Royalty: Sandra Stevenson, 1st Attendant; Carma Wintch, Queen; Jana Sue Bean, 2nd Attendant Girls Tennis Girls Tennis was another fall sport sponsored at Manti High School. As with many of our sports, it took a great deal of coordination in order to play a good game. The enjoyment and healthy exercise involved made these games worthwhile to those participating. Tennis team members kept up the old Templar tradition and showed their abilities, while in competition with other schools in the Region. Playing against tough and determined opponents, Templars worked to increase their talents the best they could. The 1978 Girls Tennis Team members were: Eileen Nielson, Diana Beal, Nina Hinckley, Lisa Barton, Leslie Graham, Robin Jorgensen, Diane Haymond, Lisa Blankenship, Fem Mortensen, Joy Johnson, Suzanne McBride, and Julie Christensen. Seven girls represented the school in the Region Seven Tournament. Suzanne McBride 3rd Place, No. 1 in Singles. Diane Haymond 2nd Place, No. 2 in Singles. Fern Mortensen 1st Place, No. 3 in Singles. Julie Christensen and Nina Hinckley 1st Place, No. 1 in Doubles. Joy Johnson and Lisa Barton 1st Place, No. 2 in Doubles. The team won the Region Seven Trophy. These girls competed in the State Meet at B. Y. U. , and took the State Championship with a very impressive showing. The Girls Tennis Team was coached by Coach Wilbur Braithwaite. Coach Braithwaite can be very proud of these girls. Congratulations! 11 Girls Volleyball The Manti High School Girls Volleyball Team played sensationally this year. Together with a great deal of practice, teamwork, and dedication, the team and coach captured Fifth Place in Region, where they defeated Richfield High School 20 to 13. But that was not all for from there the volleyball team went to State with the Templar fans cheering for them all the way. Congratulations! The busiest booth was the sponge throwing at some of our teachers. Coach Van Tassell's wet face was proof of the dollars we earned. Our photographer was able to capture some of the activities. But the effort of all reached a maximum during the Region 7 Round Robin Tournament. Each man's dream was to capture honors for Manti High School. After a shaky start, the Mighty Templars gained a berth in the Utah 2-A State Tournament by taking 4th Place in Region 7. But that was not all—State Tournament brought new surprises for all. In Manti's final game of the year, the Templars met Richfield head-on to revive an old rivalry that capitalized last year at the final game of the 1977 State Tournament. The Templars closed their season by taking 5th Place in State after a heartbreaking loss to Richfield by the narrow margin of 61-60. J.V. Basketball Experience. That is the name of the Junior Varsity game. Throughout this past season the J.V. boys have worked hard, played tough, fought proudly, and all for one thing— each one of the boys hopes to become a varsity player next year. Win or lose? That really matters little for in the end the J.V. team has rep- resented Manti High School well. Front Row: Cary Rosquist; Stephen Jackson; Kent Abeggien; Russell Snow. Everyone gets involved in wrestling. Either you are a wrestler pinning your opponent on the mat, or a fan sitting in the stands and cheering for the Templars. No matter who you are, when you leave the gymnasium from a wrestling match you have pride in your team for you know they are the best ever and will always be number one. But overall they had a growing season. They were young but grew with experience. The early morning practices showed the dedication of each individual girl. Through courage and hardships they learned to cope with their losses and to find the strength to strive for the better. They thank those that found the time to support their games and look forward to seeing you next year. V., next year's Varsity. The J.V. Wrestling Squad got off to a very good start by filling most of the weight categories— some even having two or three extra men. They all got down to the nitty gritty by starting to get in tip top shape so that wrestling for a total of 6 minutes would not fatigue them. Coach Van Tassell worked long and hard teaching all the moves to the young hopefuls. It was easy enough to do the different moves that Coach did but it was a completely different story when it came down to getting the moves with speed. The J V. Wrestlers went out on the mat with the one goal of winning and even when they lost didn't give up. Instead they diligently practiced each move over and over again with the hopes of pinning a victory for Manti High School. Sweetheart The Future Farmers of America have had a good year—full of their many projects and activities. The F.F.A. Sweetheart Assembly was a very successful event culminating with the usual procedure of crowning the 1978 Sweetheart. Contestants were: Jolene Dahl, LewAnn Shand, Paige Rawlings, Carma Wintch, LeighAnn Mortensen, Teresa McBride, Sue Snow, and Jill Rasmusson. The girls competed in many activities such as milking a cow, driving a tractor, saddling a horse, and shooting at a target! Jill Rasmussen represented the South Sanpete Chapter in the UtahF. F. A. Sweetheart Contest Clarion Staff congratulates Mr. Wheeler, and the F. F. A. club members for an excellent year of activities! Assemblies To break the monotony of so-called student life at M. H. S. , the Student Council provided a variety of assemblies. Faculty members often times complained of too many interruptions in a given week while students were more than welcome to get away from period. But Principal Rowley aided in the scheduling of quickie pep assemblies when they were most needed by our teams and also helped out when a guest assembly showed up too late or far earlier than scheduled. All in all, students at M. H. S. proved once again to be an attentive and cooperative audience to a variety of performers. 1978 Drill Team Formal Evergreen . Spirits rise and their dance. • • The Annual Drill Team Formal came and went but certainly left its share of memories for this year's Templarettes. The drill team members chose EVER- GREEN as their theme and used green and yellow decorations to create a warm setting for the dance held February 4, 1978. As part of the floorshow, Lydia Nibley, one of the Templarettes, (pictured above) sang the theme song. Preferred Men for the occasion were also announced and Miss Peggy Tucker, advisor, then introduced each of the drill team girls and their escorts for the evening. Track And Field Success might be the difference of a split second or a quarter of an inch to track team members. Hours, days, and weeks of training were sometimes necessary to shave off that extra fraction of a second from a trackster's running time. Fighting through the overwhelming fatigue and forcing his exhausted muscles to respond like a machine for those last few yards sometimes meant the difference between a thrilling victory or a miserable defeat. The extra hours of sweat, exercises, and training were often rewarded with a full weary minute of knowing he had been a winner. But A Moment Baseball Front Row; David Bradley; Gary S. Commencement Exercises We May Never Pass This Way Again Student Council ’77-’78 Student Council, the governing body of Manti High School, has for this past school year successfully achieved their goal of offering the studentbody a variety of activities. Along with scheduling dances, assemblies, and planning special weeks for the high school, the council became involved in regional activities. As a special service project, members of the council spent several hours chipping off old paint in the auditorium so that it could be repainted. All in all, Manti High School Student Council kept everything under control under the direction of Clair Erickson. Always beaming with pride and enthusiasm, they helped build our spirit. They devoted long hours to supporting our teams even at games held at the very corners of the state. Assuring all the teams that they were tops in their sports, creating motivating pep assemblies, and gaining a spirit stick at cheer- leader camp became important facets of the cheer- leaders' lives. J.V. Cheerleaders The J. V. Cheerleaders motivated the athletes through victory and defeat in football, wrestling, and basketball by leading the school in cheer with endless enthusiasm. With the help of students in pep assemblies and skits, they kept school spirit bubbling at Manti High School throughout the year. The Clarion Staff hopes that even though the 1978 Clarion contains errors of diverse kinds, that the year behind us now, has been well recorded. Many long hours have been devoted by yearbook staff members but a special thanks should also go to Dennis Tolman, Lisa Larsen, and David Peterson for helping out. Thanks to Brother Keller, too, for the use of his darkroom facilities. But most important of all, thank you for the opportunity you have given us to capture a great school year. AND WHAT A YEAR!
