MANJFIELD EX LIBRIS 2 MANHIGAN MANSFIELD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MANSFIELD, OHIO FOREWORD The 1958 edition of the Manhigan has been published in the hope that it will present the student body of M.H.S. with an accurate and permanent account of this year's activities. Although many phases of our school life are too intangible to be captured in silhouettes of black and white, perhaps in some small way we can convey to you the events which will want to be remembered. It is ivith this thought in mind that we proudly present the 1958 Manhigan. Wc must leave all this behind us now. As Freshmen we were a divided class of rivals. Half of us were Applesced ••Pioneers and the other half were Simpson Bulldogs. Leading the way for Appleseed were President Bob Eickhoff, Vi ce - President Anne Lusignan, Secretary Joe Wharton and Treasurer Jim Balcolm. Simpson's president, Joe Schivinski was assisted by Pete Bissman, Jo Thompson and Carol Ward. When it came time for the annual football game between the two schools, the Pioneers surprised everyone by breaking the winning streak of the Bulldogs with a very ex citing victory. Forgetting our rivalry, we became the united class of '58 in one mutual school of Mansfield Senior High. When the election for Sophomore officers was tabulated, wc found that Joe Schivinski was again our president. Serving with him were Anne Lusignan as vice-president, Sally Hout as secretary and Soni Davis as treasurer. Mrs. Gates, Miss Spigglc, Mr. Ncucrman and Mr. Glass became our much appreciated and helpful advisors. When wc advanced to Juniors, our top man became Joe Wharton, and his helpers were Anne Lusignan, Bev Porter and Soni Davis. The time had then come to crown a Homecoming Queen. Sally Hout reigned with her attendants; Linda Brown, Dencase Dansby, Anne Lusignan and Peg Weir in a Cinderella's Paradise. And then, begore wc had time to realize it, wc were Seniors Heading the class were President Joe Wharton, Vice-President Anne Lusignan, Secretary Bev Porter and Trc asurer Soni Davis. Heading the editing of the Hyphoncrian was Judy Schmahl and forthc Manhigan were Nancy Budin and Bill Amsbaugh. The activities consisted of football and basketball games, Christmas Baskets, Varsity Varieties Cosmic Capers , the class play Dear Ruth , and projects to raise money for Graduation activities at the completion of our Senior Year. Sally Hour was chosen Queen of the 19S8 Mansfield Relays and her attendants were Soni Davis, Anne Lusignan, Monya Mosberg, and Bev .Porter. We found that Graduation was very quickly creeping up on us and that Class Day, May 26, was already upon us. Next came our Prom, May 29, and finally we gathered at Arlin Field on June 6, to bid our final farewell to M. H. S. and to receive our long awaited diplomas which would take us on to our own personal goals in life. Tyger Co-captain, Jim Balcom, touched off Mansfield's only T. D. when he intercepted a Cleveland East pass on his own 42 yard marker. M. H. S. capitalized on his opportunity with Don Ragsdale moving the ball to the Tyger 48. Then Mansfield's high-stepping Bob Ray broke loose and left the Blue Bombers eating his dust, running 52 yards to paydirt. However, the Tygcrs lost the extra point try and this proved to be the winning margin for Cleveland East. Mansfield's second try for victory was more successful as they rolled to a 27 to 0 triumph over Youngstown North. Our first T. D. was scored by Don Ragsdale after a 38 yard march by the Tygers. Joe Bender scored the remaining 3 touchdowns burning the turf for 85 yards. The first of Bender's T. D. 's was scored as a result of Youngstown fumble on their own 38. Bender went over from the 2. Another Youngstown bobble opened the way for M. H. $. 's tally. After 14 plays Bender cracked over for the score. Mansfield scored its last 2 T. D.s within 3 minutes of each other. The last T. D. was rung up after a 61 yard drive. Joe Bender bursting «ver from the 2 for his third T. D. Although Bender scored 3 T. D.s, Bob Ray was the 202 M. H. S. big gun with 182 yards in 17 carries, JOE BENDER DAVE TANNER BOB MATHEWS Senior Fullback Senior End Senior Halfback JOHN HUNTER RAY BREINICH BOB RAY Senior Guard Senior Halfback Senior Halfback The Tygcrs exhibited a tremendous offense in wiping out Akron Kenmorc, 46-6, at Arlin Field. Four Tygers accounted for the seven touchdowns of Bob McNca's charges. Don Ragsdale and Bob Ray had a field day as they ran wild over and around the weak Kcnmore line. Mansfield had only five first downs; whenever they got the ball, a T. D. was usually scored on the first paly. The Tygcrs rolled up 402 yards rushing and 88 yards via air. Ray and Ragsdale covered 276 of these yards on five runs. Mansfield's final score came on a 91 yard scoring drive that was sustained by two fifteen yard penalties. This victory gave the Bengals a 2-1 record. As of this game the Tygcrs PAT kickers had connected on seven of twelve for a reasonable 5896. The Warren Harding Panthers belted over for 2touchdowns in the final quarter to dull a tremendous effort made by the underdog Tygcrs. There were 10,S00fans on hand to sec the Tygers fall under the Panthers, 20-7. A Tygcr fumble on their own 18yard line set up Warren's first T. D. A pass on the first play from scrimmage connected to put Warren ahead 7-0. M.H.S. came right back with an 87 yard drive in 6plays to tic the score. Balcolm made lOon a keeper, Ray went for 11 and Ragsdale and Balcolm added 8 more. Then came the highlight of the drive when Tygcr, Bob Ray, lit out on a SSyard jaunt past the Warren defenders to paydirt to tie up the ballgamc. The Warren offence was then ignited by determination as they came back with 2 T.D. 's in the final period to break up the deadlock and add another victory to its already excellent record. The Tygers suffered a greater loss when their top sprinter had his ankle broken to put him in hock for the remainder of the season. 204 JOE SCHIVINSKI Senior End GORDON SMITH Senior Quarterback HAROLD ROTH Junior Guard DICK DUFFY Junior End DON RAGSDALE Junior Halfback FRED LEHR Junior Tackle Mansfield's gay feelings were brought to an end last n.ght before 5,5(X)home coming fans. East Tech's Scarabs downed the flu ridden Tygers 19-14. The Tygers were handed their 3rd. defeat in 5 games. A punt attempt which failed touched off the Tygers first T. D. Tech fumbled a pass from center and lost the ball on the 25. Balcolm gained 4 yards on 3 carries and then caught a pass from Smith to put the Tygers in front 7-0. At the half the Tygers led 7-6. Early in the 3rd. quarter East Tech went into the lead with a 63 yard dash. At the end of the 3rd. quarter the Tygers started a come-back. Balcolm got a T. D. to put M.H.S. back in the game 14-12. Three 5 yard penalties cost the Tygers the game. They added enough yardage to East to enable them to win the game. The Tygers extended their victory margin over the Sandusky Blue Streaks to 14 wins and 10 losses with a 14-6 victory. The Tygers scored the first time they got possession of the ball. Ragsdale and Matthews went to the 8 yard line. Then Ragsdale went the 8 yards to score. The Blue Streaks lone tally was accounted for when a Tyger punt was blocked on the 30. On a pass play the Sandusky boys got 6 points. Their kick for the 7thwas blocked. Tanner fell on the kickoff and it took the Tygers 13plays to go the distance to the goal. Ragsdale was the mainstay for the Tyger backfield, with all 4 backfield men alternating carries to add the 6 points for the win to the Tyger score. 206 HERCULES PAYTON CARY McKINLEY BOB HAYDEN Junior End junior Guard Junior Tackle TERRY SCHMAHL Junior Guard ALLEN SAMS CARL PROTO Junior Quarterback Junior End 8,000 loyal football fans turned out to sec Mansfield suffer its seventh defeat at the hands of Canton McKinley, It seemed as though the game would turn out to be a thriller until the last 55 seconds. During these 5S seconds Canton's Bulldogs managed to push over the goal line twice to give the Tygers a powerful drubbing, 40-20. M. H. S. scored first in the game when Bob Hayden blockcda McKinley punt for a Tyger tally. After the second kickoff, Bob Matthews made 13 on a double reverse and Don Ragsdale loped the rest of the way, 68 yards, for the score. This made the score 20-1 4 in favor of Canton at the half. After Canton scored again in the third period, Jim Balcolm pulled off an electrifying punt return 57 yards, aided by some beautiful downfield blocking, to put m. H. S. back in the game. Pass interceptions seemed to figure a lot in the games outcome, with Canton interrupting two Tyger passes for Touchdowns to end the game, 40-20. The Mansfield Tygers met the last opponents of their current football season with a team that showed spark in the last quarter to whip Springfield 14-9. Mansfield lugged the pigskin over fof the first tally in the first quarter. The drive for the T. D. was topped off when Balcolm plunged over from the three. Springfield came back with a 7 pointer to deadlock the ballgame. Springfield threw the Tygers fora big loss, and racked up a two pointer for their effort. The score remained 9-7 until late in the fourth quarter. It looked as though the Tyger would go down in defeat in their last game. Then Don Ragsdale pulled off an electrifying punt return with some beautiful down-field blocking, 85 yards to paydirt. This clenched the final game for M.H.S. by the score of 14-9. 208 BOB HOWARD GEORGE COLE SAM JOHNSON Junior Halfback Junior Tackle Junior Center DICK CONRAD Sophomore Tackle JACK SCOTT DICK LETIZIA Junior Center Junior End A driving rain which had fallen without let up for 16 hours had left the Lakewood stadium a quagmire. Lakewood proved to be the best mud sloppers in the game. A chain of blocked punts, fumbles, and an inte rcepte d lateral all played their part in the defeat of the Tygers. M. H. S. knocked at the door only once. It was during the third period, but their attempt was crushed when a Ranger player intercepted a Balcolm pass in the end zone. Only two goal-line stands by the Tygers saved the game from being a total rout. Mansfield's final hope of escaping one of its infrequent losing seasons was buried in the Lakewood quagmire as they bowed 25-0 to the Rangers. This is the only time since 1943 that the Bengals have suffered a losing season, and it was the first time in 25 games that Tyger gridders have failed to register a score. 210 ATTENDANTS CAGEY COURTMEN ROW 1: (Left to right) Isch, Kline, Smith, Hallabrin, Harris, Kiner ROW 2: (Left to right) Hunter, Payton, Herrick, Ragsdale, Shadek, Lehr ROW 3: Coach Hoffman MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS 74 58 63 82 68 49 89 86 76 64 74 68 61 51 S8 50 63 Lorain 75 Findlay 63 Toledo Central 52 Columbus South 62 Columbus East 70 Elyria 73 Ashland 92 Gallon 68 Lima 64 Sandusky 40 Massilon 54 Akron South 61 Canton McKinley 66 Marion 53 Ashland 52 Springfield 63 Cyhoga Falls 57 214 ROW ROW 1: (Left to right) Altaffcr, Bolcsky, Pfiicnmaycr, Bohus, Hawkins 2: (Left to right) Hartman, Hayden, Lundberg, Monk, Huisch ROW 3: (Left to right) Butler, Hout, Rabal, Ev; Lorain Toledo Central Columbus South Columbus East Elyria A shland G al ion Lima Sandusky Massillon A kron South Marion A shland Springfield Cuyahoga Falls Evans, Osw alt MHS MHS I 2 MHS MHS MHS 3 3 MHS I 2 MHS •1 i MHS 3 0 MHS 4 3 MHS 50 MHS 51 MHS MHS 4 7 MHS 3 6 MHS WAV A1. 215 Mansfield Senior High's Tygers is, this year, a team we should be well proud of. Their record might not have shown it, but they played a great game of basketball. Two and three point losses seemed to be M. H. S. 's sad story all year. Seven of their nine losses were by 5 points of less. Their tournament record was much more impressive to the eye. When they entered the sectional tournament they were not expected to get any farther than Upper Sandusky. However, they beat Upper Sandusky and went on to beat the Ashland Arrows, 65 -63 and bacame sectional champs by beating Marion 63-50. DAVE LUNDBERG VERN HOFFMAN At the Toledo Rcgionals, Mansfield's first opponent was Lima whom they beat by a score of 67-63. They came back the next night to face a team with a 24-0 record, and once again the three point loss took its toll with Columbus North on top of the Tygers 56 to 53. When the Tygers went on to the district they were predicted to be overshadowed by the Crestline Bulldogs.
