To the older ordinary man it is somewhat appalling. Youth, however, is not appalled by new vistas. Having glimpsed the infinite, the young are not afraid to reappraise the finite. John Marquand once said that the most important qualification for leadership was mileage. Marquand's was a wise statement. These young men and women are today's children, living in tomorrow's world, preparing for the real take- over when they have acquired their mileage. Today their strength lies in their energy and their ability to dream. Their weakness may lie in their impatience. World conditions have created a sense of urgency which permeates and influences all our actions. The frontier of history is always new, always old, everlastingly present. With human knowledge increas- ing at a constantly accelerating rate, vast opportunities have never been more challenging, but they in- clude, unfortunately, the opportunity to make fools of ourselves. For in spite of the almost incredible improvement in our techniques, the things which make Sammy run remain curiously the same. Experience is merely the end product of trial and error. The young are not particularly interested in ex- perience. They have been brought up in a world where doing the impossible is part of the daily routine. They are impatient of barriers which, to their minds, seem too often to be merely the end product of ex- perience. They are intelligent, alert, enthusiastic, but above all they are young. Because they are young they feel themselves to be different and only time will convince them of that error. Before we know it the new generation, with, its fierce energy drained off, will be taking its place on the judgment seats, glad of the opportunity to sit down, presumably to do some thinking. It will watch a new breed gallop off in all directions knowing from experience that eventually a certain number of them are going to put their feet into gopher holes. Today's Take-over Generation will have then acquired mileage. This is the Changing World they face. Administration Autographs Board of Education Left to right, sitting: Marriel O. Being classed as the little Sophomores made us all the more determined to set an outstanding record in both athletics and scholastics. In the athletic field, our basketball team led out with a record of six wins to two losses. The team exhibited exceptional sportsmanship, ability, and enthusiasm which are all typical of the class. The crowning event of the year, though, was the Sophomore Swing. Carrying out the chosen theme, Monster Mash, our dance proved to be the peerless event of the year for us. With the end of the school year, we are eagerly anticipating our Junior year. We have left our mark in many extracurricular activities as well as in scholastics, and we are planning to do so next year. - 14 - David Carter Ann Cannaday Paul Johnson Katherine Nielson Guy McArthur Dale Nicholls Howard Knight Kathleen Hansen John Hall Peggy DeMill Gary Olson - 15 - Don Christensen Celeste Denton Bruce Sorenson La Von Allen Kenneth Nielson Larry Larsen Clair Anderson Sharon Draper Stephen Strode Bobby Clark Sharron Hansen Russell Braithwaite Jack Peterson Jim Peterson Dee Keisel Christine Nelson Max Reid Steven Peterson Sandra Lyons Gary Anderson - 16 - „Autographs Ijuniors J - Jocular U - Understanding N - Nice I - Impulsive 0 - Optimistic R - Reliable S - Sensible The past year has been a big one for the Juniors. Though one of the smallest classes at MHS, the journalism group has systematically turned out a bi-weekly edition of Templar Trumpet through- out the year. Convinced that the school-paper performs a definite service to the school, the all-girl class has attempted to keep student body members posted on newsy developments, to build school spirit, integrate activities within the school, editorialize on current problems, and also to include a bit of humor and featurized items of interest to readers. Acting as editor for the '62-'63 school year, Margaret Dyreng has suc- cessfully managed the publication despite such disadvantages as having no fellows in the class to act as sports editor. Class members agree that journalistic effort encourages habits of clear, concise written expression, accuracy in typing and the various aspects of the duplicating process. Poetry Winners In the Commercial Meet, participants were: left to right Launa Larson, Ruby Duncan, Geneva Tucker, NaDean Arm- strong, Helen Thompson, Ann Canna- day, David Anderson, Linda Keisel, Janis Stout, Lewis Bagnall, Susan Cox, Suzanne Holm, and Barbara Scow (not pictured). Mrs. Nell was advisor. The shorthand team took 4th place, with Suzanne winning 4th. Helen won 2nd place in bookkeeping and the team won 3rd. Among the several hundred Utah high school students involved in the studies of foreign lands were MHS enthusiasts, representing our school at the State Model U.N. Delegates were left to right: M. Dyreng, B. Findlay, D. Barton, G. Barnett, D. Shand, W. McGarry, C. Nelson, and K. Keller (not pictured). Their advisor was Mr. Clair Erickson. M-Vay With the boys washing the M and the girls clean- ing the school, M-Day proved a success for all who parti- cipated. After spending a grueling morning in the warm school building or on the mosquito infested mountainside, MHS'ers joyfully greeted an afternoon of excitement at the Manti City Park. Weary workers were treated to a re- freshing lunch by the faculty. Although we had a small turn out, we spent an active afternoon. Volleyball, tug of war, and softball were among the games played. The big event of the afternoon proved to be the powder-puff football. Con- sidering that it was powder-puff, there were several casualties on both sides. However, the girls romped the boys with the lop-sided score of 21-0. Finishing off the day's activities was the FHA Record Hop. Highlighting the dance was the Senior raffle. The irony of the situation was that the three prizes were won by Seniors. Something rotten in Denmark? - 73 - yearbook Staff Editor Helen Thompson confers with Business Manager Linda Olsen and future Clarion Editor Kay Keller about yearbook plans. Because Elaine Stewart is moving out of the area, Kay was appointed ’64 Editor. Co-editor Elaine Stewart enjoys a bit of humor as she and the business staff Rosmary Anderson, LaVee Jensen, and Ruth Clarke prepare strategy for solicit- ing ads. Discussing layout with Art Editor Wendy McGarry and Body-copy Writer Regina McQuarrie, Advisor Mr. Cannaday finds something to laugh about for a change. - 74 - Honors Science Fair Special Manors The annual Honors Assembly produced reactions of smiles and humor. Some went away bedecked with medals enough to make a Gen- eral envious. The Competitive Assembly was won by the junior class--”Mr. Music, U.S.A. It is the third year that a jun- ior class has won the assembly award. All-around athlete etc, etc, etc. . . Drama and Speech ! Scholarship, Physical Science, etc, etc, etc, .... Music - 76 - Honor Speakers Richard Wintch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Wintch, and Helen Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Thomp- son, earned the honor of being Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, of their grad- uating class. Valedictorian t Salutatorian Both maintained a near perfect scholas- tic record in addition to their other outstanding achievements in clubs, organizations, and extra-curricular activities. Student Qovernntent Smiles of victory on their faces, next year's student body officers point to the elec- tion registration book fter a close race. Pres. Greg Maylett (right) and Lynda Johnson, vice- pres. (seated) will share the leadership duties with activity agent, Tony Anderson, and sec- retary Barbara Anderson. - 77 - With stealth and furtiveness, Mr. Cannaday and year- book staff members managed to slip this page past Editor Helen Thompson. As Utah's delegate to the Stu- dent Burgesses in Williamsburg, Vir- ginia, former capital of that State, Bruce Findlay was among 94 students which consisted of Student Council Pres, of the 50 states and AFS students from 31 different countries, who dis- cussed their future under the leadership of important magazine writers and teachers. Helen, assisted by her brother- in-law and his son and daughter, pre- sented an enlightening and educational assembly on her six months' stay in Guatemala. Costumes, music, slides, and native pieces brought a new insight from Latin America to us all. Citizenship, scholarship, service—a credit to MHS These accolades go to this smiling group chosen by the faculty each quarter—for these qualities. And capturing the Top Templar of the Year Award was Margaret Dyreng, who was also honored as a quarter Top-Templar. The prognostication was presented by three messengers on a white fluffy cloud which floated across stage as if on cue and the lyrics of Magic Mo- ments rang down the curtain for the last time for this Class of 1963. Dear Diary:” FINALE - MAGIC MOMENTS Heavenly Prognosticators - 81 - Commencement The Commencement exercises of 1963 were climaxed fittingly when the class rose to sing the school song. The contrast of white robes beside the bright red worn by the boys was as eye-evoking as the commencement address was ap- pealing to the ear of all in attendance. The honors speakers, showing astute thinking and maturity, delivered their speeches with conviction and clarity as the beckoning finger of life drew to a close their high school career. MR.
