Tygers Break Even in '77 This year’s Tyger football team came up with a satisfactory .500 season. Although the Tygers were shut out in three of their games, they made up for it by skunking two other teams. The loss to Malabar was a disappointment, but the Tygers came back to stomp Madison the following week. The highlight of the season was a whirlwind comeback toward the end of the season to win the last two games of the season. Outstanding players of the season were offensive lineman Mike Hoy for the second year in a row, Offensive back Jerry Powell, defensive lineman Dennis Ferguson, and defensive back Robert Williams. Jeff Divelbiss won the Jimo Adams Award, while the coaches’ award went to Dave Graber. Mike Hoy, Jerry Powell, and Jim Adams received the captains’ awards. Ray Bauhs made first team All Buckeye Conference. Named to second team were Powell, Twyman, Hoy, Williams, Adams, Ferguson, and Divelbiss. Opposite page Top right: Tygers gnaw the falcons. Despite this the team averaged 57 points per game, while their opponents averaged only 58.6 points per game. The season ended with a 7-11 record. Beating cross-town rivals, Malabar and Madison, was a highlight for the fans. Kevin Carter was named the most valuable player of the season. Other awards went to Jerry Powell, best foul shooter, Wayne Curry, most assists; Evie Feagin, most rebounds. Carter and Curry were honorary co- captains. The team was coached by Jim Goode and his assistant Ken Fairchild. Coach Ron Hetler reported that the J.V. team came up with a 5-11 record this season. LK 2 Ft oe Softball Proves Popular Sport This year forty-two girls came out for Tyger softball. Six returned from last year’s squad, and after three weeks of conditioning, the varsity team of fifteen was set. The most impressive aspect of the team was the hustle and determination; this was shown by the close scores in four of the six losses. The main disappointment was the weather; six games were rained out and couldn't be rescheduled because of more rain. Standouts this year were seniors Betty Hriesik, who did a great job at center and on second, Linda Simpson, on third and in left field, and Linda Wappner, who was called on to pitch, catch, play left, and cover third. Carline Curry produced the highest batting average of .603, while Cindy Beard and Becky Roessler handled most of the pitching duties. With only four graduating seniors this year next year’s Tygers look to be in contention come tournament time. Oppsite page Bottom: Row 1: S. Brandt, H. Dalton, M. Selmon, L. Simpson, C. On Thursday evening a bonfire was held at Arlin Field with Mr. Maul and his hot air balloon there to help psyche up the team. For the two assemblies on Friday morning the auditorium was transformed into a showcase of color, using floral arrangements and a huge mural to carry out the theme. Claire Smith and Kevin Meehan were selected from over fifty juniors to serve as Master and Mistress of Ceremonies for the occasion. 1976 Queen Tammy Taylor crowned Shelley, while Jim Adams, Jerry Powell, Jeff Divelbiss, and Mike Hoy presented her the game ball. The comedy revolves around a British ex-Army captain (Jeff Jones) who inherits five harem girls when he saves a shiek's life during the war. The girls arrive when Tony’s wife (Diane Bowers) is away, and he must think of a way to get rid of them without offending the shiek. The tension and comedy builds as Tony turns to his brother (Doug Wertz) for help and finds that Ken is only interested in taking advantage of the situation. Eventually with the help of his parents (Dennis Rock and Monica Holzwarth) Tony gets rid of the girls, makes up with his wife, and gets his household returned to normal. Jeff Jones, Monica Holzwarth, David Akers, Karen Billingsley, Dave Holbrook, Victor Davis, and Tammy Eichler had roles. ‘The Old Oak Encounter’’ concerns a nasty old man who gets mad at his neighbor's children for playing in his tree. When he calls them a name, the parents come to call. Curtis McFarland, David Borror, Robyn Kegley, Sue Billingsley, and Doug Wertz had parts. ‘‘Filiation’’ is about a family of the future who become concerned about the increased police patrol of their neighborhood and panic when they hear a knock on the door. Holding roles were Keith Coleman, Kim Yetzer, Tony Yetzer, and Dawn Bradrick. Dave Brown, Lori Clay, David Borror, Ed Richter, and Ron Marvicsin starred in ‘‘The Monkey’s Paw ’, a story about a family who receives a magical charm that can grant wishes. However, they aren't prepared for the way in which the wishes come true. 71 4 = ” « ra) AS A ¢ ‘f , Publications Staffs Record School Year ‘ur we ‘ } Chosen to head the 1978 Mee) dae ited | 2s Manhigan Staff were co-editors, = Tom Crotty and Dave Ott. The first student handbook in five years was compiled, printed and handed out to all students, and Superstars Day was once again added to the calendar after a lapse of a year. Officers were James Tucker, president; Rusty White, vice-president; Mike Hoy, treasurer; and Rosetta Garcia, secretary. Mr. Goode advised the group. National Honor Society, first under the advisorship of Mrs. Imhoff and then Mr. Pugh, was headed by President Monica Holzwarth, Vice-President Jeff Frontz, S ecretary Colette Smith, and Treasurer Denita Williams. The seniors and their advisors, Miss Papenhausen and Mr. Gross, started planning for Varsity Varieties right after school started. Before the mid- November production date, however, seniors were well into the Christmas orange sale. Planning class day, the prom, and commencement took most of the seniors’ time during second semester. Homecoming was the major project for the juniors and their advisors, Mrs. Kohutek and Mr. Lull. They held another dance, a slave sale, and sold candy sticks as major projects during the year. The sophomores got off toa good start when they elected officers in the Fall. Mrs. Lewis was asked to serve as advisor to the Class of 1980. Projects during the year included a T- shirt sale, a dance, a pizza sale that was quite successful and fun, and concluded with a class party in May. A flower filled pool and fountain erected on the outside balcony at the Lodge served as a focal point for the theme. Inside the tables were covered with candles and floral centerpieces in pastel shades. The dance floor was transformed by glittering silver columns and crepe paper streamers. Following a buffet dinner featuring roast beef and ham, seniors and their guests danced to the music of Walt Keppler Jr. until midnight. The punch fountain and the pool proved popular spots for cooling off during the evening. At 1:00 a.m. the party moved on to Richland Mall Cinema where prom goers could choose either ‘‘The Spy Who Loved Me” or ‘Murder by Death. ’ Bowling and pool at Park Lanes concluded the last social event of the year for seniors.
