Mansfield If Senior High r n j j r r _ _y 1964 MANHI AN WINDOWS are ever present in our lives. When we came to school as sophomores we looked through the windows with anticipa¬ tion of what our gears at M.H.S. would hold for us. When we departed for a summer or a lifetime, we looked out the windows and imagined our future. At the same moment we saw in the panes a reflection of the past gear. 6 When we arrived at school, sights and sounds revealed to us the activities of the coming day and the follow¬ ing week. We traveled to our classed in various moods --often intent in last minute cramming. Often we paused in our busy day to relieve our heavy-laden minds. 7 Our class participation and long hours of study increased the knowledge that we were constantly pursuing. Teachers and counselors were always willing to help us with our daily prob¬ lems and with the planning of our future. 8 Mixing school work and school activities made our years at M. H. S. exciting and unforgettable. From the wild enthu¬ siasm of a sports event to a tense moment in a play or in a variety show to the relaxed discussion in a club meeting, we were thankful for the diversion that these activities gave us. As we depart at the year’s end, we remember the friends with whom we shared our lives. OUR SCANDINAVIAN BROTHERS Gisle Schmidt Goran R adstrom This year MHS was honored to have two foreign students, Gisle Schmidt from Norway and Goran Radstrom from Sweden, both seniors. Gisle, brought to MHS through the American Field Service, spent his school year with the family of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Beilstein and their son Doug, who acted as his American brother. Gus, as he was known by some, was noted for his trumpet playing in the band and orchestra. He also acted in the Senior Class Play. Goran, or John as we knew him, came to MHS through International Christian Youth Council. He resided with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy and their son Larry., John was active in sports, especially track and basketball, and he performed in Varsity Varieties. Our foreign students played an important part in international understanding in both the school and community. Although their stay was short, friendships were formed which will remain in our mem¬ ories for many years to come. During the three years the girls have been together, they have succeeded in establishing Christian fellowship among themselves and in helping others. 7S FORMING HI IDEALS Here ' s a good idea! The purpose of the Junior Hi-Y was to promote the welfare of the community and to maintain a sportsmanlike conduct of their members. With Mr. Sullivan as the advisor, these boys elected Alan Fliegel as president; Ron Klein, vice president; John Masquelier, treasurer; Mike Jackson, secretary; and Tom Phelps, chaplain. These hoys all had high grades and were active in school affairs. Every week five of these Junior Rotarians went With Mr. Glass to the Mansfield Leland Hotel to eat lunch with the Rotary Club. The boys enjoyed interesting programs on subjects which pertained to our modern world. These luncheons permitted the boys to meet and talk with the leaders of our community and provided an opportunity for the Rotarians to learn of the activities in our school. As a senior looked back through the windows on the past, he saw his first day at Mans- field Senior High School. He was a nervous freshman then, and he attended only in the afternoons as the school was on half-day sessions. Football season came and went along with Homecoming, Varsity Varieties, and the Freshman Party. The class was ably led by Jim Berry, Matey Stern, Tecca Wilging and Penny Gerber with Miss Margie Kauf and Mr. William Hailey as advisors. Because half-day sessions ceased the following year, the sophomores found themselves still at the bottom of the heap age-wise. The officers changed as Dave Beard, Tom Downs, Suzanne Weikert, and Vicki Zartman took over the positions of leadership in the class, directing the major project--the sale of candy. The junior year dawned fair as Richard Ferguson joined Dave, Suzanne, and Vicki as vice president on the slate of officers. Camelot, the class ' s Homecoming, with Its out¬ standing decorations, was a wonderful success, as lovely Queen Vicki Zartman reigned over the Homecoming festivities. But the year went by all too quickly, and it was time for A Southern Vision, the Junior Prom. For many Juniors this was their last activity at MHS because the plans for a new high school had become a reality. Over one third of the class was to be the first graduating class of Malabar High School. For those who remained at MHS, there was the splendid production of Varsity Varieties, Tinkering With Time , the Mansfield Relays with Carolyn Davis reigning as Queen, and the humorous class play The Poor Nut. Soon all was over-the enchmting night of the prom, Bacca¬ laureate, ’and then Commencement. As our senior turned his thoughts through the windows of the future, he saw himself in further education and future jobs--a whole new world, an exciting new life. (fc ' boZ A John Fitzgerald Kennedy May 29, 1917--Nove mber 22, 1963 35th President of the United States WITH RESPECT This year our country suffered a great loss in the death of its leader, a young and vibrant man. A dismal state of shock and apathy fell over the be¬ reaved nation and the entire world as all peoples joined hearts in sympathy. Our words cannot express the greatness of this man, who not only served his country well, but also gave his life for it. His famous words will be quoted many times as a guide for Americans, both young and old: M Ask not what your country can do for you--Ask what you can do for your country. There is still significance for our own generation in this solemn dedication by Henry Wadsworth L ongf e llo w: Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union , strong and great! Humanity With all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, Is hanging breathless on thy fate! IN RECOGNITION Throughout the year we worked to put together a book which would hold memories for each student in the school. We tried to represent, in one way or another, each activity from the first day in Senior High for the sophomores to the time of graduation for the seniors. Looking back, as through windows, we can see the past year and looking ahead we can dream of the future and all we want it to hold for us. We hope we have recalled some special moment or event for you to remember. Much credit goes to the following for giving their professional help in producing this book: Armen Studios Buell-Kraft Studio Smucker ' s House of Portraits Ohio School Pictures General Litho Plate The Richland Printing Inc.
