Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1979 volume:

MOMENTS REMAIN Certain moments linger strangely In the memory. Unimportant in themselves Such memories may be, Yet they live when other things Have faded from the mind. Time in passing seems to leave The little things behind. 3 A lonely country road My home, a place to call hometown A host of golden daffodils ... fm The sweet song of a tiny bird... Majestic mountains towering high. We forget the crucial times, The really big events, And recall the details of The trifling incidents. Life's dramatic hours Of greatest joy and sharpest pain Fade away into the past... But moments still remain. -Patience Strong CLARION __ LAST VARSITY Team David Beazer Kenny Harman Captains Brad Cox Aaron Jackson OFFENSE-Front Row: Greg Anderson, Todd Macfarlane, Brad Cox, Marc Haslam, Olsen, Terry Squire, Kent Abegglen, Mike Levy. Volleyball BUMP, SET, SPIKE.. .that's the way Manti Girls Volleyball Team plays. Dedication, teamwork, and determination to reach higher goals helped win them a First Place at the Manti Invitational and gave them a sensational league record of ten wins to one loss. Through their efforts they were Division Champions and captured a Fifth Place at Region. The most important things the girls gained from participating on the Volleyball Team were new and stronger friendships. The girls credit Miss Peggy Tucker for their success. She has worked hard, been understanding, and very patient. The girls learned to be Ladies First, and Athletes Second.'' Carry on the good work, Ladies! Reigning over homecoming activities was SUE SNOW, representing the Senior Class of 1979. For the past two years, Sue has been active as a varsity cheerleader. She has also been involved in the music program and while keeping busy has maintained a high grade-point- average . The theme for the 1978 Homecoming Week was ' 'TIME''. Homecoming Week was planned for the month of September. As part of the traditional week, the Student Council planned the annual Letterlighting, Powder-Puff Football, and highlighted the week by sponsoring a dance after the football game. The cheerleaders helped increase school spirit during the week by conducting a Spirit Stick Competition. The Alumni Association sponsored the assembly. Returning to entertain the studentbody, were some of the more recent Manti High School graduates. 12 Queen LEW ANN SHAND was the 1st Attendant in the Homecoming Royalty. She represents the Senior Class. Being Drill Mistress of the Templarettes keeps Lew Ann busy. But best of all Lew Ann enjoys being a student at Manti High School. ANGELA KELLER, the 2nd Attendant in the Homecoming Royalty, represents the Sophomore Class. Angela has been active for many years in student government. She is active in the drill team and enjoys playing the saxophone and the piano. She's not only talented but is also very popular with all the students at M. H. Sunburns, long trips to other schools for matches held there, and long hours of practice after school all paid off in the end. This year marks the third consecutive Region Championship the girls tennis team walked off with. They also proudly represented Manti High School at the State Tournament in Provo by taking 2nd Place. The Girls Tennis Program at M.H.S. is four years young in existence yet four years old in growing experience. November 4, 1978, a date to remember. Each girl at M.H.S. was able to prefer that special fuy for the Annual Autumn Ball sponsored by the .H.A. Robin Jorgensen was chairman of the semi-formal dance that was held at the Manti Armory. The gymnasium was transformed into a ballroom by simple but elegant decorations. James Ockey, 2ND QUARTER TOP TEMPLAR, was selected because of his total devotion to the mathematics department. He is a lab assistant to Mr. Good, has been the only male member of the National Honor Society during last year, and also finds time to play tennis. Gregory Anderson, 3RD QUARTER TOP TEMPLAR, has been active in athletics. He is a conscientious student and has served his senior class as representative. 3RD QUARTER TOP TEMPLAR, Kathy Allred, is dependable, responsible, mature, and pretty. She is dedicated to Templarettes where she has held the office of historian for two years. Kathy is a good student and if you want a job well done-ask Kathy! Pretty Sue Snow, FOURTH QUARTER TOP TEMPLAR is a strength in the music department. Sue has also been active as a varsity cheerleader this year and has been member of the National Honor Society. Brad Cox, FOURTH QUARTER TOP TEMPLAR, is an example to all students at Manti High. He has proven his strong will to achieve by wrestling his way to a State Wrestling Championship, and has served well as Studentbody President. Salutatorians Carma Marie Wintch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan K. Wintch, is the Co-Salutatorian at the 1979 Commencement Exercises. Carma is not only an excellent student scholastically but she is also a strong athlete. Besides being head cheerleader, Carma finds time to become involved in Drama and N.H.S. She finds time to share a special moment with every student or teacher she sees each day. Carma is eager, ambitious, and always willing to go the extra mile. Valedictorian James Soren Ockey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Ockey of Ephraim, has by far captured the highest scholastic honor. James more commonly known as Jimmy, has achieved excellence not only in Mathematics, the area in which he spends most of his time, but also in other academic subjects. Jimmy has been a part-time student at Snow College during the past year and has continued to expand his horizons. Even though college classes require a great amount of study time, Jimmy has found time to become involved in extra-curricular activities such as Model U.N. and tennis. Jimmy is also a member of the National Honor Society. Among Jimmy's many honors upon graduation from M.H.S. is one of great significance. Jimmy was selected as a recipient of the Spencer W. Kimball Scholarship at Brigham Young University. Lisa Barton, Co-Saluta torian, is the daughter of President and Mrs. Lee R. Barton of Manti. Lisa's life is total involvement and total dedication to all she participates in. Drill Team, N.H.S., Prom Chairman, Tennis, Sophomore Class Secretary, News Editor of the Templar Trumpet, and Studentbody Secretary are fine examples of her willingness to serve. As a leader, Lisa has excelled. Congratulations! 99 r Special Awards are given as means of recognizing those outstanding students which have really achieved self- realization. Where is the school that does not keep Within its inmost doors, Some fond remembrance hidden deep Of days that are no more ? Who hath not saved some trifling thing, More prized than jewels rare- A faded yearbook, a school ring Or a memory you shall always wear? We have passed and left marks of our being here. Yet, I know we will return to walk remembered paths to restore the memories of the years. Like this river bed carved in the earth, the memories of the 70's shall forever be embedded in our minds. 106 Kathy M. Rowley The LAST You Can't Plan for the Future in the Future ...
