Text from Pages 1 - 286 of the 1963 volume:

pWttsfisto Junior ffejjk IMwl's 1963 PanMgatt Httftl Busk f 4 I am a student at Mansfield Senior High School. This building is my academic fortress for the majority of my high school years, where 1 partake of the knowledge, the opportunities, the despair, and the joys which arc found behind its doors. My day dawns far earlier than my arrival at school indicates. A hurried awakening, a quick breakfast, a glance at a book, a dash for the door--all these comprise the moments of my dawn. They arc but a prelude to my day at M. H. S. My day is filled with searching. Many are the answers I have to find. Not all of them will I find in books. My education conics from many experiences--a heated discussion at lunch, a hesitant question in class, a new-found satisfaction in music. Each subject has so much to offer. Yet my feelings fluctuate from the excitement of learning to the discipline of studying. With the ringing of the final bell I burst free into the world outside. A walk home with a friend bridges the distance from my life in school to my activities beyond. 6 Wherever my afternoons take me, they are most often filled with some phase of school. Whether it is pounding on a V. V. set, working toward further education at an outside Job, or Just diligently hitting the books at the library, I feel the presence of Mansfield Senior High. X Wr. Demonstrating that education is a continual process, he allots time in his busy schedule for advanced study. Receiving degrees from The Ohio State University, Mr. Glass studied extensively at The University of New Mexico and continues to study at and teach for The Ohio State University. For his staff, for our faculty, and for the community Mr. Class gives of his time and of his talents. Under his able supervision, Senior High stays in step with changing trends in education. MR. SHERMAN I shall explain the procedure, instructs Mr. Sherman as he sets into precise motion one of his many plans for coordinating the functions of the school. Exacting, efficient, dedicated, and disciplined describe Senior High's Assistant Principal. Understanding and humor arc equal ingredients in Mr. Sherman's personality. Having been graduated from Bliss College, he did additional work at Kent State University. Mr. Sherman has earned and enjoys the respect of the community. Ursula, who lives in Germany, was brought to Mansfield for a year by the First English Lutheran Church and is now living with the W. R. McCullough's. The National A. F. S. chapter chose Bob to go to Lyons, France for the summer. He was our first A. F. S. representative to benefit from this world-wide organization. Happy hopefuls for a bon voyage. SO Ursula and her American sister, Miriam. What's the answer to the fourth one? A. F. S. Now what do wc do? American Field Service, a young organization in our school, has been successful in giving students a chance to know and understand students of other lands. The projects of the club for the last year have been the sale of ribbon candy, a dance, a bake sale, and a surprise day. 25$! But they're straw. V. I. P's of A. F. S. No, it's mine. 51 DAWN OF THE SCHOOL YEAR The official sound that started the school year. The empty halls awaited the surge of returning students. The recently readied halls awaited the arrival of students. The clock was set to sound the first bell, initiating the establishment of a carefully regulated schedule. For many, the first day was a repeated experience; for some it was the dawn of a high school career. Renewing of old friendships and the forming of new ones were important parts of the beginning of the school year. COUNCIL HELD OPEN HOUSE Teachers and parents compared notes on pupils' progress. This year at Open House parents were able to meet the teachers that their sons and daughters worked with and to become familiar with the classrooms in which they worked. Parents were not held to an exacting time schedule during classroom visitation. The Student Council sponsored the event and acted as guides, hosts, and attendance officers. Parents were welcomed at the door. 53 Guides helped parents to become familiar with students' schedules. COLLEGE, HERE WE COME ! Time for enthusiastic discussions and appreciated refresliments. College Night, sponsored by National Honor Society, offered area students a glimpse into the activities and academics of many colleges and universities. Representatives from nearly fifty different colleges presented talks including information about college fees, social life, sports events, and courses of study. This event supplied an evening of gathering information and exchanging ideas. Concise advice. Camera causes a moment ol interruption. 54 LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Career Night opens with a briefing period. Hard work ahead. Choosing a vocation becomes more important with each passing year in high school, and, as in past years, Career Night awarded an opportunity to look at future careers. A wide selection of vocations was represented by business and professional people in the Mansfield area. These people informed attending area students and their parents of the needed preparation, and benefits and obstacles of their respective careers. Career information captures attentions and challenges initiative. 55 Jim Goode Each year representatives from our school arc sent to Boy's State. While there they helped elect mock city and state officials. The purpose of this annual conference is to teach school leaders more about the inner workings of our government. A Kim Murray BOYS’ STATE GIRLS’ Steve Hattman STATE Dave Vercckc Girl's State met in Columbus for its yearly summer conference. Girls gathered from all over the state to participate in a practical application in government. 56 Vicki Woodman Top projects were rewarded with Superior ratings. Alan Tootikan with his zoology project. This year's Science Fair was once more a display of the outstanding abilities of the science students and teachers at M. H. S. The projects came in various sizes, shapes, colors, and categories and showed that a great deal of extra effort had been put forth by the participants in this endeavor. Head basketball coach, Jim Burkett, produced an excellent Tyger team, a team that performed superbly during its first year in the tough Buckeye Conference. Coach Burkett's hometown is Toledo, Ohio. He attended De Vilbiss High School and was graduated from Bowling Green State University. Throughout high school and college he won numerous recognition awards in athletics. From 19S4 to 1959 Mr. Burkett coached baseball and basketball at Thompson High School in Seneca County. Twice his team went to their Sectional Tournament and once to their District Tournament. In 1959 Coach Burkett came to Mansfield Senior High as assistant coach to Mr. Vera Hoffman. I've enjoyed all my coaching assignments at Mansfield, commented Mr. Burkett. He went on to say, The most important parts of coaching arc earning the respect of the players and winning the confidence and cooperation of the faculty and my fellow coaches. His ambition for the team was expressed in this way: During the years Mr. Hoffman was here a fine basketball winning tradition was built up, and 1 shall try to carry on that fine tradition. After an opening game loss at Fremont, the Tygers scored two straight Buckeye Conference victories. Then Marion Harding dealt the varsity cagers their first home loss of the season. The Tygers bounced back to win six straight contests. Highlights of this victory streak were triumphs over a tough Sandusky team and our arch-rival Ashland. A zone defense bottled up fourth-ranked Warren Harding for three quarters, but in the fourth period the Panthers overcame a nine point deficit to defeat the Tygers 54-50. 94 Rich Poling Senior Forward John Wright Junior Forward Woody Jones Senior Forward Jim Carson Senior Center Jim Goode Senior Forward Rick Baker Senior Center Goode's good on the rebound Following a one point trimming by Elyria, the Bengals conquered once-beaten Marion Harding by five points. A week later, Cuyahoga Falls edged the Tygers by three points in a hotly-contested battle. The first tournament game loss to Marion Harding was a typical example of Tygcr games this year, because they demonstrated come-from-behind ability. The Tygers fell behind early in the game and finally knotted the score at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth period the lead changed hands several times, but the Proxies emerged the victors, 55-52. The leading Tyger grapplcrs were George Potter, Bob Russell, Dave Hoovlcr, and Roy Jackson. One of the highlights of the season was a record-breaking 41-0 victory over Sandusky. George Potter (18-2) captured the Buckeye Conference wrestling crown in the 165 pound class, while Ron Parr, who showed vast improvement this year, gained the Buckeye Conference championship in the 175 pound class. Bob Russell (16-4), Tyger heavyweight, lost the Conference championship in his class by one point in an overtime match. At the district wrestling meet, tnc Tygers finished sixth with George Potter finishing second in the 165 pound weight class. 98 SWIMMING First Row: B. Barbonc, Kcyser, D. The Tygcrs remembered last year's one point loss to Findlay and they were out to redeem themselves. They accomplished their goal by winning the last event with a record-breaking time. Four of the top swimmers of the year were Sam Lerro (captain), Dave Beard, Dave Preuninger, and Ron Steiner. The relay team consisted of Beard, Lerro, Prosser, and Reiner. The Tygers finished off their fine season by taking three firsts in the district swim meet. In the state meet Sam Lerro finished sixth in the fiftyyard freestyle for the Tygcrs. During the regular season individual records were set by Sam Lerro in the fifty yard freestyle and Dave Beard in the two hundred yard freestyle. Tygcr takes a dive. Certainly the largest and liveliest organization at M. H. S. was the school's grrr-eat Pep Club, which presented pre-game pep assemblies and furnished pep buses throughout the year. Helping to stimulate school spirit, the group obtained the Tyger Head through which our basketball team was presented at home games, painted many effective signs and banners, and sponsored a poster contest. The club was led by Bill Mitchell, President; Fred Duy, Vice-President; Candy Richcson, Secretary; and Sue Riestcr, Treasurer; and was advised by Mrs. Laura Evilsizor. 110 Presenting the Mansfield Tygcrs. . . Each Monday afternoon the girls' gym was filled with energetic G. A. A. members who participated in various competitive sports and well-organized projects throughout the year. Volleyball, basketball, and bowling tournaments helped to stimulate interest in team sports, develop leadership qualities and promote sportsmanship. Fudge sales provided the club with necessary funds. Vicki Woodman, President; Pat Ness, Vice-President; Judy Rush, Secretary; and Diane Hildebrand, Treasurer served as the group's officers. Mrs. Nclla Plough was the club's advisor. GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION 111 SENIORS SPONSOR DINNER This year the Senior Hi-Y continued on its way to success. The group spent both time and money on this worthwhile endeavour. This project gave the girls a chance to serve the community. The Senior Y-Teens presented a style show which was held at the Y. This event proved to be both socially and financially successful. The group also sold candy and fruit cakes to raise funds for its much-anticipated Easter trip to New York City. The trip was among the group's memorable experiences. Heading the club in its last year were Lou Farbcr, President; Barb Brollier, Vice-President; Barb Crumrine, Secretary; Jean Pryor, Corresponding Secretary; and Vicki Woodman, Treasurer. A poster is worth 1000 words. 113 DIVIDING DOUBLES SERVICE Handle with care. This year, due to the greater interest in the Hi-Y movement, it was necessary for the junior group to split into two organizations. This dividing did not affect the purpose of the clubs. Both factions created, maintained, and extended high standards of Christian character throughout the home, school, and community. The officers presiding over the two clubs were Presidents, Sandy Turner and Tom Downs; Vice-Presidents, Mac Flinn and Jeff Smalley; Secretaries, John Endcrlc and Denny Snyder; Treasurers, Jerry Hoffer and Joe Prats; and Chaplains, Jim Berry and Paul Cindrich. The clubs were advised by Mr. Ray Ccrrcll and Mr. Joe Cindrich. 114 GIRLS WRITE SISTER CITY Working to promote better understanding between girls, communities, and different races and religions, the members of Junior Y-Teens wrote a letter to Mansfield's Sister City of Dar Es Salaam, explaining the functions and purpose of their organization. The group planned many service projects, including the preparation of a Christmas basket which was presented to a needy family. Sue Bcnzin, the club's President, was assisted by Carol Ripper, Vice-President; Gail Schadck, Secretary; and Linda Frush, Treasurer. Mrs. Norma Domcr served as tiie group's advisor. OUR STRIVING UNDERCLASSMEN or SENIORS SPOOF SUCCESSORS She was here when she should have been there, but she was there last period and found that she shouldn't have been there at all. Since she was there when she should have been here, where should she be now? The senior Knight, armed for battle, looked sympathetically upon his new-found following. The hopeful maidens looked up in honest admiration at their Knight in shining armor. The polished senior scoffed at the junior; the confident junior jeered at the sophomores; the perplexed sophomores threw up their hands in humble but temporary surrender. The accomplished athlete assured the kneeling aspirant that even he might—with work, discipline, sacrifice, dedication, and pcrscvcrcnce—achieve some small measure of recognition. 251 MELVIN GEAN ABERTS Technical Student Council Ex. 4 Vocational Club 3, 4 JAMES HARRY ACKLEY, JR. How swiftly the time has passed, whizzed by in an endless procession of tests and term papers! Now my time is taken with plans— plans for the summer and plans for the future. Still, after I am gone, there arc those who remain—after every day, after every year. 276 School is over. For some of us it is Just the end of another year—for others, the beginning of a life away from M. H. S. But even after I close my last book and end my last sleepless night of study, Mansfield Senior High will remain in my memories. Not all of my questions have been answered, but I feel that finally I'm beginning to know a bit about why. IN APPRECIATION The Manhigan has gone to press. We arc not ashamed to admit that we arc glad it is over. Yet there is not one of us who would hesitate to do it again. We have tried to present the story of a school and of the students in it. We have tried to show that from dawn to dusk, one is involved in some type of school activity. We have succeeded only if every student can sec himself represented somewhere within the book's pages. To the photographic studios, Armen, Bucll-Kraft and Smucker, go our deepest thanks. Your patience and your fine work were indeed appreciated. Also, thanks to Ohio School Pictures and the Mansfield News-Journal for their contributions. For the book itself we would like to thank the Richland Printing Company for printing, Lash Litho Plate Company and General Lithoplate for plates, and the Forest Hill Company for binding. Mr. Schoen of the S. K. Smith Company who made endless trips to consult us on our cover also deserves our gratitude. Thank you, teachers of Senior High, for the many students that you permitted out of class for our pictures. Mr. Glass, we appreciate your consideration of our numerous requests and your understanding of our problems. Mr. Saudcr, thank you for your cheerful advice, your frugal planning and your efficient Business Staff. To the staff, who worked diligently and faithfully, goes well deserved applause. We thank you for putting up with our yelling, our deadlines and our schedule. You must know there is nothing personal; we had only one thing on our minds. The book was first. Lastly, thank you, Mr. Hailey for your enthusiasm and your assistance. You were always around when a solution or an encouraging word was needed, and the endless time you put in working with us from dawn past dusk cannot be measured in thanks. We are grateful for the experience, the challenge and the fulfillment. We shall never forget those with whom we have worked, and we are certain that our successors will be capable ones. 278
