti High School is IT’S A MATTER OF PRIDE. This theme reflects the ingredi- ents that have made this school unique throughout its history in this community. The studentbody, faculty, administration, and alumnus display with pride the no- blest attributes of character, integrity, honesty, respect, and dignity. I am proud to have been able to serve Manti High School as its Principal for these past eight years. But more importantly I am proud of the students, past and present, and the outstanding faculty that has generated the rich tradition and heritage of this institution. I pray that we may continue to focus on those quali- ties that represent the foundation of Manti High School. The integrity and ethics of our school will carry onward with our graduating seniors to better our communities and our world. I hope in our hearts we will always be proud to say “I am a graduate of Manti High School. — Principal Ivan D. The staff were great! Everyone was new but full of ambition. We would have never made it without Nadean and Wayne our ever-faithful photographers. Last but not least I’d like to thank Mrs. Erickson who always ended up with most of the worry and work. But mostly thanks to the student- body for being you, so we could have fun putting together our yearbook. Desiree’ Lowry It’s force from within, not push from without; It’s a burning desire to make every day count. A yearning, a learning, a transcending doubt. It’s all in the motto, “A Matter of Pride”. “Self-Realization” these words dearly ring; Like “Semper Fidelis,” now there’s the real thing. It’s always and faithful and let your soul sing. It’s all in the motto, “A Matter of Pride.” The Lord in His wisdom made no two alike; But gave each a gold mine, a Mother Lode strike. So work it and pan it and filter with might. It’s all in the motto, “A Matter of Pride.” A Templar stands tall with armour and shield; Armed for true service, real knowledge to wield. Ignorance and hate such energies yield. It’s all in the motto, “A Matter of Pride.” — Coach Braithwaite Terry Bean Lesa Bennett Brenda Bills Jeff Birreil Bob Blauer Charlotte Bohlin Cathy Boynton Gary Bradley Carolyn Braithwaite Rhonda Brandon Mike Breinholt Jodi Christensen Lorrie Cox Blake DeMill Christine Donovan Kimberly Dotson Keith Erickson Davis Hayes Lynn Hansen Monica Hall Gitte Hansson Kathleen Hedelius Shawn Henretty Catherine Jackson Shauna James Doug Johnson Clark Johnson Kevin Keller Lesa Larson Kandy Larson Lillian Larson Tom Lee Desiree Lowry Virginia Maynes Donnie Mackey Leslie McArthur Jodi Mclnelly Lisa McLain Russell Miller Shauna Monson Delphine Manson Terrance Mortensen Kevin Munk Shawn Nay Alan Nell Sylvia Nibley Wayne Nielson Sandra Ockey Lorrie Olsen Mark Olson Wendy Petersen Russell Pollett Lisa Ray Not pictured Alan Anderson Mike Lund Jim Nelson LeAnna Herron Tammy Noble Ruth Sprague Doug Rasmussen Kevin Reeve “You expect us to date these guys?” Jeff Sharp Gene Sheppard Lisa Tervort Selina Tuttle Ron Thurston Bjorn Unell El wood VanGorder Sheldon Vorwahler Eric Waller Sue Wilkinson Kathy Willmore Lisa Zabriskie Senior Personalities o r cn cn O Tl 00 4 00 4 T.M Albrecht Tammy Anderson Jolene Beazer Matthew Andreason Jim Anderson Ginger Ashworth Robyne Berry Diane Bessey oo 4 00 4 Lucy Blauer Mitzl Carpenter Scott Bawden Lonnie Cox Gary Cutler April Daniels Teresa Anderson Dee Ann Bean Nina Blankenship f I Eric Dean 12 00 00 4 00 4 00 4 00 4 Joelle Naylor Jordan Nielson Nadean Nielson Butch Noble Chris Nelson 14 Coreen Rich Steven Ray Mike Sharp Wendy Orton Traci Shand Roy Simmons Robin Smith Wendi Snow Kathy Sorensen Michael Stewart Kim Stilson Ralean Syndergaard Mark Tapp 15 o r cn cn O oo cn 00 cn 00 cn 00 cn oo cn Stephen Braithwaite Cynthia Cox Gerald Breinholt Craig Brunson Tim Clemens Jaylene Cluff Angela Curtis Zan Davis Duane DeMill Julie Dunigan 16 Doug Haymond Penny Jorgenson Vs ' Lorna Jorgenson Lorilee Eberhard Donna Herron Eddie Larsen Eva Fredrickson Dawn Greenwood Laurie Hughes Jerry Jensen Crystal Larsen Matt Jacks Darlene Jenkins KamRay Jensen Mike Forcher Debbie Hayes Kevin Huntsman Shanon Jones Angie Larson 00 Cn 00 cn 00 cn 00 cn 00 cn Kenneth Nielson Rory Nielson Wendy Norton Melanie Ockey Denise Olson Mark Pollett Brian Prows Susan Rees Kathleen Reeve Rick Rasmussen 18 Connie Simon sen Karla Simonsen Corinne Tapp Jolin Wilkinson I 19 r 00 00 ON Karen Corcoran Kurt Dean 0 Kristin Denton George Dotson Candace Duncan Tracy Duncan 20 Aime Eberhard Brent Edmunds Daniel Farnsworth Michael Frischknecht John Gbb Diana Jensen John Keller t “ • 4 ■KMi J Vicki Hughes Christie Jacobson Melissa Kalaher Julie Jackson Daphne Kudela David Kudela Wayne Ludvigson if I Tim Miller Shirlene Meyers Steven Peterson Shand Rasmusson Karena Van Blankenstein Brent Woodside Kelli Shand Tiffany Wardell Barbie Walker Dave Nelson Judd Wathen Foreign Exchange Students “They’re Cool! We Love Them! It’s Good to Have Them Here!” Are a few comments made about the three foreign exchange students from Sweden. Having Bjorn, Lotta, and Gitte attend our school is an excellent cultural experience. We, as students have learned much about the Swedish way of life. We have enjoyed having them here at Manti High School. Bjorn Unell says he has fun going to school at MHS. His favorite classes are drafting and electronics. Lotta Bohlin, originally from Fin- spang, Sweden, is staying with the Willmore family. Her favorite classes are English and shop. Her favorite food is Brick Oven Pizza. Gitte Hansson thinks MHS is a special school. Everyone is friendly and nice to her. She likes all her classes. When you ask her what she likes most about America her an- swer is the FOOD! 24 MHS Students Jeff Bennion Susie Dodds Michelle Peterson Jesse Rich Above are MHS Students who were unavailable for pic- tures the day they were tak- en. Mortensen School Board Sheila Sorensen; Leona Wintch, retired board member; Don Shand; McLIoyd Ericksen; Kent Sanders; Glen Lee; Superintendent Scott W Bean Tom Willardsen, Clerk. Mrs. Leona Wintch has retired from the school board after twelve years. She devoted her time and services to better the quality of education. She is a very kind and appreciative person. MHS would like to thank her for what she has done for our high school. Long meetings with much discussion are part of the ac- tivities of our local school board. They are necessary, as the members make deci- sions that will affect every student in the South Sanpete School District. Courage, wis- dom, dedication and a sense of humor are all needed to serve on a school board. The P.E. classes hit, caught shot, dribbled, jumped and pumped their way to physical fitness under the guidance of coaches Cathi Jarvis, Wilbur Braithwaite, Dew«V Brun- dage and Glen Goodwin. Along with stronger bodies and increased skills, emphasis was placed on sportsmanship. These classes al- ways seem to be fun and to help break up a day of study. 36 Social Studies And Media ■ 38 Within a Manti High social stud- ies room, there are many things happening. While the teacher lec- tures the students talk, daydream and even sleep. Although not many would call these classes wild or far out, the teachers are hard to beat. Vocational Education classes always attract attention because students learn skills to help them in everyday life. Classes such as woodshop, business, auto shop and home economics also help in choosing and getting started on a career. Vocational r Language Arts And Fine Arts Developing talents by learning to write, draw, sing, and read well are only a few things students at Manti High School learn in the Language and Fine Arts departments. All of the teachers take time out of their busy schedules to help add class to our high school. We, as students, would like to thank them. Cox(A B)=Cos A CosB . SinA Sin B, (XY)2 = (Xj-X,)2 + (Y2-Y j )2 These are some of the strange writings seen on the chalkboard in the Math classrooms at MHS. Math seems to be a subject that turns some students “on” and some students “off . Mr. Good, Mr. Ockey and Mr. Bessey are the instructors and are always willing to help. 44 45 ORGANIZATIONS An exciting trip to Reno, Nevada to attend the Nation- al Association of Student Councils convention started off the year for Andy Russell-Student Body Pres., Shauna Monson-V. Pres., Lisa McLain-Sec., and Rhonda Bran- don-Activity Agent. Their four days in Reno were filled with hugs, stimulating speakers, exchanging warm fuz- zies and meeting loads of students from all over the United States. When school began the work also began. Helping with registration during the opening days of school, organiz- ing a busy and fun Homecoming Week, sponsoring a Sub for Santa project were some of the traditional activities conducted by these officers. The theme for the year, “It’s a matter of pride”, was carried out under their leadership. A main project for the year was raising funds for an attractive identification sign to be placed in front of our new school. All in all it was a busy and successful year. Senor Kimball said his objec- tives for the year were to teach grammar and cultural events. Sing- ing in Spanish turned out to be one of the pluses but No siesta’s during class was one of the minuses. The Drama Club has had a busy year filled with many activities. They produced a community play, “Saturday’s Warrior,” which was a big success. They also competed in the Shakespearian Festival for the first time, where they received an award for “Best Ensemble. They went to the Copper Classic and competed in forensic activities. Lisa Zabriskie and Bjorn Unell, representing the Seniors were selected as King and Queen. This was a new activity this year and all stu- dents seemed to enjoy it. % £ (Patrons ♦ Best Wishes to M.H.S. and the Class of ’83.
