Homework, pep rallies, and club projects are all parts of the Tyger. From year to year the Tyger changes as students advance toward graduation. On occasion the Tyger ' s home has been modernized and enlarged; this year the renovation of the shop and gym area began. As we read through the following pages, we are reliving our school life and activi¬ ties of the past year. This book, then, is the story of the Tyger ' s life for one year. The Life of • • 3 ... a TYger 4 During the past year, as in the previous years, the M. H. S. Tyger served as the focal point of our lives. The majority of our waking moments was spent within the con¬ fines of Senior High. Through the first part of our day we studied hard, but upon the sounding of the bell at 3:0 5 our interests and activities radiated in all directions. Some of us wer e interested in service, others in athletics, and some in cultural diversions. However, all were somehow related to school spirit--the spirit of the Tyger. By his academic excellence and his will¬ ing service , Mr. Charles Sauder exhibits the spirit which we all emulate. He is not only a fine teacher, but also a fine man. Mr. Sauder graduated in 1945 from Mans¬ field Senior High School, where he was chosen the outstanding senior boy in his class. While earning his A. B. from Wooster College, he was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Sauder began his teaching career at Johnny A pple se e d Junior High School in 1952, and after two years he transferred to Senior High. During a leave of absence in 1958, he received his Master ' s Degree from Ohio State. Throughout his career, Mr. Sauder has worked mainly in the field of mathematics. This year he taught Al¬ gebra I, trigonometry, and College Math, while managing the bookstore. Mr. Sauder also serves as trustee of the Apostolic Christian Church and as direc¬ tor of its Vesper Choir. To you, Mr. Sauder, we dedicate the 1965 Manhigan. Anne Marie Spiro, who lives in France, was brought to M.H.S. for a year by the First English Lutheran Church. She resides with the Richard Vaughn family, whose daughter, Toni, is also a senior. While at M.H.S., Anne Marie not only served on the set committees for both V. V. and the Senior Class Play but was a mem¬ ber of M Section and secretary of the French Club. Shirley Bledin, whose home is in Cape - town, South Africa, was brought to M. H.S. through the American Field Service. She is staying with the Dr. Robert Garber family. Like her American sister , Linda, she par¬ ticipated in V.V. and the Senior Class Play. Shirley was also a member of Junior Achieve¬ ment and cheered in the M M Section.. Nachiko Ide, who is receiving her high school education in America, will complete her last two years at M, H. S. Nachiko, a native of Japan, is staying with Mrs. Weston Cutter. Linda Garber was selected last June to attend Girls State held at Capital Univer¬ sity in Columbus. She was a Nationalist and served as an engrossing clerk in the Senate. Selected to attend Boys State, which was held at Ohio University in Athens, were Bud Huber, Terry Squire, Bob Brown, and Keith Eberhard t. These five representatives were chosen on the basis of grades, activities, and con¬ tribution to the school. They all partici¬ pated in miniature governments. At Boys State, Bob and Bud were Fed¬ eralists, while Terry and Keith were Nation¬ alists. Bud was one of seven who served as clerks in the House of Representatives. He re¬ ceived the award as the outstanding clerk of the House. Bud was also kept busy mak¬ ing posters for the candidates who ran for state offices from his party. Bob, who was defeated for Lieutenant Governor, was the Parliamentarian in the House. Keith was the municipal judge for his party, and Terry was a member of the House of Representa¬ tives. Varsity Varieties “ 65 ” Much of the success of Travels With Charley, which drew a standing-room crowd during its second performance must be at¬ tributed to the long hours spent by the direc¬ tors, producers, and class advisors, as well as the general enthusiasm of all those who took part. Jerry Burkhart, director, assisted by Diane Sqrow, devoted endless time to stage direction while Ted Fraker, producer, and his assistant, Ruth K 1 i n ge ns m i th , gave’ their energies to props, sets, programs, tickets and innumerable other necessities. As a sophomore, he was one among the many of his crowded classmates. Elected as class officers were President Bob Crit¬ tenden, Vice-President Ron Klein, Secre¬ tary Barb Wilging, and Treasurer Steph Bogner. The major class project was the sale of light bulbs. Soon all was over, and the year was highlighted by the sopho¬ more prom with a Parisian theme. Lack of classrooms was the cause of the Tyger parting with a third of his classmates, who became Malabar Falcons. Serving as junior class officers at Senior High were Ron Klein, president; Glenn Lambert, vice- president; Laurie Shiplet, secretary; and Resa Nichols, treasurer. With the end of football season came a lovely Homecoming event, Blue Serenity, with pretty Kathy Simon reigning as queen. Next, candy was.a successful junior class project, the profit going toward graduation expenses. All too soon came the junior prom, called The Year of the Tyger. Being a senior meant much to the Tyger, and he was busier than even before, work¬ ing endlessly on the outstanding production of Travels With Charlie, 1965 Varsity Varieties, and Charley ' s Aunt, the re¬ markable class play. This last school year was ended by Class Day, the Senior Prom, Baccalaureate, and the most important event-- Commencement. The Tyger donned his red or white cap and gown to receive his diploma. In his mind, those enjoyable years will linger forever. The Tyger spirit remains as he goes into the great world- -whet her it be to master an occupation or to fur¬ ther his education. Using their new flip-flop offense at Cuyahoga Falls, the Tygers showed con¬ siderable ability but lost in a hard-fought game 13-12. Harry Waldman, the first team defensive halfback, was injured and could not play for the rest of the season. Against Cleveland East the Bengals showed little offensive punch to suffer their second defeat 16-0. The Tygers received a tre¬ mendous blow in the third quarter of this game when Ron Parr broke his left leg. In the last of the non-conference games our arch rival Massillon triumphed 26-0 before a crowd of 9,500 at Arlin Field. Almost every offensive maneuver by the Tygers was stopped by the powerful Tiger defense before it could get under way. Senior High became the first Mansfield school to win a 1964 football game as they scored a two-point extra try after the touch¬ down to defeat Fremont 8-6. H.S. Under the direction of their capable officers and advisors, the students initiated the point system to honor the juniors who were active in class pro¬ jects. Upon earning a given number of points, the student was awarded a lapel pin. Their excellent homecoming, Portraits of Majesty, required many hours of hard work from all the students who participated. The class also acquired a bulletin board at the top of the cafeteria stairs in order to inform the juniors of class activities. Another of their projects involved sending get-well cards to class members who were in the hospital. The successful year was completed when, on the ninth of June, the Junior Prom was held in Pete Henry Gym¬ nasium. Junior Class Executive Committee on, Row, Mi.. The sophomores soon cast off the shackles o f u ppe r cl a ss me n 1 s chiding and became an active part of school life. They held their class election late in November, and the newly elected officers immediately initiated a program to promote enthusiasm within the class. All sophomores were invited to attend the sophomore executive committee meetings which were held every Tuesday morning. The class got off to a good start towards obtaining funds for its graduation when it held its first money making project, a dance, on February 13. A candy sale, held early in March, was also a great success. Enchanted Evening, which was just what its name indicated, was the theme of the sophomore prom. Juli Konves, Jane Beal, and Kathy Wiegand proofread each other ' s speeches shortly be¬ fore the junior class elections. ■ The seniors sometimes thought this was where all underclassmen belonged. New concepts in chemistry are learned through experimentation by Hanna Ickert and Carla Golder. 238 The Life of an Underclassman Tyger Band members waited nervously for performance time as they enjoyed the visiting band ' s show. The underclassmen of Senior High School led diversified lives, filled with activity and many rewarding experiences. Thinking about an upcoming performance with fear and anticipation, attempting to learn a speech, and developing new ideas in a class¬ room- -all these were part of the learning processes of an underclassman. Each junior and sophomore, no matter what his interests and capacities might have been, was a part of our student life, and M. H. S. certainly will produce some memory for each student to take with him when he leaves this institution of learning. The education of an underclassman is never completed. 239 MARCIA ANN ADAMS General V. V. The Year of Spirit Come on, you Tygers, fight! 264 ki N| i •itkist The learning process took many forms. By extreme concentration and intensive study, we were able to grasp difficult con¬ cepts. Discussion with other students and after-school conferences with our teachers clarified fine points. Always there were disappointments, but a part of our education was learning to admit defeat, accept the new and greater challenge, and then to persevere until the obstacle was conquered and the goal--worthy of the Tyger--was achieved. ! •i Tyger and Mansfield Senior High School are synonomous. Each of us students who have attended M.H. S., studied in its cl ass- rooms, relaxed at its dramatic productions, and enjoyed after - the - game dances has helped to sustain Senior High ' s prestige as one of Ohio ' s foremost high schools. Upon graduation we leave the Tyger ' s lair, but a portion of us is left behind, forever to remain a part of the Tyger. ri, l X i. a To Ourselves-The Manhigan Staff Randy Poling, faculty editor, was assisted by Sherry Schoonmaker. The work and worry of Editor-in-Chief John Hoeffler and Assistant Editor Bob Brown is never finished. Pausing from a busy schedule is the seniors section staff, Helen Bissman, editor, Randy Craig, and Lonnie Guegold. The underclassmen staff included Debbie Martz, Editor Dick Harbaugh, and Linda Cross. The sports staff, Editor Jerry Burkhart, Martin Campbell, and Danny Starnes, look over their pictures. 268 I Jj Mrs. McClellan, advisor, had the final word on all decisions. The features staff is Kathe Ott, editor, and Cheryl Horning. Typist Margaret Ingram was co nst a ntl y busy. Suzanne Russell picks up pointers on page design from Art Editor Susie Smith. 269 Pasting their club section plates are JoAnn Roth, Kathy VViegand, and Edi¬ tor Re sa Nichols. Advising his staff of Gail Games and Cathy Heiser, is Ted F raker, activities editor. In Retrospect You have just read the 1965 edition of the Manhigan. While this is only the perennial addition to the continuing story of MHS, we hope that you have found this book appealing because of its differ¬ ence; informality has been the key word on the Manhigan staff this year. We have tried to present an encompassing picture of this school year--its emotions, its activities, and its hard work. Our duty was to represent each student, and we have striven to fulfill our obligation. Many people have played a major role in the production of this book. Without their help there would be no Manhigan. To the faculty of MHS we express our appreciation for their cooperation when it became necessary for us to disrupt their classes. A special understanding is needed between teachers and the Manhigan staff, and this year we feel this understanding has contributed much to our book. To Mr. Glass go our thanks for his sage advice from our first consultations in August to our final deadline in April. Mr. Glass ' enthusiasm toward the Manhigan has always imbued the staff with the desire to excel. We owe our thanks to Mrs. Kennedy, our business advisor, who spearheaded our successful subscription sales, and the business staff for their skillful handling of the Manhigan ' s financial matters. To our staff, who worked long hours, never failing us, we extend our deepest gratitude. At times our good-natured chiding reached the point of sarcasm; for this we are sorry. We hope you realized that our slavedriving had only one purpose, the issue of a good yearbook. The book was uppermost in our minds as it was in yours. In a student endeavor such as this, the capability of the advisor determines to a great degree the success of the project. By this barometer our book is excellent. Thank you, Mrs. McClellan, for all the hours you have given us. We appreciate your willing help confidence in us, and an occasional admonishing word when the going got rough. The hours after school, the long Saturday workdays, and the much - appreciated doughnuts, will always remind us of what you have done for us. Again we ex¬ press our gratitude to you, Mrs. McClellan. To you the students of MHS, we extend our thanks for the cooperation you have given us throughout the year. We wish you luck in whatever you do and wherever you go. Always remember the Tyger. He will never forget you. 270
