XV X£.r ' Ar LAWRENCE PARK ' PfLeAide,nt 14 Dr. Lawrence Park, President 15 Memorium His name was Ed Gassner, and he was, among other things, a professor in the biology department. What appealed most about Dr. Gassner were two things: first, he wasn ' t afraid to be himself, and second (and most important), the self he was trying to be was worth being. Creativity was a vital part of his life, and the essential aspect of a creative person is that he sees his function is not to be, but to become. He was an up-to-date scientist with a Ph.D., publications in biochemistry, and interest in bio-ethics and radiation biology. He was something of an accomplished photographer, painter, and writer, an avid gardener, and a good carpenter. Dr. Gassner saw being right here at M.S.C. as a terrific set of opportunities. He was enchanted by the things you could do and learn at Mansfield, by the help and encouragement that were so willingly given, and by the wealth of information that was his merely for the asking at the library and elsewhere. Learning and doing were exciting for Ed. Gassner. His death had something of the symbolic and quixotic aspects of his nature. He died planting potatoes in his garden. His last activity was focused firmly on the future, but like the last activities of all of us, it was left incomplete. And yet — the potatoes found a way to grow. There are much worse ways of living and dying. Much worse ways. by Dr. Stephen H. Bickham edited by Deborah J. Weissenburger 163 A New Look For The Mountie Band A new marching style developed this year by the Mountie Marching Band received a standing ovation at its first appearance of the 1976 football season. The general philosophy of marching bands is changing. More and more schools are going to the corps style of show. We have been considering this change for the past three years and it was felt that this was the year to make the change. Field formations were designed to enhance the quality of the sound of the music and to create a complementing effect. With the former style of precision marching, instruments within the band were turned in various directions and the quality of the sound was lost. With the new style more control of instrument direction is achieved and the quality of sound is greatly improved. Countless hours were spent putting the new style together. Students had to develop confidence in their own abilities. There were many frustrating moments at the beginning of the season. Changes were being made constantly, even up to the rehearsal for the final show. The band tries to perform what appeals to the audience, making changes to suit what the audience will best respond to. Often subtle changes, such as rewriting the finale to a different key to bring out a better sound, will develop stronger audience reaction. Capping off the successful transition, the new marching style was presented to nearly 70,000 people at Shea Stadium in New York City during the half time of the New York Jets - Miami Dolphins game on November 7. The 1976 Mountie Band Staff is as follows: Richard N. Nearly 100 student members from 14 nationwide chapters attended. Sigma Zeta is an honorary science and math society so it was fitting that a majority of time was devoted to the presentation of student papers ranging from biology and chemistry to physics and computer science. Other activities included trips to Corning Glass and the Grand Canyon, a Planetarium show and nonstop film show, the election of National Officers, and various business meetings. Highlights were the awarding of the Founder ' s Cup to the most active chapter and presentation of Honor Awards for personal scholarship and achievement within Sigma Zeta. The convention culminated in a banquet Friday night in Manser Cafeteria followed by a guest speaker in Straughn Auditorium. Afterwards, the students were invited to an informal party. All members expressed enjoyment and are looking forward to next year ' s convention at Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana.
