Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1980 volume:

2 Beginnings Today You came running With a small specked egg Warm in your hand. You could barely comprehend, I know, As I told you Of Beginnings — Of egg and bird. Told, too, That years ago You also began. Smaller than sight. And then. As egg yearns for sky And seed Stretches to tree, You became— Like me. Oh, But there’s So much more. You and I, Child, Have just begun. Think: Worlds from now What might we be?— We, Who are seed Of Deity. OUR LIFE IS MADE OF BEGINNINGS THAT NEVER END ADMINISTRATION AND CURRICULUM The district and school administrations and personnel have made the school year a successful one. Often times their work has gone unnoticed but a school day would not be complete without their involvement in a direct or indirect manner. The Board of Education along with Superintendent Everett have set school policies by which all students at Manti High are governed. School And Personnel Principal Rowley and Mrs. Larson in the office have administered the policies and run the school efficiently. Mr. Rowley handled discipline problems, advised students, designed curriculum, and made decisions affecting the faculty. John Ludvigson and Bryce Larson kept the school clean and comfortable. Mrs. Erickson was a welcome smile in the library. Even when busy she always had time to help you find a good book. With Mrs. Erickson’s help we have been able to get a larger variety of good books. Administration Mr. Ivan D. Rowley Mrs. Helene Larson Mrs. Winona Erickson Principal Secretary Media Specialist a. LANGUAGE ARTS This year showed much growth and improvement in Manti High School’s Language Arts and Fine Arts Departments. Several changes were made but the outcome marked an improvement overall. A Spanish Program was begun and had its great beginning with Mr. Richard Kimball (not pictured) teaching three Spanish classes. The Music Department at the High School expanded to this year include Mr. Don Findlay as conductor of the String Ensemble. Mr. William Thompson continued gaining a reputation throughout the county for having a department of students with superb talent. Mr. Clifford Hughes, new at MHS, taught all the freshmen in his english classes. Mrs. Dixie Bond prepared several senior students for college experience in her College Prep English Class. While some teachers were new at MHS, one particular english teacher spent her last year here. Trade Borgogna’s field of specialty included Drama and Forensics as well as English. The Art Department was under the direction of Mr. Les Bogh. Mr. Leslie Good Trig. Chem. Physics Algebra Mr. Earl Wheeler Biology Phys. Ag. Science 10 MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE “I’m not gonna touch that thing!” Ah, the sweet smells of science: formaldehyde, frongs, bunsen burners, worms, sulphur, sharks. . We all have to take Science sometime to graduate, and it’s doubtful we’ll ever forget it; but, on the other hand, will a freshman ever forget his first experience with Geometry? The Math Department offered everything from Basic Math to Trigonometry. Teachers still fought off the ever present problem of the lost student in the corner saying “Huh?” Mr. Robert Bessey, Algebra Mr. Wilbur Braithwaite. Algebra 9th Math Mr. Glen Goodwin, Business Math Senior Math Mr. John Ockey, Geometry Algebra General Math Mr. Wilbur Braithwaite Mr. Glen Goodwin Miss Pegg Tucker Mr. Kent Van Tassell Each student at Manti High is required to fulfill one and one-half credits of P.E. The teen years are years in which the body is developing and growing and participating in Physical Education provided a method of becoming coordinated as well as offering an opportunity for students to learn new lifetime sports, and also provided a welcome break from solid subjects which each students must take each year. Mr. Clair Erickson Mr. Vaun Mickelsen Drawing maps, memorizing exports, imports, populations, or capital cities was a popular topic among freshmen since all had to take World Geography. Among Juniors the topic always seemed to be history journals, finalizing the last 200 pages of that extra thick history book, and finding enough newspaper articles when twenty other history students got to the morning paper before you did. With Seniors a more sophisticated course like Psychology, Economics, or American Problems seemed to fill the more mature mind. • o-i c zn Mr. Gaylen Christiansen, Auto Mr. Morlin Cox, Shop Mr. Rodney Cox, Workstudy Mrs. Shirley Sainz, Business VOCATIONAL EDUCATION Many students participated this year in the vocational education programs offered at Manti High School. Auto and shop students became involved working with trades which helped them do and make many useful things. The workstudy program offered students involved an opportunity to experience first hand job activities. Students involved in the vocational programs should be ready to go right into the working field without further education. Mr. Earl Wheeler Mrs. Erma Young Vocational Agriculture Home Economics 15 IN FUTURE YEARS THIS BOOK SHALL BE OPENED TIME AND TIME AGAIN, MANY FRIENDS WILL HAVE BECOME ACQUAINTANCES REMEMBERED ONLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME. The girls took a disappointing 2nd place to Grantsville at the State meet at BYU for the second year in a row. Throughout the season, the squad prepared physically as well as mentally for facing tough and experienced opponents. Training, games, and pep talks all centered on pride—of a job well done. Defeat or victory? It mattered not if pride had been achieved. The football season ended with Manti High School winning only one game but the experiences have taught valuable lessons to those participating. CAPTAINS: Marc Haslam, Todd Macfarlane. Steve Fritz. Both teams have been introduced. The referee walks out onto the floor as the teams place themselves for the beginning jump ball! You could see these actions and sense the excitement every time you watched a Varsity Basketball game. Coach Braithwaite said this year’s Varsity Basketball Team was one of the most talented teams we've had in MHS history. This was proved again as we showed North Sanpete that Pep, Rastus, and Victory would still stay and be ours. Through wins and losses, sickness and injury, our team always pulled together and never let the name “Manti Templars” fall from the high place it has always held. Never tiring, and always faithful, fans came to home games or traveled to away games and watched, supported, and cheered for old Manti High. 66 Varsity Basketball LEAGUE Manti 49 South Sevier 47 Manti 65 North Sanpete 56 Manti 48 Richfield 55 Manti 68 Millard 73 Manti 56 Juab 50 Manti 65 Delta 54 Manti 52 South Sevier 60 Manti 59 North Sanpete 53 Manti 61 Richfield 80 Manti 52 Millard 58 Manti 63 Juab 64 Manti 74 Delta 47 Outstanding Wrestlers were chosen each week. The Templarettes marched right into the new year with Toads of enthusiasm which earned them a Superior Trophy at Camp. Learning parade routines and marches for the upcoming year was fun and hard. Many hours of dedication helped add up to doing a good job on performances. From being sailors to cowboys and Indians, to getting ready for the 80’s, and even a formal dance were some of the highlights of this year. All of these contributed to getting ready for Region Competition. It was a learning experience for all and all were pleased at the great job they did. She is a conscientious student and was chosen to be in NHS this year. He’s quiet, but he’s always there. Sam was chosen as Sterling Scholar in the vocational area because he is very creative with his hands. He can look at a problem — then come up with some way to solve it or at least make it better. Good Job, Sam and Christina. Top Templars Top Templars for Second Quarter were Lynette Mickelsen and Mark Russell. Lynette displays a quality of citizenship that is noticed by all. She has been in Drill Team for two years. The one accomplishment that will be most remembered of Lynette, is having a straight 4.0. They include tennis, running track, basketball, forensic-drama, and many others. She has super high spirits which always show! Todd played football, and wrestled heavyweight this year. He is often being teased about his big appetite, but he takes it all in fun with a never failing spirit. Congratulations, Todd and Dianne. Below are Top Templars for Third Quarter. If you need someone dependable call on Louise. Louise has participated in FHA through high school and served as Secretary this year. This gal is a real go-getter. Holding down 3 part-time jobs and she never quits. He’s either got a camera in his hand or is debating against someone. Rigel can do just about anything. Thanks to the yearbook staff who have worked long and hard hours to put together a book which would not only summarize the year but would also establish a beginning for a new year at our new school. I hope the book has brought together moments which you consider special. Rigel Hinckley has been a life saver where yearbook is concerned. Thanks for spending all that time taking pictures, developing pictures, and putting up with our demands. Thanks also to Mrs. Sainz for working closely with the staff to produce the 1980 Clarion.
