PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Graduates of 1971 browsing through these pages some 30 years hence will likely have a mixed experience. Reactions will be as varied as the many sections of the me- mento itself. There will be a sense of incredibility. It will all seem like yesterday. And yet 30 years will have passed. It will be just about that time in life when there is an awareness of how fleeting it is. There will be some amusement. So much of the format will seem outdated: the art- work, the photo reproductions, even the writing styles; and the hair-dos, the fashions, the beards, male tresses, the mores and idiosyncrasies of the day may well have been anachronisms, as well as signs of change. There will be some nostalgia. Believe it or not, as seen from three decades hence, life today may have seemed a great deal happier. As this is written, however, we live with now; our curiosity or historical shock in the year 2000 is the reality of today. It is not likely there will be the crisis of another Viet Nam, and surely we will have come to grips with crime, addiction, pollution and problems of race — as we know these issues. But there will be other crises. How well we cope with our daily realities will be the true measure of the Mansfield experience. Our expectation is that the education you have begun here will help you to face these realities of living and, beyond that, will have prepared you to help others who are less well prepared — no matter how critical are the problems of the times. May 11, 1971 LAWRENCE PARK President 15
