Behind their skillfully performed exhibitions between the halves of the football games arc many hours of practice. Besides their marching ability, the Mansfield band is noted for its rendition of good music well played. This musical ability is also revealed during their season as a concert band. 13: Because of the increased numbers of musicians, the Sophmore Band was formed and placed under the direction of Mr. Warner Sontag. Throughout the football season, they displayed both the r musical and marching ability. The sophomore majorettes are Barbara Balyeat, Susan Frank, Becky Hardy, Carol Keefer, Nancy Winbiglcr, and Cynthia Craig. 134 Seated Left to Right: Barrie MacNail, Carol VanAusdale, Judy Hartman, Jan Eberly, Elaine Eller Standing Left to Right: Connie Williams, Dave Bourns, Pat Burkhart, Cynthia Caston, John Burkhart, John Catlett, Ruth Wixon. Several of the ways in which they fulfilled this objective are by visiting hospital patients, by aiding the bloodmobile, by calling on shut-ins, and by helping com-nunity groups. Pouring potatoes into one of many baskets is Pat Driscoll, general chairman, while Bob Coen, delivery chairman, and Marilyn Powell, one of the floor charimen, put in some canned goods. The one school function that has the support of the entire school is the Christmas Basket Project. In this, the students, teachers, friends, and parents are all working toward an ultimate goal—a lobby filled with baskets overflowing with food for needy families of Mansfield. On the day before Christmas vacation, room 217 is the scene of a rush assembly line. Here the food is sorted and systematically placed in the brightly decorated baskets. One by one these tokens of good will are carried to the lobby and placed around the Christmas tree, before being delivered the same evening. The most worthy cause has been the bearer of countless tangible Christmas 142 greetings. Darlene Heston Captain This year the M section has put on a great show, creating pep and enthusiasm to spur our team to victory. The group, consisting of ninety-one girls, dressed in red and white, has made money by selling pencils. This money enabled them to travel to out-of-town games. Included in these travels was their trip to Marion for the tournament where, with their support, the Tygers won the District Title. A part of the Pep Club, the M section is under the supervision of Mrs. Vem Hoffman. In the summer of 1956, these organizations sponsored twelve boys and one girl from Mansfield Senior High. By actually being able to participate in the functions of a democratic government, these political trainees acquired a more thorough understanding of its fundamentals. Setting up a mock government was not an easy job, but required much campaigning and organizing. After election, each delegate's time was amply filled with his various individual governmental duties.
