Today s younger generation has grown up in the midst of the greatest scientific breakthrough in history, one which simultaneously shrank and extended the ordinary man's world almost beyond recognition. To the older ordinary man it is somewhat appalling. Youth, however, is not appalled by new vistas. Having glimpsed the infinite, the young are not afraid to reappraise the finite. John Marquand once said that the most important qualification for leadership was mileage. Marquand's was a wise statement. These young men and women are today's children, living in tomorrow's world, preparing for the real take- over when they have acquired their mileage. Today their strength lies in their energy and their ability to dream. Their weakness may lie in their impatience. World conditions have created a sense of urgency which permeates and influences all our actions. The frontier of history is always new, always old, everlastingly present. With human knowledge increas- ing at a constantly accelerating rate, vast opportunities have never been more challenging, but they in- clude, unfortunately, the opportunity to make fools of ourselves. For in spite of the almost incredible improvement in our techniques, the things which make Sammy run remain curiously the same. Experience is merely the end product of trial and error. The young are not particularly interested in ex- perience. They have been brought up in a world where doing the impossible is part of the daily routine. They are impatient of barriers which, to their minds, seem too often to be merely the end product of ex- perience. They are intelligent, alert, enthusiastic, but above all they are young. Because they are young they feel themselves to be different and only time will convince them of that error. Before we know it the new generation, with, its fierce energy drained off, will be taking its place on the judgment seats, glad of the opportunity to sit down, presumably to do some thinking. It will watch a new breed gallop off in all directions knowing from experience that eventually a certain number of them are going to put their feet into gopher holes. Today's Take-over Generation will have then acquired mileage. This is the Changing World they face.
