To Mr. Milliren for his constant guidance in our various activities such as the Talent Shows, the Proms, this Yearbook, and his direct- ing of the Senior Play--and to Mr. Mortimer for his ingenuity and in- valuable participation in all of our class projects, especially the Proms, this Yearbook, and his enthusiasm in the Athletic Program, we wish to say, Thank youl 2 .744 JAMWMVWDM . .mu TO the CLASS of 1954: Congratulations on the fine book you have tumed out. Years from now you will appreciate having a book that will re- mind you of the pleasant times you have had in high school. The future will bring to you just about what you take into the future. If you take a desire to work, an interest in your fellowman, and a faith in God, you will reap success and happiness. Others may help you, but your future lies in your own keeping. If you have learned the lessons the schools have tried to teach you--self-reliance, dependability, punc- tuality, service to others, respect for yourself and others, a faith that your life means something worthwhile--you are prepared to face the future. I trust you are well-prepared, and I wish you Godspeed as you leave Mansfield Senior High School. WARREN L . MILLER Sedan! Fawn! The concert band performed at the annual Spring Concert with the Junior band, also at several high school assembly programs. The marching band boasts a victorious season. It car- ried off first prize at the Laurel Festival, Smethport Centennial Parade, and the New York-Penn Firemen's Parade. Other performances included the Knoxville Memorial Day Parade and the Williamsport Mummer's Parade. The biggest trip came when the band represented Mansfield at the Rose Festival in Hershey. The fun at the amusement park, the show in Hershey Arena, and the 5:30 A.M. bedtime will never be forgotten. 7wc2z!efz4 Marlene Decker, Elaine Thomas, and Janice Sweeley--the peppy routines and natty appearance of the Twirlers give the band that little extra touch needed y to make a championship outfit. We want to say Thanks to you, Bob Burn- X ham, for doing such a grargg job in leading our band. The Orchestra is composed of approximately fifty members. Under Mr. Baynes' direction, it performed at the Senior Play: then in co-operation with the Chorus, it presented the Christ- mas Concert. This organization is very active, with many members participating in county, district, and state festivals. Mansfield was host to the 1954 Tioga County Orchestra. Edcvuw The high school Chorus has made outstanding progress this year under its new director, C. Wayne Stringer, of Marietta, Ohio. The group made its first appearance at the formal Christ mas Concert. As in the band and orchestra, several members of the Chorus represented Mans- field at District Chorus in Coudersport. Linda Harris represented us in State Chorus. 5I 6 These six girls have appeared on many programs including those of the high scnool Talent Show, the Winter Chorus-Orchestra Concert, WRFM radio station in Coudersport, County Orchestra, Chorus Concert, and many more. The Sextette wishes to express their thanks to Elizabeth Marvin for her faithful and efficient accompaniment on the piano. Sextette: P. Clark, S. Kendrick, M. Hughes, L. Harris, G. VanDyke, P. McConnell. Zane! Under the direction of Mr. Baynes, this group of volunteers has been faithfully supporting our teams for the past several years, receiving no recognition or awards other than the sheer joy of playing music and the knowledge that they are doing their bit to help keep our school spirit alive. This space has been reserved for you, the members of the Pep Band, as a token of our appreciation for your loyalty and faithfulness. 52 7 aff? ' JIU no Front row: Mr. Hess, M. Hulslander, R. At present there are more than 375,000 members in 6,000 chapters in thousands of high schools across the United States. Pennsylvania alone has more than 300 chapters and 11, 000 members. The Mansfield Chapter was formed in 1932 and is one of the most active FFA Chapters in northem Pennsylvania. Some of the activities of the Chapter during the past year were: took full charge of management and work in a three-acre apple orchard: planted 50,000 forest tree seedlings for local farmers: conducted a vegetable seed sales campaign: participated in local, county, and state judging contests: held a Parents' Night Supper and Program: placed seventh in the Pennsylvania State Project Contestg placed second in the District Parliamentary Procedure Contest at Tunkhannockg sponsored a varsity and junior varsity basketball team in the Tioga County FFA'Leagueg and took part in many other activities. 53 'X -M ...wif William Smith Gordon Harvey Richard Crittenden The Keystone Farmer Degree is the highest degree that can be bestowed upon an individual in the Pennsylvania Association of Future Farmers of America. This honor is limited to one out of every fifty enrolled in vocational agriculture in Pennsylvania. We were honored by having this degree conferred upon three boys from the Mansfield Chapter while at Harrisburg in Jan- uary. These boys were selected for their outstanding achievements and leadership in chapter, school, and community activities. This brings our number to twenty-six Keystone Farmers from the Mansfield Chapter since 1945. ?.7.,4. a - President --------- -William Smith Treasurer ------------ Roger York Vice President ------- Gordon Harvey Representative ---- - --James Booth Secretary -------- Kenneth Powlison Sentinel ---- - - - - Wilbur Smith Corresponding Secretary - - -James Welch Chaplain ----------- Willis Moore Advisors: Charles F. All girls have an opportunity to work on committees, to participate in Chapter activities, to earn Degrees of Achievement, and to hold office. This year the Little Women of Mansfield prepared a program booklet for each mem- ber, which enabled them to be well-informed Chapter members. An FHA purpose was selected for each month, and the planned activities were related to that purpose. The local Chapter sponsored a bus trip to the Corning Glass Center and had an ex- cellent program for United Nations' Day during October. The County Harvest Dance held in November found the girls cast in the role of hostess. They prepared favors for trays at the Blossburg Hospital and sent a package to Korea through CARE in De- cember. The girls participated in the State Farm Show at Harrisburg, with five girls winning awards. They made a contribution to the State FHA Scholarship Fund in January. During the month of February, an item was prepared for the State News Letter. Plans have been drawn up for a Shamrock Queen Dance in March and the Annual Fashion Show and Tea in April. In addition to these activities, representatives were sent to County meetings, Region D meetings, and the State Convention. These girls continue to work TOWARD NEW HORIZONS. 4 WZ 4 'S J 6 ?6 ded 6 fa '7 4 fz a 204. 715-.lagdzg Zaeevz 71 0 e D4 45 an 6 G if CJ' 6 lt!! 6 03 :wt Mary B. She was crowned in a beautiful ceremony in the balcony by Shirley Kendrick, the junior Prom Queen. The Queen's Court was com- posed of Kay Barron, Kay Holbert, Marlene Decker, Myra Booth, and Elizabeth Mar- vin. Blue streamers hung across the gym with a large silver bell in the center of the ceiling. The ballroom was given a touch of Christmas spirit in the form of two large, lighted Chirstmas trees and pine boughs. The well-played music of Gerry Kehler and his Orchestra from Williamsport kept the dancers' feet moving all night. dafetefzda The M.S.H.S. Hot Lunch Program has proved to be a great convenience for teachers and stu- dents alike. A vote of thanks goes to Mrs. Bernice Evans, Mrs. Virgiline Parker, and the stu- dent volunteers who served approximately 190 meals each day to Senior High, Junior High, and Elementary Schools. This year also brought forth the institution of bus service to bring the grade school children down to the cafeteria and take them back. 544446 774.242 The faithful members of the School Patrol deserve all kinds of special recognition. No matter what the weather--rain, snow, ice, hot sun, cold winds, penetrating dampness--the girls in white belts will be seen regularly on their corners eager to perform their little-known, but im- portant, service to the school and to the community. Many parents are relieved knowing that their children are cared for while going to and from school. 60 Jr e'!J., J' JN 5x xx, X .QQ .bww ,u ,s . 1 -QC X i 'Q:v'f ' XY gx 5 4 X -5.5.5 5 NN 'DN x' ' -:P-H .
