They also held a Basketball Jones faculty game and a ' Sock-Hop to raise money for a school marquee. All student council members were active in one or more committees organized to better the school year. One committee studied the school constitution, another cleaned the football field, while another restored a velvet portrait of the school's mascot. An art committee was assigned to design and create attractive bulletin boards for the school’s halls. All in all. this year s student council worked very ef- fectively in promoting school spirit, worth while activities among fellow students. First row: Brad Beacham. Mike Graham. Clifford Sorensen. Exactly on schedule Manti, in its fifth sea son, won six of nine contests and repre- sented MHS in the State Playoffs. After losing the opening game, the Templars won six straight including a 28-0 victory over arch-rival North Sanpete We lost the league championship to Richfield and we also lost to State Champion Dixie High School in the State Quarterfinals at St. George. The season was marked with four games in which the margin of victory came with less than seven minutes remaining Most notable of the close games was the 21-20 victory over Juab at Nephl. One of the important contributing factors to our successful season was the large number of boys who elected to play foot- ball. including several upper classmen who had not played the previous year Mark Stoddard and Kevin McBride were elected Co-Captains Mark was selected to the two major newspaper All-State-Teams. Kevin. Clark and Reid were All-Region VII. Team members also selected outstanding players for each game, those selected re- ceived award decals during the year. The outcome of the season left returning players with an understanding of the areas that need improvement to continue and develop a winning tradition and also with a feeling of optimism for the future of Temp- lar football. 11 12 Max Anderson. FOOTBALL '74 Another first for Manti Football this season was the creation of a junior varsity football program which was separate from the varsity. The new program is an indication of the increase in participation in football and also re- flects the addition of the ninth grade to MHS. The purpose of junior varsity football is to prepare participants for the varsity. They learn qualities of self-discipline with the necessary techniques of foot- ball. This year’s team without any ex- perienced players faced teams that were comprised of many players with varsity experience. The team represented MHS very well. Many of this team will contribute to next year’s varsity. The program is an extremely import- ant one to the future of football at Manti and we hope succeeding junior varsity teams will be as successful. First row: Fred Johnson. Brad Orr. Chad Allred. Seniors, second place, and Sophomores, third place Tuesday, the Homecoming Queen contest was held Participants were chosen from each class, and were judged on poise, talent, and popular vote After a difficult decision, three girls were selected: First Attendant. Jerrie Nielson. Queen Jane Davidson. Second Attendant. Carolyn Wanlass To- gether they reigned throughout Homecoming Week Lipstick and long hair came to MHS locker rooms as girls donned football gear to fight it out on the gridiron Senior and Junior girls were the partici- pants. coached by outstanding football team members The Seniors won after a rough play-by-the-rules game Everybody loves a parade.' so they say. and MHS couldn't have enjoyed their Homecoming parade more Members of many clubs and classes looked proudly on as their handiwork glided past them. The Freshmen won the float contest with Were the Fresh Guys Friday afternoon, the Manti Templars roared past the North Sanpete Hawks with a victory score of 28-0 To top off a perfect week, students danced to the sounds of Tyme For many of the Freshmen and Sophomores, it was their first big dance All in all. Homecoming was a very eventful week filled with excitement, laughter, and enthusiasm HOMECOMING '73 SADIE HAWKINS DAY . SENIORS We the Senior Class of 74 have walked through the halls of Manti High School for the last time We have witness many changes and have helped form new traditions From the first moment we arrived at MHS as Sophomores, we have bee growing and maturing in both knowledge and experience. We began our Sophomore year unaware of what we were to face, yet anxious to participate in high school life We learned many things during this year and had fun doing it. All of our faces glowed with pride at the excitement of lighting our first letter We progressed forward earning the right to become Juniors We entered into our Junior year determined to participate in activities with more energy than ever By working together, .ve succeeded in doing our best in everything in which we were involved During Homecoming our efforts were rewarded when we produced the winning letter and float The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom. The Juniors and their dates sparkled with the romance of the evening and danced under the setting of yellow and orange. The anticipation, excitement, and preparation climaxed as we crossed the bridge onto the dance floor and promenaded to our theme song Pieces of April' The magic of that night has remained in our treasured memories of Manti High School. Our Senior year was our last big step up before our first big step forward. The knowledge that this was to be our last year made us participate in athletics, music, drama, speech, and organizations with more purpose than ever before Our Senior strategy caught the Juniors unaware as our Powder Puff football team came out victorious. We also showed our talents by pro- ducing an outstanding assembly Leading the school activities and setting an example for our underclassmen has made us more aware of the meaning of our school motto Self-Realization . Now at the end of our school days we stand with mixed emotions, knowing that we shall walk the halls of Manti High again only as alumni. Yet we are anxious to walk forward down the pathways of life OFFICERS: Kevin McBride Representative Sandra Simmons. Secretary. Randy Steck. Vice President. We conquered the competition by winning the Letter Lighting and the Spirit Chain contest during Homecoming week One of our Homecoming queen contestants was chosen as an attendant in the Homecoming Royalty. We also sponsored the Homecoming dance, which was a great success. As a class, we have added talent and spirit to MHS. as we participated in athletics, clubs, activities, and com- pleted a class assembly, which was well received by the studentbody. We had one of the most beautiful Junior Proms that was ever imagined. It will be long remembered in the hearts of those who attended. We have now completed this year and are ready to go on to the future in a bigger, better calling, that of Seniors OFFICERS Representative. Cynthia Snow. Secretary. Renee Beazer; President. We have really learned a great deal this year and had fun doing it We sponsored a dance, pro- duced an assembly, and smiled through a year of good-natured kidding from the superior upper-class- men. By winning the trash can contest' we showed our in- terest in all of the school activities. We have crowded the halls, made chaos out of the lunchroom, and caused many of the general pains that the Juniors and Seniors endure. The two girls representing the Soph- omores in the Queen Con- test presented some very good talent. The class proved they could compete with the upperclassmen by lighting a superior S for the annual Letterlighting. The Sophomore athletes participated in the excite- ment of this year's sports. The class members have suffered through the trials and tribulations of being the silly, silly sophomores” and we are now ready to become something more. 3 5 Cmdi Allen Steven Albrecht Brett Allred DeAnn Adams Kent Barton Nancy Barnard Leon Beal Tina Chapman Greg DeMill Robert Braithwaite Kan Dobson Shelly Carlson Tim Denton Kelly Duncan Neil Duncan Lorna Edwards Joy Farnsworth Scott Findlay Mike French Mary Frischknecht 37 Elaine Bailey Michael Anderson Val Jo Anderson Colleen Cox Vickey Gross Chris Bradley Tanya Hansen Randy Clark Blake Daniels Janica Jensen Kevin Phenes Kim Keller 38 Molly Green Fred Johnson Sabrina Harman Clair Goodwin Michelle Lowry Ray Lyons Judy Miller Larry Lund Carl Wanlass Anita Young Chad Parry Marale Simonsen Paul Braithwaite Coleen Nielson Dale Munk Karen Tatton 59 Molly NichOlls Karl Graham Kathryn Voorhees Kelly Sondrup Ronny James Ruth Rosquist David Larsen Donave Peatross Marilyn Maynes John Erickson Louise Nielson Brian Nielson Rae Ann Rasmusson Jon Howell Michelle Tapp Curtis Ludvigson 40 Oebra Scow Kendeil McIntosh Roger Peterson Elizabeth Tallada Susan Peterson Kelly Jacobsen Julie Stoddard Don Olson LuAnn Squire Debra Snow Joyce Sorensen Bill Mills Clive Zabriskie Lora Eklund Brad Orr Tammie Wmtch PICTURES NOT AVAILABLE Joe Bown Steve Conner Shrol Ericksen Kevin Gray Cindy Munk Lynn Olsen Kenneth Olsen 41 Class of 77 As the first Freshmen class to enter MHS since 1956, we are proud to say that we have added a little more spirit, a little more trouble, a little more fun, and a little more creative thinking to the hum of Manti High School. This we displayed when we won the Home- coming float contest, mostly on originality. We have par- ticipated in assemblies, dances, activities and we were represented well in the Homecoming queen contest. We have crowded the halls and added to the noise and confusion. We have suffer- ed the agony of being last on the totem pole; but with no more 'han a few bent egos and torn spirits, we have grown tremendously and are now ready to be- come upperclassmen. As a class, we have set many goals. Some of them have been reached and some of them will be reach- ed in the coming years. We have big shoes to fill, but with hard work, we can do it! Kuwait, located at the north end of the Persian Gulf, and just a little larger than the state of Hawaii, was the country represented by MHS this year in Model United Nations. The club searched newspapers, magazines and books to get ideas for its resolutions. They achieved their goal when they attended the Utah Chapter of Model United Na- tions General Assembly in the spring. At this convention, besides having a blast, they proposed and defended their resolutions. (Most of them were new members so they learned a lot too!) Wrestling is considered to be the toughest of all sports competitions because it requires ability, speed, strength and endurance under combative conditions. The wrestler is there alone with no other teammate to help cover mistakes. Team members deserve commendation on their over- all attitude this year; their hustle, determination, improve- ment. and patience in the gaining of experience on the mat. The cheerleaders added much to the matches with their enthusiasm and spirit. STATE TOURNAMENT WRESTLERS - Front: Kerry Byrum Chad All- red Back: Fred Johnson First row: Coach Russel Felt. Mr. Starr, and members of the faculty, also hoped a marquee could be bought, in order to inform the public of the high school activities. After the sign was custom designed and definite plans made, came the difficult job of raising the necessary funds. The student council sponsored many activities such £s the Basketball Jones game, the Sock Hop, and a fifty dollar bill raffle; in addition, popcorn and candy were sold at the basket- ball games, and various clubs donated money. Through the devotion and efforts of the studentbody officers. Mr. Starr, and the students, this project ended in reality—a marquee for Manti High School. Golf was taught in the spring of 74 as the newest of the sports in our school athletic program. Palisade Golf Course provided the facility permitting the in- troduction of golf. In order to build golf, only Freshmen. Sopho- mores. and one Junior were invited to participate In the early weeks of the program, considerable progress was shown. Hopes were high that in future years golf would enjoy the success of other sports. Our program provided an excellent team sport for the school and a life time sport for each participant. 94 VALEDICTORIANS 74 KRISTINE SIMONS Dependable and talented, aptly describes one of this year's valedictorians, Kris Simons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Que Simons.
