PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This Carontawan will probably be the single most important document as a reminder of your Mansfield experience. Graduates in recent years have been faced with crises from the Vietnam War to unemployment. Yet, no matter how critical the problem of the time has been, we have come to grips with the issues. In this period of rededication to the principles upon which our country was founded, the Class of 1976 has an exciting future ahead. Now, more than ever before, college graduates will be looked upon to provide leader- ship, to rekindle a spirit in America that will carry us not only into the 21st century, but one that will lay the foundation for the next 200 years. The three thematic areas for the observance of America's Bicentennial - Heritage, Festival USA, and Horizons - also hold a special significance in education. For more than lO0 of the past 200 years, Mansfield State College has been a leader in education, with a considerable impact upon the northern Pennsylvania region. Preparing personnel in the science of teaching has been, and still is, one of Mansfield's primary missions. A more recent emphases in the arts reflects the College's service to the region and its ability to adapt to the needs of the people it serves. Our country is diverse historically and culturally. Mansfield State College, to has become diverse in its programs in the arts, in education, in athletics, and parallels the festival aspect of the Bicentennial. The trend in education, which included innovative courses and programs, mirror the College's designation as an Hexperimenting college.H In the context of the Bicentennial, Horizons '76 is asking Americans to commemorate their past by looking to the future. This is where you, the Class of 1976, play a major role. How well we cope with the challenge facing us will be a true measure of the Mansfield experience. Our expectation is that the education you have begun here will help you to face these challenges to improve the quality of life, citizenship and the development of community for the good of all of us.
