Here they combined their efforts to attain their goal. Striving earnestly toward the day that they would be appointed Senior executives, after which, they would receive their certlfl- cates of merit, and retire from the Senior High Building. First, however, they must prove their value to the company. To help them with this they em- ployed Mrs. Vern Hoffman as their Business Ad- visor. To assist the able advisor a Board of Directors were elected by the employees. Pres- Ident, Art Lomaxg V1ce'pres1dent, Dick Fry: Sec- retary, Pat Quinlan: Treasurer, Thelma Poorman. To show their originality they sponsored a basketball album consisting of pictures of the players and squads. This was a profitable sales approach. The sophomores also sponsored a dance and collected union dues to raise a fund for their Senior year. with the advancing of the great business firm to another floor, the following were ap- pointed with important executive positions: Art Lomax, President: Dick Fry, Vice-presldentg Pat Quinlan, Secretary: and Carol Schad, Treasurer. As every respectable business firm needs to keep up its well being, money making projects were sponsored such as: the selling of tiger and box stationary, basketball albums, and spon- soring many dances after basketball and football games. Since the firm had suceeded very well that year, a decision was made to elect a queen and her attendents in honor of the promising ass- ociation. Gretchen Snyder reigned as queen with her attendants, Kathleen Bolin, Pat Quinlan, Marlene Remy, and Connie Paulson. They wore white formals at the coronatlon ceremony and were dressed ln red and white suits, traditional to Senior High s colors, at the football game where we played an out-of-town incorporation, Sprlngflele. All too soon arriving at their final year ln the Education Building, the seniors elected Art Lomax as president for the third consecu- tive year. Working with him were Jerry Howell, Vlcepresuwntz Terry Saprano,Secretary3 and Carol Schad, Treasurer. With Don Beddard, Pat White, and Connie Paulson as Co-editors and Jim Shambaugh as Bus- iness Manager, the Hypho started its thirty- fourtn year at M.H.S. with Marianne Davison as Editor-in-chief, Courtney Bourns as Co-editor, and Betsy Kirtley as Business Manager, the Manhlgan was put out for the twenty-sixth year. The fourth annual Hvarslty Varletels,H un- der the direction of Faith Stein and Mary Pear- son, was presented on the nights of February 11 and 12. The senior class play, vTurn Back the C1ock,Hwas performed on the nights of March 19 and 20. Some of the outstanding accomplishments in this final year were the dances after football and basketball games, the carolers, the greeting caros sold during the Christmas season, and the annual Easter Sunrise Service, held at the First Presbyterian Church. In the spring a track queen was elected. The queen was Marlene Remy with Gretchen Snyder, Phyllis McFarland, Marcis Hines, and Betty Lou Wendland as her court. Some seniors with impressive honors be- stowed upon them were: Jim Schafer, chosen one of Oh1o's two Most Valuable Players in basket-- ball: Dlck Guy, Eddie Mack, and Ben Carbetta, each given all-ohio honors ln football, and Betsy Klrtley, who received a free trip to Washington, D.C. by winning the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. The forthcoming graduation was celebrated on May 29 with a Class Day and an all-night prom. On June 5, 554 young men and women marched onto the beautiful plaza on top of the Educa- tion Building. Looking down at the little crea- tures entering the ground floor, the Class of '55 were reminded of their work and pleasure in obtaining education. Then the hellocopters, Business movlle and College Express, arrived and the class of '53 departed for higher skyscra- pers of achievement. RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED Gwen KIIOX CHAIRMAN Art Hergatt Bob wlxon Joan Horsman Adrienne Lymper

IXII Art Lomax Jerry Howell Terry Saprano Carol Schad PRESIDENT VICE'PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER CLASS HISDCRY Mrs. Mildred Hoffman CLASS ADVISOR As always between two great business firms there is high spirits and keen competition. The two firms decided to test their strength against each other in sports. All over the Mansfield Territory peoply came to see the Appleseed-S1mp- son game. The advertising department of both firms were well aware that a pretty face sells any product, so from both offices queens and atten- dents were elected to cheer the public on and to raise the morals of the two teams. By popular vote, Gretchen Snyder was elected queen at Simp- son, Inc., and Kathleen Bolin, queen at Apple- seed, Inc. The great day dawn-gray, cloudy, and -rain ing so hard as to fill up the great Arlln Stad- iu enough to have a swimming meet. The queens, goreously arrayed in their own fine colors, drove around in their respective convertmobiles and waved to the thousands of cheering spectators. Despite the cheering throngs, the Simpson Bulldogs were drowned by the Appleseeds officers 13-7. and their good luck even left them when basketball season rolled around. Unfortunately Simpson lost again 33-51. That year was glowing victory era for the Appleseed Bldg. and a bitter loss for Simpson. Simpson, however, Kept up its propaganda paper under the co-direction of editor-in-chief, Art Lomax, and Art Hergatt, business manager. while Appleseed, not to be undone, okayed Mary Pearson, editor, and Jim Shambaugh, business manager, to write up the latest rag sheet to compete with S1mpson's glorious accounts of the merits of their offices. Of course, every enterprising young bus- iness needs competant leader to raise the bus- 1ness's accounts and bonds. The head ones who rose in the ranks of Simpson were Delbert Wright President: Art Lomax and Dave Letlzla, Co-v1ce- president: Norma Beal, Secretary: Peggy Mattox and Gayle Henderson, Co-treasurer. The leaders at Appleseed were Eddie Vild, President: Jerry Howell, Vice-presldentg Bruce Bushnell, Trea- surerg Thelma PO0Fman, Secretary. In the year 1951, 252 sophomore employees from the Johnny Appleseed Inc., and 298 employ- ees from the John Simpson Inc., were promoted to the Home Office, Mansfield Senior High.
