Most people don't realize how much hard work, tears, frustration, and determination go into making an excellent yearbook. Special thanks to the teachers who put up with staff members missing classes and all the other interruptions. Thanks to my super Clarion Staff for hanging in there when the going got tough. It's been a learning experience for all of us, and even though this was the first year on the staff for all of them, they did a fantastic job. But most of all, Thank You Mrs. Erickson! Without your organization and your knowledge of photography (and equipment!) we never would have done it. And last, but not least, thanks to you, the students at MHS, for being you, because that's what this book is all about. It's been a great year, one to remember, and hopefully this yearbook has succeeded in capturing some of those memories you will cherish most. Once again, thanks to all the terrific people who made this yearbook a reality instead of a dream. It wasn't easy, but we did it! Yumi Oikawa is 17 and Masako Ishigohoka is 16. Both say they like everything about the USA, especially pizza! Yumi's favorite class is Algebra, and Masako likes type. Yumi is staying with the Mark Buchanan family in Manti. In her spare time she en- joys painting, reading, and listening to music, especially ABBA. Masako plays the piano, saxophone, and bassoon. She is liv- ing with the Hadley family in Ephraim. We hope their stay in our communities has been an enjoyable learning experience. ■ Put four enthusiastic student body officers and sixteen H energetic class officers together with a super student ■ council and what do you get? But, believe it or not, the personnel are people too! Did You Know ... •Mr. Rowley helped advertise the Junior Prom by painting it on the side of the bank. Too bad he got caught!!??!! •Mr. Cox had to wear a diaper to school for Fresh- man initiation. •Mrs. Larsen once put a bucket of water over the door and drenched one of her least favorite teachers. •Mrs. Erickson went to school with Mr. Erickson, but they couldn't stand each other. 51 Faculty Robert Besscy Clifford Birrell Science, Type, Math Drama, English Les Bogh Art Dixie Willden English Wilbur Braithwaite Math, P E. Manti High's English depart- ment, under the direction of Mr. Birrell, Coach Hughes, and Mrs. Willden effectively teach students skills necessary to not only everyday life, but to future education also. A Spanish class is taught by Mr. Kimball, also. 54 The halls are alive with the sound of music ..or more correctly, the band room. Mr. Thompson's music classes range from chorus and band to guitar. Other Fine Arts classes include Mr. Bogh's Art classes which will begin 2nd semester. The Fine Arts program does much to improve students' skills in the lighter side of life. 55 Most people enter Math and Science classes each year fearing the worst, and although it turns out that way for many, some people actually enjoy these kinds of classes. Everything from Survey Math to College Algebra and Freshman Science to Physics is taught at Manti High School. Capable teachers, Mr. Bessey, Mr. Good, Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Ockey, and Mr. Wheeler do their best to make your Math and Science experience as en- joyable as possible. 57 P.E. If you took a P . class at Manti High School this year, chances are you were involved in anything from badminton, exercising and weightlifting, to flag football, baseball, and vol- leyball. In fact, the P.E. classes even raked, pulled weeds and moved rocks to help prepare the playing fields for comple- tion. Special thanks to all our coaches who use their exper- tise to help keep Manti High students physically fit. ■ 58 Vocational Some of the more popular vocational classes that are offered at Manti High School are: Home Economics, Auto Shop, Cabinet Making and Ac- counting. These classes give students the skills necessary for use in many careers, and also pro- vide the knowledge they must have to begin their careers and be successful. 60 Social Studies Media Maps, straight faces, sleeping students, pop quizzes, dry jokes, and war stories are just a few of the things common to a social studies class at Manti High. Under the capable direc- tion of Coach Brundage, Mr. Erickson, and Mr. Mickelson, the social studies department teaches us valuable concepts to be used throughout our life- times. So, whether struggling through Geography as a Fresh- man, or American Problems as a Senior, one must admit they do a super job. Thanks! 62 The Media Center is getting to look better and better every year. Mrs. Erickson and her aides have used their experience to greatly improve the look of the center and what it has to offer the stu- dents. They make the decisions and set the policies that help govern our school. Dr. Scott W. Bean serves as the new superin- tendent replacing Dr. R.E. Everett. Dr. Bean comes to us well qualified for the position and we welcome him with his friendly smile. He and the other board members work hard to keep our schools going. The district staff also contributes to the smooth running of our schools. The time and talent they put into their jobs is often overlooked, but we appreciate all they do for us. School Services ACTIVITIES Homecoming 1981 Homecoming week was an exciting time for everyone. The action packed week started out with the queen con- test on Monday and ended with the victory dance Friday night. Lucy Blauer was chosen to reign over the weeks activities as Homecoming Queen with Wendy James and Angie Steck as atten- dants. The traditional cheerleader auc- tion was spiced up with the addition of a football player leg sale. Students were encouraged to dress-up each day, everything from cowboys, to Romans, to Punk rockers.
