Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1969 volume:

Here they come, some a walking, some a riding. Energy released after years of being kept in hiding. ENTER THE YOUNG Lithographed by COMMUNITY PRESS Provo, Utah They’re climbing up the ladder of life- Here they come, some with tasks and ail with an education to complete. ENTER THE YOUNG THEY’RE LEARNING TO THINK MORE THAN 5 YOU THINK THEY THINK BOARD OF EDUCATION AND SUPERINTENDENT Jack Burr Superintendent 6 PRINCIPAL G LEAVE’S MESSAGE Winston Gleave Principal I would like to reflect some of my thoughts as to what the Educational philos- ophies in the future are going to advocate. It is very likely that if the knowledge explosion continues, a student must assume more of the responsibility for his own education than he has done in the past. Many studies show that 50 percent of the students fail the college of their choice during the freshman year. The largest single reason is the inability of the student to properly handle free time. Modern philosophies will assume and demand that students are capable of meeting the challenge of using free time, to do research, to inquire and develop skills, talents and aptitudes for self improvements. This modern philosophy must assume that most students (as high as 95 percent) will attend schools without overt institutional coercion. As the students attend a school that clothes them with dignity of making choices concerning their educational future and expects them to live with these choices, they will waken to the meaning of education and help prepare themselves for their future rather than leaving it up to someone else. 7 FACULTY Thelma Smith Wilbur Braithwaite Eunice Alder Albert C. Todd Nielson Rebecca Mortenson Todd Nielson filled well his position of studentbody president. He took on the responsibility of leadership and helped to make one of the great- est years possible. Rebecca Mortenson smiled her cute smile all year, through even the toughest jobs. She seemed to add pep to the school and everyone's day. She was truly a great choice for vice president. Brant Tuttle was an activity man- ager that really planned some exciting activities. Jeannine Howell served as our bubbly secretary. She was always there with free-flying spirit and fresh ideas. They have had a campaign against litter bugs and people who jay walk. Both of which were great helps in making the year a memorable one. The publicity committee helped keep the school and the public informed on the activities of the year. This has been a new branch of the Student Council just formed this year. It has done a great job. The student council sponsored the first dance of the year which was a roaring success. All things considered the student council did a great job for the 1968-69 school year. 13 The distinguished Senior Class of 69 of Manti High School looks back over three well-spent years of school. As they reminisce over the old times past, they look forward, too, to a future life unknown and unexplored by themselves. They wish todedicate a portion of their understanding and school spirit to the lower classmen for the betterment of our school, now and future. John Keeler. Kay Nelson. Sandra Bartholomew. Sandra Cherry SENIOR 14 OFFICERS JUNIOR OFFICERS Roger Lund. Nanci Shiozaki. Kathryn Beacham, Craig Nielson. This has been an outstanding year for the Junior class. It has been spiced with their dances, assembly and other extra-curricular activities. Held in the storehouse of knowledge of the Junior class, the Junior Prom stands out as one of the most exciting events of the school year. Shades of purple, and the theme, Somewhere set the captivating atmosphere for this event. People wondering what the year to come would be like, looked over the Junior class. What they saw pleased them, for among the Juniors could be found existing and potential leaders, scholars, and athletes. When the year ended and the Senior colors began to fade, the Junior lines shifted to lead the spectrum of M .H .S. As the Sophomores swung into the 1968-69 school year they brought with them their energy, enthusiasm, willing- ness to help and tremendous school spirit. Under the direction of their advisers. Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin, they plunged eagerly into all school activities, and came out successful and happy in everything. To prove their worth they attained second place in the letter-lighting and using a traffic dance as the setting for their Sophomore Swing, contributed fun and excitement to the M.H.S. school year. Their assembly also provided gaiety and entertainment for the studentbody. As the Sophomores looked back over a fun year, they continued to push forward to their Junior year with great expectations and hope. Brad Anderson. Steven Kjar, Rebecca Nelson. Sharon Nielson. The staff members have held “sparkle sessions” to add interest to the already great paper. They kicked “that gunky old mimeograph machine” when it wouldn’t work, continually ran out of boo boo juice” erased and “patched” many stencils. The staff is very grateful to Mr. Larry Stahle for printing the pictures in the Trumpet. 53 Top left: Debra Cox. Debbie Stott. Mary Wintch. Dari Mangelson. Don Findlay. Margaret Graser. The yearbook staff has worked around the theme of “Enter the Young”, which has been most gratifying. The work has been well rewarded by the results, which really show the youth of today and exemplifies some of their ideas. 54 Top Left: Kay Barton, Kevin Cox. Lamar Barton. The National Honor Society has been a very active club at Manti High School this year, and a very achieving one. This club is rather an exclusive one, with members meeting certain requirements such as: a 3.5 or better, grade point average; qualities of leadership; service to the school and community; and character and over-all well-roundedness. 65 HERE THEY COME RELEASED AFTER YEARS IN HIDING K V W brn M LETTERLIGHTING Friday, Sept. 13, 1968 was the date of the annual letter- lighting in Manti Canyon. The letter-lighting this year was a big success. Cans for the letters were gathered and made ready to be lighted and each cheered for his letter. Later at the program around the campfire, we sang songs and there was truly a feeling of oneness. At the Student Council dance in the Armory, the well deserving seniors were named the winners of the letter lighting. HAYRIDE At 6:30, the rolling of wheels and the rumbling of haywagons could be heard as the students of M.H.S. headed toward Gunnison Reservoir. This year's hay- ride was under the super- vision of the Studentbody Officers. Soon after arriving, the faculty served hamburg- ers and punch. The final destination for the night was at the gym where the paperstaff spon- sored a dance. Music by the First Division was enjoyed. Everyone shared the feeling that it was one of the best activities of the year. 69 FHA INSTALLATION INSTALLATION 70 PEP ASSEMBLIES 74 PEP ASSEMBLIES 75 CANDIDS OF CLASSES, ♦ SCHOOL SONG Oh schoolmates raise the cry, That shall pierce the blue on high, Three rousing cheers unto our high school, For we never shall forget, Nor shall we e'er regret, The happy days we spent at Manti High School. It was one of the best dances of the school year. It was a traffic dance and had so many rules that almost every- one was in jail most of the time. It seemed that no matter what the people did, they ended up in jail! The jail was very easy to get into, and, thank heavens it was not hard to get out. Even the ones that spent more time behind bars” than out dancing had fun and everyone seemed to be having a great time; except maybe the cops', who happened to be some of the long suffering faculty members. 81 ROYALTY FIRST ATTENDANTS: Connie Sorensen. The night of all nights, the Junior Prom was held amid decorations of camillon and rose sur- rounded by castle walls. They danced to the theme of “Somewhere from West Side Story. Before the Prom a reception was held in honor of the royalty, the chairman, co-chairman and their parents. At ten-thirty the Juniors promenaded to the music of the theme and the royalty was crowned. A group of the Juniors also sang the theme song. The music for the occasion was provided by McLoyd Erickson and his orchestra. This year the students of our school have developed visions of the future and begun climbing the ladder of life toward these goals. The youth of our school has worked without the stifling of age, with energy, newly released. Our youth are entering the world of today with tasks, questions and an education to complete. Part of this education is learning to think for themselves, more than any- one thinks. Here they come, some a leading and some a following, but always entering. Learning not only to think, but to dare, not only to think but to care. As the school year closes, many may feel it is also the exiting of the young; but it isn’t, the young will continue to enter, into the bigger, better, and more fruitful things of the future.
