The Tygers, under new head coach Harold Dean, placed another 5-5 season into the record books The Tygers opened the season with a shut out victory over Cleveland East Tech. They then fell to crosstown rivals, Madison 19-29, and Malabar 19-27, despite their comeback efforts The Tygers then dropped their first away game to Canton Glenn Oak by the score of 14-42. One week later, Royalty was in the air, and the Tygers gave Homecoming queen Kim Back a victory over Cleveland Collinwood 7-6. The Zanesville loss was one of coach Dean’s players’ most physical and mental losses to the team. This loss put the Tygers record at 2-4; they needed four more victories to better last season's record. Then only three. Losing to Football powerhouse Massilon 40-9 put them in a losing season 4-5, but by the foot of senior Jim Bishop, the Tygers beat Ashland 20-19 to repeat the 81 season. Tyger Awards went to Dennis Franklin, Jimo Adams award; Jim Bishop, Offensive back; Chris Elswick, Offensive line; Pete Webb, Defensive line; Brett Andrews, Defensive back; and Kevin Elkins, Coaches Award. 18
