This yearbook will be- come more valuable to you as the years go on as it will assist you in recalling the splendid years you spent with your fellow classmates. He can often be seen whizzing around in his blue Ford, or stuffing himself on ham and pizza, An officer in our F. F. A. , he is known for his depend- ability. This quality will carry him far. JOHN BARDEN A sincere personality, plus a flashing smile has made John a friend of everyone. His participation on the yearbook staff and on the prom committee have shown his interest in class activities. His hobby of photog- raphy, along with his talent of making friends, will carry John far in his chosen field as an x-ray technol- ogist . JANET BARRON A sudden burst of laughter tells us that Janet is near. She has shown outstanding ability as a cheerleader, With her warm and friendly personality, she is sure to be happy, Laugh and the world laughs with you. KAREN BAUM Back to us after a year in New Hampshire, Kate has once again added her quiet charm to our class, Skat- ing, reading, and swimming are just a few of her var- ied interests which promise her a bright and happy fu- ture. This striking blonde shows that brains and beauty do mix. Judie, an honor student, is assistant editor of the HI-LIGHTS, and is a talented participant in many music activities. She is sure to find success in any career she choses. Sewing, cooking, knitting, crocheting, roller skating, and ice skating best describes our busy Donna, She always has some project, this year generally home- making, up her sleeve. NANCY BENNETT Always on the go, Nancy manages to have a good time wherever she is. When she came here from South Dakota last year, our class gained an outstand- ing student. Nancy's ambition is to become a social welfare worker, JUDITH BESANCENEY GRA CE BOLT Quiet Grace graces our school with her deep religious convictions. Hardly ever seen without her Bible, she travels her Christian path. As you may have guessed Grace plans to enter the field of religious service. DONNA JEAN BOYDEN CAROL BRA DWA Y Happy-go-lucky Carol came to us from California last year. She has since served capably in many class activities and made our class much happier with her humor, Faithful Carol spends many of her after -school hours typing for the HI-LIGHTS and working as liter- ary chief ofthe MANSCRIPT. J A MES BROWN Jim may seem quiet at first glance, but once you get to know him, you'll find he can be as devilish as any one. His quiet look may come from his love of na- ture and the sports of the great outdoors. Jim's sin- cerity will always bring him great happiness, i CATHERINE BURKE This statuesque brunette was Mansfield's representative at the Flaming Foliage Festival at Renova. She is the band's solo clarinetist and attended District Band. Cathi's warm personality and quick wit make her a friend worth hav ing. WILLIAM CA DY Bill blows his coronet like an angel, yet a nuclear engineering career interests him, He can be found working at the A8rP when school is not in session. A hard worker, but always ready for a good laugh, that's our Bill. This vivacious miss is always found where there is fun. Besides her activity in the F.H. A. , she is interested in all sports. Ann's four horses are her pride and joy, so she can often be found with them. We are sure Ann will have a happy future - she will make it so. IUDITH CASSELBERRY Gay, carefree Judy is active and interested in many things. She is an outstanding typist and uses this abil ity to type for the HI-LIGHTS and MANSCRIPT. She also is an excellent dancer and skater. Judy's person- ality and talents will bring her much happiness, ANN CHA MBERLAIN Curly -haired Don's main interests lie in farming and the F. F. A, He has contributed to the organization through his conscientiousness and public speaking abil- ity. Noon hour always finds Don playing basketball with the boys. CAROLE CUMMINGS As a leader of the Pep Club, Cindy, with a drama- tic personality, has contributed a great deal towards the school spirit, Her love of music has been an as- set in our musical organizations, DONALD CUMMINGS BETTY LOU COLEGROVE This active young miss is a whiz at basketball, She is a true sportswoman, which shows in her many ath- letic activities, whether doing a flip on the trampo- line, or shooting the winning basket. Betty is also an excellent student, and hopes to find a career in math or physical education. CHARLES COLEGROVE Chuck's chosen career is farming, During his high school years he has devoted his time to being friendly, Although rather quiet, Chuck has proven himself a valuable member of our class. CAROLE COMFORT This cute little blonde is known for her ability to sew. Besides excelling as an F. H. A. student, she is also an active member of chorus and student council. Carole's quality of being helpful will carry her far. ROBERT COX This tall blonde enjoys working with his hands. I-le is active in F.F, A., and a valued player on the F.F. A. basketball team, Bob would like to start his own car repair shop after he finishes school, MICHAEL CUN NINGHAM This ambitious fellow can be found where there's fun. He also has his own car. You never catch him He is also quick -witted in the classroom. We wish Mike the best of luck, GERA LD DA VEY Jerry is friendly, easy-going, and always has a cheery l-li for everybody, Jerry has been. active in baseball, basketball and soccer, He frequently can be seen up at the bowling alley or lending a helping hand in the Newsroom, Success won't come hard for this fellow, KAY DUNKLEBERGER A sparkling smile and cheery Hello make Kay a friend to all. Her participation in chorus and as a member of the yearbook staff, she has put forth het talents. Her ability in dancing and skating prove her pastimes worthwhile, Kay's pleasing personality wills help her go far in her career of working with airlines, RONALD EN GLISH Ron as he is known to all his friends, has been an active member of the senior class, Ron has played three years of both varsity basketball and soccer, Aside from sports, Ron is an honor student, chorus member, band member and in numerous other extra- curricular activities. in a bad mood, as you can tell by the grin on his face, JOHN ESTEP This little guy has kept the entire class wondering What's next. Having little enthusiasm for studies, John has devoted his time to more important things in life - namely fun. His good humor will take him far in today's world. MYRON FISH members. As an F. F. A, member, Myron has actively partrci pated in basketball and the Parliamentary Procedure Team, His interest has influenced many fellow JANET FOREMAN Janet is a girl with an infectious giggle which can often be heard in the halls. We wish her success in the future. A merry heart goes all the day, Shakespeare LINDA GARSIDE Though she is quiet, Linda has a word for everyone With her sincere smile and cordial manner she is sure to go a long way. As merry as the day is long Shakespeare NANCY GRAFIUS They say beauty killed the beast, but at present, no one is certain. Needless to say, Nancy has been gifted with looks, as well as personality, As a cheerleader, her peppy enthusiasm has often urged the team to vic- tory. Her love of fun and excitement has been en- joyed by all. 'JAMES HARRIS Jim, a prominent member of F.F.A. , likes square dancing. Because his interest is farming, he natural- ly wants to be a farmer. ROBERT HICKS - This tall lad likes sports and hunting. He plays bas- ketball and is a member of the yearbook staff. Bob plans to get a good job and also to get married when he finishes school, JOHN HUFN A GEL Wherever there's fun, you'l1 be sure to find Jack in the midst of it, Jack has a swell personality which enables him to get along with everybody. He can often be seen driving around in a '54 Dodge. He also has a great amount of persuasive ability, as his mag- azine salesmanship ranking attests. DONNA JEAN HULSLAN DER This little miss makes any classroom cheerful and does well in anything she sets her mind to. Her train- ing in F.H. A. will help her in the future. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart, BETTY JACKSON This tall brunette with long, beautiful hair likes sports and sewing. Betty is a member of chorus and F. H. A, She plans to be a beautician. THOMAS JOHNSTON As past president and present vice-president, Tom takes an active role in our class activities. His abil- ity to discuss politics and education are well known to all. He is on the prom committee and is head of our class planning committee, His persevering per- sonality will carry him far in his chosen army career, JAY KENT One of the outstanding typists of our class, Jay's in- terests are mostly connected with the commercial field. He is also an avid hunter and sportsman. Jay's ability to make friends easily insures a happy future. ROBERTA KOWAL A friend in need is a friend indeed. Roberta's twinkling eyes and flashing smile has penetrated even the gloomiest day. Her willingness to lend a helping hand has endeared her to many, WILLIAM KSHIR Slow but steady, that 's Bill. His rare personality, an interest in mechanics, and his good manners are - bound to be helpful in his future. WILLIAM LOVE Dark and handsome, Bill keeps the girls in a dither. He can often be found talking with the boys in the hall during lunch hour. His ability to get along with people will take him far. PA TRICIA LUN N Pat's neatly coiffed head can usually be seen in many a group, Whether she is sharing a friendly chat, singing in the chorus, or editing the HI-LIGHTS, she does an expert job, Patti represented us at Girls' State last year. Business Administration is her chosen career. This petite miss makes up for her height in personality. Her smile and laugh are very contagious, Little friends may prove great friends Don's unique personality, coupled with his quiet man- ner have made Don a friend to all. Masonry is his chosen career, thus he spends much of his time help- ing his father as a mason. DORIS McKAY A esop REN A H MERRICK Always smiling and full of fun, this capable gal has proven her versatility as a member of the MANSCRIPT staff, as class secretary, and as a member of the schoo1's musical organizations, These talents and her friendly personality will take her far in her teaching career. DONALD MOORE THOMAS MORAN This brown-haired 1ad's hobbies and interests are sports He is in soccer, basketball, and chorus. You can of- ten see Tom riding around town at noon in his black '50 Ford. IEA NNE MORGA N A peppy miss' as a cheerleader, accompanied by her scholastic ability in the classroom, make Jeanne an 'all-around' girl. As President of the Student Council, she represents the student body well. She has made contributions to band and chorus throughout her high school career. With her friendly and under- standing personality, she will be assured of a happy future, LEE OBOURN If you see activity that looks like fun, there is Lee. His interest in sports, as well as his participation in class activities, makes him a welcome member of our class. An interesting and enjoyable future is sure for carefree Lee. PHILIP PARKER Phil, as he is known to his friends, can often be seen traveling around town in his '41 Ford coupe. Phil also plays the electric guitar and trumpet. He is always on the lookout for an argument to help pass the time away. MARILYN PUTNAM Although she is quiet, Marilyn makes every word count. Her ability to play the clarinet is a great contribution to the band. A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature. Emerson JAMES RATHBUN Jim is usually seen in the hall creating some sort of nrckus. There is never a dull moment in this tall lanky fellow's life. Jim has also been active in sports, as well as on the credit roll. Success should come easy for Jim. JOHN RIEPPEL A pleasant word and a smile for everyone has made Jack a friend of all. Equal to his ability of getting along with people are his talents in working with machinery, guns, and cars, His present hobbies promise to carry him far in his chosen field as a machinist. JERRY RICE Happy-go-lucky Jerry's interests center around cars and sports. Jerry works for his ifather during his spare time delivering gas. He also can be found tramping through the woods during hunting season. You can often hear his laugh ringing through the halls. With all these qualities, Jerry is assured of a successful life, SHIRLEY ROSE Shirl is always fun to be with, whether in the classroom or just out having fun. As treasurer of our class, working on the class planning committee, and as a member of the yearbook staff, she has willingly helped our class to succeed. Her eagerness to help and friendliness to all promise Shirl a welcome wherever she may go. SUSAN RUSH Peppy Sue always has a smile for everyone, even when the chips are down. With all her talent in music, we know it will open many doors to success. 'Without music, life would be a mistake. Nietzsche DOUGLAS SA RGENT Sarge is an all-around guy. He excels in all sports and is quick witted in the classroom. His trademarks are a cherry Hi, and a catchy grin, Doug also likes A to fish and hunt. A highly successful life is in store for this ambitious fellow, HARRY SCOUTEN Harry likes square dancing and roller skating. He is also interested in cars and has a part time job after school. JOSEPH SHERMAN Joe, a boy who likes hunting, is also an F. F. A, mem- ber and an F. F.A, basketball player. He plans to work on a farm. GERA LD SMITH Jerry's interests are many and varied, Music being his major interest, he naturally aspires to become a musician. Serious thoughts and witty English themes are more of jerry's specialties. KENNETH SMITH Taking an active part in our class as President and as President of the F,F.A, , he continues to widen his scope in farming. Friendly and happy-go-lucky as he is, he maintains a serious outlook on his responsi- bilities. He works actively as a member of our class planning committee. A bright and successful future is predicted for Ken. SYNTHIA SPENCER What this girl lacks in height she makes up for with talent. She lends her support to many activities, and is always willing to lend a helping hand with art work. -This pint-sized gal is art editor of the paper staff, and will go far with her chosen career as a commercial artist. BEVERLY STROCK Patience is a virtue bestowed by the gods. Although Greek Mythology has gone out of style, Patience is here to stay, Bev's quick wittedness and enthusiasm has enlivened many a class. TIMOTHY SUMNER Math-whiz describes this brown-haired lad. Tim is one of these happy-go-lucky people that take time out to enjoy life. MARIORIE TICE This tall girl is very sincere in everything she does. Her interests range from skating to sewing. We wish her only the best. 'Patience is the best remedy for every trouble. Plautus . THOMAS TICE His ready smile, accompanied by a twinkle in his eye, add ro Tom's unassuming personality, Among his varied interests is a flashy blue and white Mercury convertible. His personality assures him of a happy future. GARY VAN NOCKEN Gary livens our classes with his humor and is our class disc jockey for dances. An avid sports fan, he likes ro record play-by-play accounts of M.S. H.S. ' s basketball games. KAREN VOSBURG Mansfield's first Girl-of-the-Month seems to have what it takes for getting good marks. Karen, who is willing to pitch in and work, is a valuable asset to the band, chorus, orchestra, HI-LIGHTS staff, and student council. She also did a fine job as layout chief of this yearbook. BARBARA WALLENBURG Peppy, smiling Babs is an active member of our class. Her interest in music shows in chorus , band, and orchestra. With her many talents and sparkling personality, she will go far in her nursing career. KA THLEEN WA LSH Kathy, a blue eyed, brown-haired basketball player, enjoys ice skating and dancing. A member of pep club and the yearbook staff, she wants to become a nurse. LINDA WATKINS Quiet determination is the secret to this gal's ability. Aiding Mrs. l-ligley in the library is but one of the many tasks she has undertaken to serve our school, Her friendly manner has brought a little sunshine to each and every day. PHYLLIS WELCH Phyllis left our class last fall to marry Robert Smith, a former M.S,H.S. graduate. CARSON WHITTEKER A hazel-eyed bundle of energy, Carson enjoys roller and ice skating, and is a prominent member of our high school band. His witty sense of humor makes h-im well-liked by his fellow classmates and friends. SYLVIA WILSON Pert and pretty Sy is one of our class musicians. But music isn't all she excells in as she writes for the HI-LIGHTS, MANSCRIPT, and MANSFIELD ADVER- TISER, With all her talents and her friendliness, she will do well in her music career. MICKEY CURRAN Mickey's happy personality has won her many friends. RICHARD DAVEY Dick has varied interests, all of which are not in school. EDWARD FURMAN Ed has a keen sense of humor and an intense interest in cars. SHARON GILLESPIE Sharon's school spirit and scholastic ability are well known. SALLY REYNOLDS A cheerful disposition and good looks are becoming to this little gal. MARIE MARPLE Tall, slim, Marie is known for her cheerful smile, SANDRA MAURER A soft voice and a vivacious personality are noticeable traits. MARCIA SEYMOUR A classy dresser with an eye for fun LYNN SHERMAN An active FFAer, Lynn is easy- going and pleasant. DAVID SMITH He's shy yes, but he's lots of fun on any occasion. A snow laden forest transported the dancers into a ling overhead added a magical touch to the dance. After the Grand Promenade, the girl chosen as Queen of the Prom was ed by Mr. James Tomlinson. Refreshments were served at each table, and a good time was had by all. The music was played by the Squires. Senior Prom land of enchantment. The stars twink- Miss Shirley Ann Rose. She was escort- Cathi Burke was elected to represent Mans- field in the annual Flaming Foliage Festival held at Renova, Pennsylvania. Her escort was Tom Johnston. At the annual May Day ceney was crowned She was picked on the sonallty, academic talent. Judy attended June 16-18. Festival, Judy Besan- Miss Mansfield, 1961 basis of beauty, per- achievement, and the Laurel Festival This year, for the first time, M.I.S.l-LS. elected a representative to the Miss Tiadaghton contest. Sylvia Wilson was chosen for the honor. The contest is a preliminary contest for Miss Pennsylvania and the girls were judged on beauty, personality and talent. The students are all proud that Sy placed in the upper half of the contestants. FHA. The F. H.A. under the guidance of Mrs. Brace, has completed a very successful year. The highlights of the year was the Spring Fashion Show. At that time the girls modeled the various outfits they made. During the school year the F, H.A. sold baked goods and candy. They also checked coats at dances, and helped to make our school life more enjoyable. Advisor FFA. The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of farm boys who are studying vocational agriculture, Founded in Virginia in 1928, the organ- ization has grown rapidly until today there are members in the 50 states and Puerto Rico, The Mansfield Chapter of the F. F,A. is one of the oldest and most active of the more than three hundred F, F.A. Chapters in Pennsylvania. Since the Mansfield Chapter was chartered in 1932, there have been a large number of boys who received training in farming and rural leadership and are raking their place among the progressive farmers in the community. Senior High Concert Band Y 17 Y Y , 4' , Senior High Marching Band Orchestra Senior High Chorus Senior Play The law came to Mansfield March 24, when the senior class presented, as its annual senior play, TWELVE ANGRY MEN, adapted for television by Reginald Rose. The story of TWELVE ANGRY MEN is one of the influence on a jury of one man's belief in the law that a man must be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, The cast of thirteen, stage hand and advisers are to be commended in a fine production. The Tigers posted an overall record of 16-4. Along with the league championship, we entered the Class B playoffs, losing a heartbreaker in overtime to Sayre, 55-54. Height was a big asset, along with a well balanced offense and de- fense. This year's record was as follows: M.S.H.S. Their overall record was 17-2. Basketball COACH HESS Once again the FFA basketball team came through with a very fine team and another winning season, Their overall record was 3-1, bringing Mr. Hess's boys their second winning season in a row. Girls ' Basketball The girls' basketball team, coached by Mrs. Evans, is made up of girls in Senior High School. This year, the team took part in a tournament at Towanda where they advanced as far as the semi-finals and lost to the eventual winners, Towanda. The score was 35-33. The only other game played was with Troy in which Mansfield lost, 38-35. Tumbling Club Soccer COACH The 1960-61 version of the soccer team was not too successful. They showed scrap, determination, and lots of spirit. The lack of scoring hurt them. This year's team posted a 2-3 record, which is as follows MANSFIELD OPPONENT 6 Elkland 4 4 Cowanesque 12 5 Liberty 3 6 Williamson '7 2 North Penn 3 Baseball The 1961 baseball team could produce one of the most successful teams in recent school history. Its main assets center around the three main phases of the gamesg a stout defense, good hitting, and a good pitching staff. Although we didn't bring home the championship, we gained much needed experience and depth for next year. The 1960 version of the Tigers produced a record of 2-4.
