The C ass History of 19 9 On a clear bright morning in August of 1955, forty-five Freshies made their first entrance into the halls of M. H. S. Although we were G reen we weren't a bit shy. In our first class meeting we elected Bob Carter, Pre- sident: Kenny Bertrand, Vice-President, Ora Lee La More, Secretary-Treasurer: Stuart Switzer, Student Council Representatives and Ora Lee La More our Annual Staff member. Mr. Shreffler and Mrs. Emmons were our class- sponsors. Later in the year Bob Carter andOra Lee La More were elected best Freshmen. As Freshmen we thought our world had really been turned topsy-turvy when we had to dress that way for initiation. CClothes inside out and backwardsg After suffering through that, we looked forward to being sophomores. Wilma Brown, Charles Abbott, Jerry Pearce and Robert Lagesse, joined us during the year, but Patsy Uran, Pam Cummings and Judy Marek moved elsewhere. Our members swelled to fifty-sixinourSophomore year by adding Mae Prairie, Pat Holmes, Mary Lou Jacobs, Sandy Lawrence, Tanny Trepanier, Jim Saunders, Norma Trzmer, Sandra Benoit, Sandra Mettlock, and Bill Cas- per. We closed the year with fifty-four members as Sandra Bacon and Smart Switzer left. Officers for the year were Bob Carter, President: Kent Crouse, Vice-President: Ora Lee La More, Secretary-Treasurer: Kenny Bertrand and Jerry Pearce, Student Council members: Kelly Leverett was our Amiual Staff representative and Kelly Leverett and Bob Carter were selected as best Sophomores. Sponsors for the year were Mrs. Rice and Mr. Hayes. Betty Niet- feldt and Sandy Lawrence were elected members of the Girls Athletic Board. As Sophomores we enjoyed the oppor- tunity of initiating this year's Green Freshmenl! Seeing their green make-up and turned about clothes brought back memories. The farll F reshmen-Sophomore party was fun tool What a wonderful feeling it was to know we were Juniors in the fall of 1957. Officers elected for the coming year were: President, Harold Schroth: Vice-President, Kent CrousegSecretary,Mary Lou Jacobs: Treasurer, Kelly Leverett: Student Council members were Stuart Switzer and Bob Carter. On theGirls Athletic Board were Betty Nietfeldt and Sandy Lawrence. Annaul staff representatives were Kelly Leverett, Darlene Reardanz, Mary Lou Jacobs, Kathy Pilcher and Judy Wilson. Mr. Shreffler and Mr. Battrell were our sponsors. Best Juniors were Judy Wilson and Bob Carter. Our first highlight of the year was the Junior Class Play, a three act comedy entitled The Boarding House Reach, directed by Mr. Harvey Battrell. The Junior-Senior Prom given in May was our sec- ond big event. Tropical Fantasy was the theme of the all-night prom which included a movie and a chicken feast in the early morning hours. During the year Della Spaenhower, Lowell Jacobs, Jackie Friego, Phyllis Simmons and Stuart Sweitzer joined our class, while KentC rouse, Ronald Curl, Ora Lee La More, Betty Nietfeldt, Harry Mimiish, Norma Turner, Kenny Triebull, James Saunders, Mary Ann McNulty and Charles Abbott were no longer with us. Ah, Seniors at lastIClass officers for this all important year were: President, Harold Schroth, Vice-President: La Vern Keller: Secretary. Judy Wilson: Treasurer, Sandy Lawrence. Our class sponsors were Mr. Hayes and Mr. Bieber. Student Council representatives elected were: Bob Carter, Stuart Switzer and Kenny Bertrand. Senior An- nual staff members were Kelly Leverett, Darlene Reardanz, Mary Lou Jacobs, Judy Wilson, Eloise Gordon, Kathy Jo Pilcher and Harold Schroth. We were glad to have Tom Thornton join our class of 1959 but were sorry to lose Larry Pool, Phyllis Simmons, and Jackie F reigo. On November 7, we presented the Senior Class Play Shy Guy under the direction of Miss Bette Rockwood. Some of the other money raising activities for that all important Senior trip have been: built forty pigloos, three paper drives, sold school pencils, basketball programs, bedroom slippers and numerous other things. It was well worth our efforts because we throughly enjoyed our class trip. Now, as we end our school days at M. H. S. with graduation we look forward to what the future holds. Reported by Kathy Jo Pilcher Harold Schroth 27 Trip Down the Years from now on memories wings, l'll see again this hall And here's the list of characters that I'll again recall. If you admire intelligence, then Lowell's just your type. Aside his theories even Albert Einsteins look like tripe. Kathy, cute but studious, has planned her future path. We'll see her back in Ivied-halls, but this time - teaching math. Although our Marsha is so quiet, she's really quite a gal. She has ability and brains and she's, to all, a pal. And there's Ron Feldsien, standing there, so tall and debonair. Can you imagine him without his closely crew-cut hair? As president of F.H.A., this Judy served this year Her homemaking will be well used, of this we have no fear. Harold McQueen - a scientific farmer hopes to be His crop production will upset our land's economy. Tanny, lately starry-eyed, was pricked by cupids dart A Fraternity pin is what she wears to show whose got her heart. Jerry Pearce can surely send his auto's wheel awhirl 1'll give you odds, his passenger will be a junior girl. Della, who so greatly helped produce our Junior play will through study and hard work, a surgeon be someday. For Harold Schroth, our president, the future holds no fear. He will surely gain success as an agricultural engineer. Judi, our class beauty has a rosy future life: A model secretary or somebody's model wife. Johnny Griffith's dimples and his sense of humor will in future years quite happily be in our memories still. Sandi Lawrence led the cheers this year - for you and me Her personality makes friends wherever she may be. ln any sport, LaVern can always exercise control. To follow Mr. Battrell's steps is what he's made his goal. Sherry Doty needs a dual personality She hopes to have an office job and still a housewife be. Bob Carter always can be found, within his Chevelet. with a mind like his he'll soon direct more than our two class plays Sharon Kannberg, very aptly plays the clarinet She hopes a stewardess to be in a super-sonic jet. A small but awfully peppy lad is Johnny Altmeyer Of his good humor, jokes and fun we surely never tire. Donna is so courteous, we really think she's grand And if ever you're introuble she'11 extend a helping hand. Dennis Bringelson was great as drummer in our band His experience in F.F.A. will help him till the land. Sandra Benoit, just like a girl, can't quite make up her mind. As a secretary or a nurse, she'l1 be the best you'l1 find. Adrian, so tall and shy, is still considered tops. He helped by adding to our plays, nice scenery and props. 28 Hall of M. H. . Mae Prarie's always full of fung to know her is a ball. She livened Senior classes up fand also study ha11.J And there stands Kenny Bertrand with his face all wreathed in smiles I wonder why his favorite song is always Nine More Miles. A busy secretary is what Darlene hopes to be But somewhere in her plans you'l1 find a husband and family. Ron Pulaski is so quiet, we hardly know he's here. But in his car, it's never hard to guess when he is near. Jackie's plans are all complete, she finds no need to guess. She'll find excitement and romance as an airline stewardess. Bill, as Limpy , was so tough, he made our hearts near stop. I think the perfect job for him would be a traffic cop. As a nurse, our Mary Lou, will really make a hit. She'll save many lives, I know, through ability and wit. Robert Lagesse, a rich successful farmer soon will be His own fields of hybrid grain will wave for all to see. To be a prize stenographer is Phyliss Simmon's plan. I bet her future business life includes a business man. Wayne is really quite a man when he's behind a gun. To Africa he'll go to hunt for living and for fun. In home economics, Janice Cox does certainly excel. Any phase of homemaking, she'll do especially well. A scientist of sorts, Charles Reed, will travel to a star. In fact he soon may do it in his speedy, souped-up car. Eloise now plans to have a busy business life. It seems more probable she'll be a local farmer's wife. Lynn has planned his future well - to be a baseball star. His mighty hits and daring plays will soon the sport's world jar! Stuart was great in our class playsg he really was a card. I bet his future life includes an academy award. Voted most polite was Tom, who came to us this year. His personality and smile are always full of cheer. The goal of cub-reporter is where Pat has set her eyes. Her future work will surely rate at least a Pulitizer Prize. Bob Johnson knows just what he wants, he soon the fields will clear. lt just could be that he'll become Star Farmer some fine year. Sandra Metlock has no fears, no doubts in mind lurk, She'll find success and happiness in local office work. Dennis Curl the silent type, we surely won't forget The field of mechanics is his plan and what he wants he'll get. And what of me the poet, - well, my plans are all complete After college l will teach the art of note and beat. Well, that's the last - the entire cast - the curtain soon will fall. But still our laughter, joy and tears will echo through this hall. And though these halls may crumble from beneath the ivy-vine we'll still remember when we were - the class of Fifty-nine. Kelly Joan Leverett 29 Cfass We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty- Nine, being of sound mind and having a wonderful memory and generous spirit, do hereby will these last memories and tokens of appreciation to the classes which will follow us. Goodness I am anxious to see how everyone looks after so long a time. How lucky we are that our class member KENNY BERTRAND has furnished us with these lovely picnic grounds. KENNY has taken time out from his baseball club Birdies Birdbrains to fly to his 30,000 acre ranch here west of good old Manteno. Oh, here comes some more of the Midwest 's leading farmersg HAROLD MC QUEEN who owns a 20,000 acre farm, CHARLES REED who runs the Maple Grove Farm and is a top figure, in the Hereford cattle business, and BOB JOHNSON of the Johnson Estate, with his herd now numbering 10,000. Over the far horizon approaches' a large van -- our Hollywood classmates -- BOB CARTER is the director of the spectacular show entitled Carters Little Pills. Among them we greet their hair stylist MARSHA ANDREWS now famous for her Yul Bryner Cut for women. Publicity agent SANDRA BENOIT has replaced the famous Louella Parsons. Here come the stars!! JERRY fTab Hunterj PEARCE, RON fTony Perkinsj FELDSIEN and TOM fPat Waynel THORNTON. With them we see, JOHN KJ ack Bennyj GRIFFITH who doesn't look a day over eighteen Cl-le'll probably be eighteen for another twenty years toolll. Who is that, that BILL lAtlasJ JOHNSON is carrying. Why it's JOHN ALTMYER the show's tumbler. WOW! Who have we here? KATHY fBardotj PILCHER and DARLENE fMonroeJ REARDANZ. We can't forget the singers Jan, San, and Sher alias J ANICE COX, SANDRA METLOCK and SHERRY DOTY. I must dash over and see what those two girls are laughing at. Oh no, they haven't changed abit it's PAT and MAE the Comedy Team of Holmsey and Prairie Chick, Chicago's latest theatrical hit. Maybe they will perfomi for us a little later. Oh, my ears, that noise, it sounds like a siren! Look everyone, our student monitors of '59 have rapidly advanced themselves to high authority! They are now Chief DENNIS BRINGELSON and Assistant Chief STUART SWITZER of the Washington D. C. Police Force. Why! They are escorting the President of the United States. Of course, you all know LAVERN KELLER is our President. LAVERN tries to keep in contact with all his old buddies. JACKIE FREIGO is the President's know all, do all, secretary. .I had the pleasure of attending the President's inauguration at which SANDI LAWRENCE sang, a newly composed selection by KELLY LEVERETT. The President has recuperated nicely from his appendectomy performed last year by the former lady wrestler and now top surgeon DELLA SPAENHOWER. LAVERN is busy working hand in hand with LOWELL JACOBS our Einstein of '89, in designing the electronically equipped Space White House on the moon. Here come more cars!! There's JUDI WILSON, who is secretary to the Oklahoma Gas Company, President, DONNA CARMAN and JUDY RICE who are secretaries to the MOORE for Less grocery store owned by LYNN MOORE. We hear that DENNIS CURL is the owner of Curlies Clever Customizing a weight reducing salon. I'm sure glad KENNY has an airport, there's a plane about to land. Let's see who it is! The sign says Tanny's Terrific Traveler owned by --- you guessed it --- TANNY TREPANIER. Here comes TANNY and her crew now. That crew looks familiar -- Why it is familiar -- its stewardesses are SHARON KANNBERG and PHYLISS SIMMONS and there are the pilots -- RON PULASKI and HAROLD SCHROTH. Wow, look at that flashy atomic poweredContinenta1l! Why of all people it looks like ADRIAN ASHLINE he must have struck it rich!!! No wonder his oil wells are good to the last drop with WAYNE ROGERS and BOB LAGESSE drilling them. Well I guess everyone's here we can start eating -- My goodness where's MARY LOU -- here she comes, breathless as usual I! She says she just couldn't tear herself away from her ermine - lined, heated swimming pool. MARY LOU is not only capable of basking in the solar rays, but she instructs student nurses at the Merciless Clinic owned by MISS JACOBS herself. It is my sincere hope that some of the members of this class will pause before and enter in the door bearing the name- plate Humanities. Our cilivization can only advance as rapidly as we learn to live by ourselves and keep solving each others problems. The door to truth and righteousness is more easily concealed in a multitude of half-truths and invalid conclusions. Our practical experience in art, journalism, and business will demonstrate to you the need for related school subjects which we are studying. By giving recognition to students in a book of this kind shows the accomplishments in scholastic and other school activities. It develops school spirit and gives us a sense of security in our school life. Our yearbook also wins friends in the community by informing parents and others about our work and activities of our school. It is a valuable opportunity to be a member of the yearbook staff because it helps us develop consideration and tolerance, a sense of responsibility, personal initiative and cooperativness. The entire staff would 48 like to thank Mrs. David Long for her help and guidance in producing this year's outstanding '59 Mantenau.
