STUDENT COUNCIL The student council introduced several new activi- ties: the Region Ski Meet and the Region Semi-Formal Dance. They also held a Basketball Jones faculty game and a ' Sock-Hop to raise money for a school marquee. All student council members were active in one or more committees organized to better the school year. One committee studied the school constitution, another cleaned the football field, while another restored a velvet portrait of the school's mascot. An art committee was assigned to design and create attractive bulletin boards for the school’s halls. Glen Goodwin. Asst Coach. Russell Felt. Coach; John Ockey. Asst Coach Experts in the development of football programs are in agreement that it takes at least five years to achieve a winning season. Exactly on schedule Manti, in its fifth sea son, won six of nine contests and repre- sented MHS in the State Playoffs. After losing the opening game, the Templars won six straight including a 28-0 victory over arch-rival North Sanpete We lost the league championship to Richfield and we also lost to State Champion Dixie High School in the State Quarterfinals at St. George. The season was marked with four games in which the margin of victory came with less than seven minutes remaining Most notable of the close games was the 21-20 victory over Juab at Nephl. One of the important contributing factors to our successful season was the large number of boys who elected to play foot- ball. including several upper classmen who had not played the previous year Mark Stoddard and Kevin McBride were elected Co-Captains Mark was selected to the two major newspaper All-State-Teams. Kevin. Clark and Reid were All-Region VII. Team members also selected outstanding players for each game, those selected re- ceived award decals during the year. The outcome of the season left returning players with an understanding of the areas that need improvement to continue and develop a winning tradition and also with a feeling of optimism for the future of Temp- lar football. 11
