They then fell to crosstown rivals, Madison 19-29, and Malabar 19-27, despite their comeback efforts The Tygers then dropped their first away game to Canton Glenn Oak by the score of 14-42. One week later, Royalty was in the air, and the Tygers gave Homecoming queen Kim Back a victory over Cleveland Collinwood 7-6. The Zanesville loss was one of coach Dean’s players’ most physical and mental losses to the team. This loss put the Tygers record at 2-4; they needed four more victories to better last season's record. Then only three. Losing to Football powerhouse Massilon 40-9 put them in a losing season 4-5, but by the foot of senior Jim Bishop, the Tygers beat Ashland 20-19 to repeat the 81 season. Delarcy ‘Muffin’ Black, who led the team in rebounds, assists and steals, was named first team All- District. Muffin’s 19.8 points per game was the highest in recent history. The Tyger reserve team was team champions at the Clear Fork Invitational, at Bellville, placing nine out of thirteen wrestlers. Six Tygers placed at our 22nd Annual J.C. Gorman Tournament. Out of the six, three earned championships: Bill Benjamin (98 Ib.), Gary Divelbiss (119), and Paul Darson (126). Gary was voted Most Valuable Performer at J.C. Gorman. Then Tygers placed four wrestlers in the finals of the MSH Sectionals. Mike Longood (98), Gary Divelbiss (119), Paul Darson (126), and Brett Andrews (145) all advanced to the Toledo Rogers Districts. At Toledo, Paul was the only Tyger to advance to the finals and therefore earn a berth in the OSU State Tournament. In Ohio State’s Saint John’s Arena, Darson finished fourth in the state in the 126 pound weight class. On January 8th and 9th the 22nd annual J.C. Gorman Wrestling Tournament was held at Mansfield Senior High in Pete Henry gym. Jackie Jones, former 1981 J.C. Gorman Queen, returned to an assembly held on Friday, Jan. 8th, to crown Krystal Owens, 1982 J.C. Gorman Queen. Miss Owens’ escort was Mr. Willie Crittenden. There were five returning letterwinners: Laura Parker, Becky Bauhs, Carla Norris, Jeanetta Lamb, and Gay Holmes. They were helped out by sophomores Julie Schroeder, Stephine Crawford, and Toi Hatch. The varsity squad was coached by John Miefert. Named as MVP at the sports banquet was Carla Norris. Carla also won awards for having the most rebounds, most assists, and highest free throw percentage. Jeanetta Lamb was awarded for the best field goal percentage. The losses that were handed to Tygers were close ones. One of the finest games was when they met cross town rival, Malabar. The Tygers beat the Falcons in overtime. Coach Neumann was pleased with the team, because they showed determination and pride in what they were doing. The MHS freshman basketball team finished their season, 6-8. Tyrone Buck, Ron Parr and Andre Feagin teamed up to ignite the freshman offensive effort most of this season. Tygers Crush Malabar for City Championship The Tygers dominated Malabar, as usual, 21-4. Previous years have seen victories of 35-7, 38-5, 27-9, and other similar scores, over the Falcons. This year’s team was composed of just twelve players. The Tygers saw only five varsity players return with three reserves coming up along with four rookies. Becky Bauhs had almost all the pitching cast upon her as the only experienced varsity pitcher. Luann Krichbaum and Mamie Ramsay, sophomores, came in relief of Becky as needed; when not, they played at third base and first base, respectively. On the receiving end of the pitches was, usually, junior catcher Sherry Smallstey. The keystone was handled by veterans Cathy Bishop, a junior second baseman, and senior Laura Parker, at shortstop. The outfield duties were handled by starters, junior Cynthia Ftzel in left, freshman Jody Pollman in center, and senior Margie Hriesik in right. Sophomores Ann Kracker and Raquel Bernat also played in the outfield. Freshman Susan Bottorf DH’ed for Jody and played in the outfield. Opposite page: Susan Bottorf ready for the pitch. Elswick pitched a rare no-hitter against Ontario. Elswick has played every position on the field except shortstop and, along with senior Mark Constance, played in every game. Senior Troy Conroy was the best pitcher on a mainly rookie pitching staff. Conroy, in his second year, led the team in complete games and had the lowest ERA on the team. Conroy, mostly because of constant hard luck defense, ended up 0-8. Sophomore Billy Stevens pitched his first game in years and did well. Sophomore Ted Mayo led the team in wins. Senior Jeff Gregory was the most improved. Jim Bishop was named by his teammates as Team Captain. This Page: Chris Elswick preparing to bat against Saint Peters. Instead of competing in different meets on different days, they participated together. The boys were coached by Fred Atwater; who had an impressive cast of freshmen and returning lettermen. Donnie and Ronnie Eatmon, along with Vernon Hairston and Earl Taylor, comprised the relay team. Ken Smith was a distance man, while Mike Middleton controlled field events. Rena Gibbs coached the girls team and will have much of her squad returning. All-State perfomers Angie Gardner and Brenda Barrett ran relays, hurdles, and sprints, and were joined by Carla Hairston and Patti Givand in relays. Jeanetta Lamb and Gay Holmes did field events, while Linda DeVine and Beth Staples ran distance medleys. 48 This page, top left: A Tyger trackster awaits the hand off. The team was coached by Mr. Jim Goode, who announced that this was his last year as tennis coach. 51 52 Drama Club Presents One Acts The Drama club presented its final production of the year with Spring Follies on April 1, 2, and 3. There were six one-act plays, five which were student directed, and one by William Asher. “The Jinx from Alabama” was directed by Mr. Asher. This one act play was about a girl from Alabama who is very superstitious and finds many bad omens surrounding her cousin’s wedding. “The Doctor in Spite of Himself’ was directed by Ken Sharp. In this play the “doctor” is forced into his profession through a betting of his vengeful life. “Let’s Get Out of Here’”’ was directed by Ed Weidle. This play was about two young people who believe running away from reality will change their life. “Mind Set” was directed by Steve Selby. It was a fantasy about a young girl’s mind and expressive symbolism through unusual actions. “Never Trust a Man’’ was directed by Debbi Anderson. Staged in the early 40’s, this one act touches on the humorous mistaken engagement. The last play, “When God Comes to Breakfast, You Don’t Burn the Toast,” was directed by Mike Marks. This one act deals with the unusually funny dilemma of what to have for breakfast when God comes over.
