Art Editor...... Business Advisor...... Paul Park Henrietta Stiles Carol Linton Vivian Gustin Phyllis Paulson Maribel Hawk Mr. George Sherman Advisor Mr. Harold Loesch Foreword Through the open Doors of M.H.S. there is carried on a multitude of activity. The staff is opening these doors and with pride in presenting the 1954 Manhigan. It is written for, about, and by the students. We have here recorded events of the past year as we have watched them, lived them, and will remember them. ★ Dedication To HERMAN D. BISHOP To Herman D. Bishop, advisor and counselor to each and every student and graduate,do we, the graduating class of 1954, dedicate our yearbook. We dedicate it to him for his unceasing aid to youth throughout his year as an instructor and for his desire to see that the best for the students was done, even though it sometimes meant his taking a set-back. Rather than letting those times of discouragement get the best of him, he worked that much harder. Mr. Bishop was born in the year 1895 at Ringgold, Ohio. He attended Ohio University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree after which he taught Social and Economic Problems at Wilkesville, Ohio, until he entered the army in 1917. Top Sgt. Bishop served 14 months in a Signal Corps Battalion in France. After the armistice, owing to his scholastic record and his commanding officer he was allowed to take a post-graduate course at the University of Nancy in Nancy, France. Mr. Bishop taught for a year at Fredericktown, Ohio, and then went to McConnelsville, Ohio, where he was principal from 1920 to 1924. In the fall of 1924 he came to M.H.S. to teach Social and Economic Problems; two years later he was appointed assistant principal. In 1936 Mr. Bishop received his Masters degree from Ohio State University. Mr. Bishop was the first president of the Mastersingers, is a member of the Masons, and is president of the Board of Klienesingers. His never-ending aid and assistance to us has made him respected and admired by all. 7 SUPERINTENDENT MR. W. L. MILLER A smoothly run administration in an asset to any school system. For the past nineteen years Mr. W. L. Miller has headed the Mansfield schools. Ho calmly handles all the many situations that corse to his desk. BOARD OF EDUCATION StM B mm s: the !!$ • - or Office of the Principal 145 West Park Blvd. MANSFIELD, OHIO f uJL JtfrnJr June 1, 1954 In the time to come, this Manhigan will take on increasing significance as it recaptures experiences and refreshens memories of the years you have spent at Mansfield Senior High School. The vast amount of hard work, the spirit of co-operation, the fun, all ingredients in its preparation, typify, in a broader sense, the recollections which I hope you will have of your school life. If the same spirit of wholesomeness you have evidenced this year continues to enrich your lives, I feel very hopeful about your future happiness and future accomplishments. May we further work together toward the continued betterment of our school and our community . ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. GEORGE SHERMAN Taking over the reins as Assistant principal this year 13 Oeorge Sherr.an. we all know how hard he works. Quietly carrying out his duties with assurance and ef-fIc lency. The girl in the photogrnph that is marked accordingly is my choice for Manhigan Queen. Hoping that no one is offended, I remain Sincerely yours, tonq Mi Ma iUi j,an 2ueen Alice Beatty I Reading from left to right the football coaches are A1 Maccloll, Ton Pierson, Head Coach Bill Peterson, and Earl Bruce. These men, In addition to their thorough Knowledge of football, were fine sources of moral support to the team. The story of the Mansfield football season may be told very briefly, chumps the first half, champs the second. However, the hot second half usually more than made up ror the cold first half, as witness the six wins and a tie out of the ten games played. The caliber of play was such that although no one Player was named for All-Ohio, no less than six were mentioned on the various lists. The Tygers were captained this year by big jack Eliot, 200-pound senior. Although the job of being a captain sometime.-, fells into an honorary business. Jack took the Job seriously and was a real Inspirational loader when the going got rough. 138 Dave Armstrong Bill Auer Ed Avery Fred Bair Jon Bonner Jim Elmas Les Danals Wilmer Fowler Bill Cook Steve Fisher Clarence Bridgeman Bob Earnest 139 Dick Frederic! Henkel also passed to Dick Yoakam for a TD and scored himself ona quarter Back keep play jerry Lorentz booted all five extra points. Brilliant defensive play In the line, highlighted by tho work of Bernle Yoha at end. held East to 80 yards rushing. The well-conditioned Tygers rallied in the last 17 minutes of playing time to defeat Akron South 16 to 7. penalties and fumbles cost the Tygers heavily in the first half as they lost the ball several times In scoring territory. However, they bounced back in the second half with a solid defense and a sparkling offense. Touchdowns were scored by Ld Avery and Jim Thompson on short plungss after sustained drives. Leading 21 to 6 going into the final quarter, the second ranked Warren Harding Panthers had to extend themselves to the limit to eke out a one point victory over the fighting Tygers. The Tyger3 scored twice In that frantic rinale, once on a draw play with Jim Thompson carrying and the other on a 30 yard pass rrc® Henkel to Mack. Arter the third Mansfield TD the Panthers consumed almost six minutes with eleven plays, and that was the ball game. Mansfield met with several bad breaks in their attempt to upset Warren. Several times penalties came at costly times, Ron Sherrer had a punt blocked, and several of Henkel's passes skittered off the fingers of receivers. Although playing below par, the Tygers still had enough In reserve to whip Cincinnati Elder 27 to'7. Ed Avery ran back a kick-off 8 yards. Mack had a 70 yard punt return and caught a TD pass, and Fowloi had the fourth Td. Tom Todd pulled in three wayward Elder passes, anc in the extra point department, jerry Lorentz had three Tor four. Oi debit side Mansfield fumbled five times, recovering none. Elder scored In the first quarter on a pass which, caught the Mansfield secondary nap Ping. One of the season's most exciting games was that between the Tygers ana the Hangers of Lakewood, In which the Tygers came out on top by a score of 26 to 19. Both teams were held to two touchdowns during the first three quarters but let loose In the final 11 minutes with scoring rallies. Lakewood’s hopes for a stalemate were shattered In the last 18 seconds when pudge Henkel connected with end Kermlt Wilson for the final touchdown. In the fourth quarter Mansfield also scored on a 75 yard run by Ed Avery and a 16 yard run by Willie Mack. Jim Thompson scored In the third quarter on a plunge. 142 Hopes for a Mansfield victory had run high among the more han 4,000 fans who had Journeyed to Massillon to see what was o be the game of the week, instead they saw a fighting teas et trounced 41 to 7. Massillon's offensive attack completely ominatod the play as three Massillon men each scored twice. ?aln and again the Massillon ball-carrier was far past the ne of scrimmage before tho befuddled Mansfield team knew here the ball was. Mansfield's only score came In the fourth uarter after a 21 yard pass from Henkel to Avery on a 2 yard lunge by Thompson, jerry Lorentz added the extra point. Roaring back from the Massillon massacre, the Tyger3 easily disposed of Sandusky. Jim Thompson and wlllle Mack teamed up for 269 yards with Thompson scoring three times on runs of 40, 7, and 49 yards, jerry Lorentz booted four straight extra points for the surging Tygers. In the last rew minutes Coach Bill Peterson used almost the entire squad as be tried to keep the contest from becoming a rout. 8,000 football fans saw a finely-tuned Mansfield football earn overpower Canton McKinley In the final meeting of the two schools or Mansfield's sixth win In eight starts this season. Four different Tyger players scored touchdowns In the one-sided ame. Quarterback Pudge Henkel engineered all of the touchdowns as be ompleted five of eight passes, two for touchdowns to end Clayton Smith ad back Dick Toakam. Speedy Ed Avery scored on a 15 yard slant and llllle Mack crossed Into paydirt of a 22 yard run. This homecoming game with Toledo Waite, although officially a tic, will always be considered a Mansfield victory. With about five seconds left In a scoreless first half, Henkel passed to Whltey Smith deep in the corner of the end zone. The referee ruled that smith was out-or-bounds when he caught the ball and that therefore the pass was incomplete. A large section of Mansfield rooters disagreed heartily with him. In the second half the Tygers rolled 66 yards with wlllle Mack going into pay dirt, jerry Lorentz, Tyger extra point ace. split the uprights. Later In the game Waite drove 64 yard3 for a score and converted the extra point. The game ended 7-7. The Tygers, displaying their finest form of the season, came up with win number seven against the Springfield wildcats. Wlllle Mack led the Tyger scoring with three touchdowns, one on an 82 yard Jaunt. Jim Thompson and Dick Toakam counted a touchdown apiece. The one Springfield touchdown came in the last quarter, on a run by back Ronald Burton. The conversion was good. 143 cJlamecosvUntj, 2ueen Queen Carol Linton Queen Carol and her lovely court represented our school .at the Annual Homecoming game. When the members or the class of '54 weer divided In number between the provlncse, they were two rival governments, Intent upon excelling over each other In bas -Kotball, football, and tgack. Oliver pudge HcnKel ws3 president or Applesced; Paul Park leader of the Slmpsonltes. Paul, pudge, and the people of their provinces looked forward with eagerness to the most Important bout of rivalry, the annual football game. As was the tradition, they had the ruling classes select a queen and court of royalty. That evening at Arlln stadium Nancy Koff reigned for the Simpson orange and white while Majorle Vlld presided over Appleseed's maroon and gold. . The game went off as scheduled; APPle-seed defeated Simpson. Then basketball season came along and Simpson cane up on top and defeated Appleseed. Then, instead of becoming more hostile the Inhabitants or the two prlvlnces fraternized more and more, conditions were 30 friendly that the two groups decided to morge and form one large country under one leader. That leader was elected very soon after the two countries combined. In fact, sooner than any other In the histories of the other combined provinces of Mansrield Senior High. Our country became known as the MHS class of '54. The people elected jack Eliot as president. Ke was assisted by Dick yoaka who served as vice-president, Judy Maxwell as secretary, and by Phil Norman who took charge or the treasury. The country also chose a woman of great wisdom to be lt3 prime minister, Mrs. Virginia Irahoff. Because of the successful merging or two countries, a traditional native dance was given a celebrats. Dogpatch Dance, as It was called, was given In April of the first year or the merger. boon after our country had begun Its second year of growth, an election was held to give the poople the chance to express their choice of a leader. We re-elected Jack Eliot as president and Dick Yoakan ax vice-president . After having waged a successful campaign, Baibara 6chacfer was chosen as secretary and Nancy Hoff was placed In charge of all revenue received In the country. in that year we felt the need of a ruling power to reign at a show of bravery on the athletic field. Uo nominated several lovely girls and rinally selected as our queen, judle Bruce. She was attended by Judy Maxwell, Delores Milligan, Margie Vlld, and Lleanor •Toots Bcholler. CLASS OF 1954 Business was beginning In our little country. The profit motive led us to printing a directory of all the names of all our people and holding.an Important dance called the '■Sweetheart Dance. It was given on the fourteenth of February. Also, the best cooks provided us with some delicious baked goods for a sale to the people of our city. Then came the year which meant gradua -tlon to full-fledged citizenship In the country. We began by re-electing Jack Eliot as president. Serving with him were Charles Morton, vice-president, Barbara Schaefer, sectetary, and Paula Weir, treasuer. Under the direction or these leaders our country grew in wealth, and we Initiated sev -eral more business Institutions In the land . One of the most prominent was our Christmas card and stationary business. However,we could always combine business with pleasure, in February we produced Varsity Varieties, a show with vitality and talent which proved to be a groat success In the outlying teiritorl ?3. Later, the month of March found us presenting •Goodbye, My Fancy, a Broadway comedy, for the public on the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth as our class play. And of course we sliall always remember the dances after the games and the thrill of attending the first basketball contest In the Pete Henry Gym. All these events were reported by the ■Hyphonerlan, • our school newspaper which deserves a considerable amount of merit, it wa3 headed by Mary Boyd and Bill Schettler. we also had a yearbook, the •Manhlgan,• that recorded faces as well as facts, and Linda Wilson and judle Bruce directed Its publishing. In March the Hypho carried the story of the election of Linda Wilson as queen of the track meets held when several other countries came together to compete with our runners. Her court consisted of Judy Maxwell, Alice Beatty, judle Bruce, and Toots Scholler. in April students read In the Hypho of the traditional Easter sunrise service sponsored by we seniors. The most Important event or the year was our graduation. in order to celebrate, w« attended a formal dinner and dance on the fourth of June. Commencement was the sixth of June, and on the tenth of June we graduated, garbed In navy and white robes, at Arlln Stadium. It was the first time this stadium had been used for graduation. For many of us graduation to full citl-zon3hlp was a sign for settling completely and helping our communities by getting .lobs and raising faralllos. For others It meant a push forward toward new frontiers. In looking back, we can say that a3 a class we enjoyed three happy, successful years of high school. In looking ahead, the futuro is bright and waiting to be discovered. And we are ablo to step Into this future, confident of a richer life ahead becauso of the experiences gained from our life at MHS.
