Here in the fall of 1949 the two junior highs joined together to form the sophomore class. Neil Roller was elected to head the class, and he was assisted by Lowell Hess as Vice-President; Janice Smith as secretary; and Harlan Burns as treasurer. Miss Eva McCurdy, class advisor, got the '52 ers off to a good start by aiding them with their Circus Dance, which was held in the spring. In September of 1950, these people advanced another mile in education. They were now Juniors. Elections were held and Neil Roller was again elected to the office of President. The ballots also put into office: Lowell Hess, Vice-President; Nancy Ward, secretary; and Harlan Burns, treasurer. During the football season the Junior Class sponsored the Home-Coming assembly and dance. When basketball season rolled around, they sponsored several after game dances. As a project to gain more money for their graduation, the class began selling pep shirts on the front of which were tyger emblems. In anticipation of the senior year the class ring was determined and other senior projects were discussed and planned. 58 JUNIORS ROW ONE—Abraham, Judith; Ackerman, Cynthia; Ackorman, Ronald; Adkinson, Lincoln; Alexander, Mark. The first 12 weeks were spent in being oriented to the new challenge at Senior High. Early in 1951 the class held an election of officers to direct them through the sophomore year. The officers under the guidance of Mrs. Mildred Hoffman, class advisor, sponsored the first basketball album in Senior High. The album consisted of pictures of the players, and squads. The months of rehearsal made possible the snappy half-time shows which the band presented during the football games. In addition to the games, the band marched for various civic parades and helped to make all the pep rallies spirited affairs. The band this year was under the direction of Ted Tatgenhorst who came to Mansfield from Bexley, Ohio to replace J. Merton Holcombe. 80 MARGIE VOLZ, second lieutenant; JOHN DAMRON, first lieutenant; BOB HEMPFIELD, captain. MANAGERS— Bob Rettig A1 Snyder Sam Yarger Barb Miller MR. T and BOB. TYGERETTES The M. H. S. These girls were chosen from a large group of candidates after intensive try-outs. 81 Concert Band The Concert Band was organized at the end of the football season to provide band members with a chance to play more difficult and advanced music. Spirit and enthusiasm for chairs in the different sections was made very keen through try-outs and challenges during Monday and Thursday morning rehearsals. In addition to their annual spring concert, the Concert Band gave several other concerts for different organizations in the community. I String Ensemble The String Ensemble, a new group in the instrumental music department, was organized to provide a small ensemble which civic groups could use for entertainment on their programs. 82 To the STAGE CREW • • • • STAGE CREW—Bon Gray, Duano Mclntiro, Jim Shambaugh, Dick Widders. • . . Varsity Varieties On February 26th, before a packed house, Varsity Varieties of 1951 presented itself as one of the top theatrical shows and outstanding Senior Class achievements of the school year. The show was carried along magnificently by the emceeing of Jay Stooge Herbert. As was the case last year, the senior class sponsored V. V. About a month after the beginning of school, committees began working on the show. It was truthfully said no one performance could be picked as the outstanding one. The show was well sprinkled with experienced talent such as the rhythmic duo, Creators and Gentile, Diana Hoffman, the Barbershop quartet, Herbert, and last, but one of the best, Diana Hale. Adding spice to the show were the newcomers such as the crowd pleasing Dawkin's Brothers, with their comedy mind reading, and that bright spot of the show, the Charleston, not forgetting Tom Ward who was magnificent with the accordian. I'm sure everyone will remember Dancing in the Dark, the masterpiece of the show, as will they Barbara Scott and the Swan, Stacey and Baker, the hillbillies, Bob Conte and Pas-sionata, King and Williams and their tap routine, that blues girl, Donna Grace, and the Varsity Bouncers. But wait we've forgotten somebody, Hart and Blust, as if anybody could forget them, the two piano team of whom even Fred Waring would be proud. As we look back over everything, we see some additional things were added to this year's show, the souvenir program, and the Varsity Varieties Song, words by Paul W. Endriss, and music by Don Hart. All in all in it was tops in entertainment and the Manhigan lifts its hat to Varsity Varieties of 1951. 83 HATS OFF TO THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT WHO PROVE THAT . . . EDITOR-Jack Peirce CO-EDITOR— Bud Sorenson ADVISOR— Mr. Loesch . . OURSELVES (IF WE MAY) BUSINESS MANAGER— Jack Welsh ADVISOR— Mr. Sherman Manhigan The deadlines must be met. These were the words of Jack Peirce, editor of the 1951 Manhigan. Not long after school started, members of the year book staff were given their assignments for the 1951 issue. Each one began his designated work for the year. Nancy Cizek was set to work immediately typing the necessary articles. Bob Hempfield, boys' sports editor, and JoAnne Peppard, girls' sports editor, began plotting their pages in order to fit in all the pictures of the various organizations. We should definitely tip our hats to the hardworking business staff. Headed by Jack Welsh, these staff members are responsible for the ads and funds of the Manhigan. Jack can be heard telling his assistants, John Fox and Millard Pryor, to get those ads in or else. During football season assistant editor, Bud Sorenson, takes over Jack Peirce's duties. He could be heard explaining to feature editor, Fred Pryor, that he should start planning his pages. Just a glance at some of the pages of the Manhigan will show the work of the art editor, Chloe Snyder. While a peep at the senior section will make any senior proud of the work of Senior editor, JoAnne Bruce. The underclassmen, also, have done their share of the work, under the guidance of Mr. Loesch. All in all Mansfield Senior High School can doff its hat to the Manhigan and the Manhigan Staff of 1951. AT WORK SENIOR EDITORS 90 Manhigan Staff EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ...................... The students of this class are taught the fundamentals of good salesmanship in the classes which they attend in the morning. In the afternoon, these fundamentals of salesmanship are applied while students work directly with the retailers. The class members have participated in various activities throughout the year. The annual dance, the Co-Op Hop, was held January 5. The entire class attended the regional convention in Columbus on November 9, and two delegates, Bessie Vangeloff and loAnn McNew, represented the class at the state convention held in Columbus March 31, and April 1. The social events of the yedr were climaxed by the employer-employee banquet held at the Richland Recreation on April 26. To finance the year's activities the class has sold football programs and various other items in addition to collecting dues from each of the class members. 94 Mn xAA . . . TO ALL OUR CLUBS, LARGE AND SMALL Senior Hi-Y The boys of the Senior Hi-Y have centered their plans on making the most of their last year in high school. They elected as their president, John Damron; as Vice President, Jim Endriss. To keep the money affairs straight they elected Jack Welsh, treasurer; and to fill the office of secretary, Bud Dent. Among some of the activities are hayrides, talks on dating, debates, and community projects. Junior Hi-Y Every Monday evening at 7:00 a group of energetic Junior boys meet at the Y. M. C. A. These are the members of the active Junior Hi-Y. Their main object has been to secure funds for a trip to be taken in their Senior year. The organization has sponsored several hay-rides, and its officers are: Eldon Lawn, president; and Ray Gerrell, treasurer, served as induction team for all Hi-Y's in the immediate Mansfield area. Sophomore Hi-Y Quintres or Sophomore Hi-Y club, have visited several industries and also are sending representatives to National Hi-Y Conference and camp. The officers are Courtney Bourns, President; Art Lomax, Vice President; Ben Gray, Secretary; and Bob Wixon, Treasurer. Mr. Bishop is the advisor of the club. 96 JUNIOR HI-Y SOPHOMORE HI-Y 97 Y-TEENS Tho Y-Toon, an organization of the Y. W. C. One of the outstanding events and one that all tho girls look forward to is the spring formal. year was a Xmas party for the Children at the Homo. This group, headed by Gracia Dorr, meets tho same night as the seniors. Though thoy are the youngest, the sophomore Y-Teen has done their job as well as the oldor group. This group meets every Wednesday afternoon. Their projects for the year included making spool dolls for tho nursery and candy for the old peoples' home. And on certain nights they scheduled special attractions like: the Sweet Heart Swing, the Valentine Dance, Square dancing, and spot light performances. These and many others highlighted this year's Hy-Fun Club. Hi-Y Council The Hi-Y Council under the leadership of Eldon Lown helps co-ordinate the activities of the three clubs. The officers from all the clubs belong to the council and work together with Eldon to make the clubs more successful. 100 Science Club In any of the varied meetings of the Science Club held during the past year, you would see forty to fifty students combining the learning of new knowledge of science and nature with companionship and fun. This group, headed by Phip Casto, its president, with Mrs. Harris and Mr. Vanderbilt advisors, has not only sponsored parties and a pep assembly but has held monthly demonstrations. These include electroplating, chemical magic, enameling, and other varied sciences. 101 Library Staff The Library Staff, under the supervision of Miss Culbertson, aids in checking books in and out and helps to secure the necessary reading material for students. Attendance Office The girls in the attendance office assist Miss Danback in checking absences of students. They also run errands, file cards, and write passes for students. Christmas Basket Committee Merry Christmas is the sincere wish that is packed into oach basket along with all kinds of food, toys, and clothing. During this holiday season, the students contribute brightly wrapped foods to their homo room baskets. Under the capable direction of Mrs. V hiting, this committee puts on the finishing touches and directs the distribution of this welcome project to Mansfield's needy families. Boys' State Our delegation to the 1950 Buckeye Boys' State was probably the most successful group ever sont from M. H. S. From this group of eight, five were elected to high state offices. lack Welsh and John Fighter were chosen Supreme court justices, Ralph Sorenson, Attorney General, Don Hart, State Treasurer, and Phil Casio, Secretary of State. Phil was also chosen the most outstanding state official, the highest honor that can be bestowed on any ono person attending Boys' State. Phil also represented Boys' State at a visit to the 1950 Girls' State. Mansfield was truly the best represented city at the 1950 edition of Buckoyo Boys’ State. 103 Visual Education Under the capable direction of Mr. Elder, the boys of the Visual Education Club show moving pictures which are not only educational but also add variety to class room work. These boys, although little known, do a great job of helping the teachers of M. H. S. make the subjects interesting. S. O. P. c. The S. O. P. C. organization, which stands for Society of Prospective Collegians, meets every first Tuesday of every month. Different speakers are asked to come to the meetings and discuss certain colleges. But that narrow margin doesn't toll the story as the inexperienced Tygers unfurled a devastating ground attack and had 3 times as many first downs. The scoring for Mansfiold was woll scattered as 5 different Tygers scored points. 107 ESKER JORDAN DARRELL EWERS PHILEMON LINDSAY DAVE GUY Mansfield Takes Cleveland East After a slow start the Tygers took advantage of the breaks, with a touchdown in ©ach of the last 3 quarters to win. Playing on a muddy field, both sides experienced an attack of fumbil-itis. Throe times Mansfield fumbled within East's 10 yard line. Mansfiold completed its first pass of the season— a 10 yard pass from Mathews to Davo Guy. John Auer and Esker Iordan scored the other and Stauffer converted for the extra point. Mansfield rolled up 3 yards to every 1 for East. COACHES: Harold Raether. BUI Peterson HEAD COACHES: Augie Momingstar. Mike Bylene GEORGE DAWKINS 108 JIM DAWKINS DICK KENT JOHNNY TODD JOHN FOWLER The football managers were part of the backbone of the football team. They worked as hard on the side lines and at practice as the team on the field. They were as much on the team as a player, and when a touchdown was made the football managers felt they helped to make the touchdown. It wasn't an easy job, and they had to abide by the training rules just like the team. They were never known to shirk their job in the slightest. The boys are Senior Manager Phil Casto, Paul Kindinger, John Robbins, Don Schumaker. Alliance Overpowers Mansfield Zoom! Tho Alliance aviaiors flew away with Mansfield's proud 10 game winning streak. They scored two touchdowns even before the fans got to their seats. Mansfield's lono score camo lato in the game on a Carbetta to Todd pass. The powerful Mansfield running attack was held to 57 yards. The Aviators were just too powerful for tho inexperienced Tygers as thoy outgained them 5 to 1. This was the first loss of the OSC since it was started. GENE FIDLER GENE MONASTRA 109 There wouldn't be much if a football team without the equipment. The two men whom everybody knows as Sarge and Dick are practically indis-pensible. Dick Underwood, left, and Bob Knofflock, right, eat, sleep, and live with the team. They are always around when you need them for a piece of equipment or advice. JOHNNY AUER JIM WELKER BOBBY MATHEWS JOHNNY WILSON Warren Takes Mansfield 19-6 On its first road game of tho year Mansfield tasted defeat at the hands of a big Warren Harding Panther team. The Tygers could never get started against the gigantic lino, so thoy took to the air lanes, but this wasn't much more successful as the Tygers completed 3 out of 23 passes. However, a beautiful 45 yard pass from Carbotta to Joe Lee gave Mansfield its only touchdown of the game. Ill BEN CARBETTA MANSFIELD MAULS MARION 27-7 Hats off to tho Tygors for ono of their host gamos of tho season. The Bongals woro really clicking against Marion in their fifth game of tho season. Jim Dawkins took tho spotlight for tho Tygers making a total of 18 points. With John Todd out, and Johnny Auer setting the paco on tho ground, tho Tygors rolled to victory. Big Esker Jordan plowed over center for the other TD. Bob Stauffer, a husky junior guard, bootod throe points from placomont. TYGERS DEFEAT FINDLAY The Mansfield Tygers wrapped up its homo soason at Arlin field by defeating the high-ranking Findlay Trojans, 21 to 7. bcforo 9,000 homecoming fans. Only four of the 18 passes thrown by three Tyger backs were complotod but two of thorn wont for touchdowns. Bonny Carbetta pitched 53 yards to Joe Loo for the first half score and Don Pesano tossed a 43 yardor to Lee for the final tally. Lofty Johnny Auer picked up the other touchdown on a 15 yard jaunt around end. Bob Stauffer, husky junior guard, bootod all throe of tho Mansfield oxtra points. Findlay had been ranked as Ohio's 14th team prior to the contest which was played in intermittont rain. MUTE STARS FOR CANTON Stocky Lou Mariano's 75-yard touchdown trek oarly in the first quarter stampeded the Canton McKinley Bulldogs to a 19 to 0 triumph over the Mansfield Tyger footballers. Displaying none of the scoring power they had shown in other 1950 conflicts, the Sonior High Tygors failed to dent tho goal line for the first time sinco the final game of 1947 season when they bowed to Martins Forry, 12 to 0. Only in the first half did tho Bongals show any ability to gain ground and then a fumblo stopped the only thrust, after reaching the 31-yard lino. That was the deepest Mansflold penetration. Norm Yargor MASSILLON RIPS MANSFIELD 56-6 It seemed all the breaks were bad for tho Tygor. At the half Mansfield trailed only 21 to 6, and was still very much in the game. Early in the second half, things wont sour. Johnny Auer, a 170 pound ball of fire, mado a boau-tiful straight-away run for 94 yards, but was called back because of offsides. Coach Mather praisod Lindsday who he said was a constant throat in the Massillon backfield. John Todd was the best of the Mansfield backs with 33 yards. 112 JON TRUAX BILL ZIEGLER STEVE HENKEL Bengals Lose to Toledo Playing In a driving snow the Toledo Waite Indians pounded the Mansfield Tygers with 26 first half points to break the Tygor spirits and keep them from scoring in the first half. However the Mansfield team playod an entirely different game the second half by holding the Waite team scoreless and scoring 7 points themselves. The Tygers began several drives but were stalled each time until midway in the fourth quarter. Davo Guy recovered a fumblo on the seven and on the noxt play went into the ond zone to take a touchdown pass from Quarterback Benny Carbetta. Bob Stauffer converted the extra point and the final scoro was Tolodo, 26 and Mansfield, 7. BOB STAUFFER Fights Mar Game, As Tygers Lose 38 to 7 In the final game of the year players from Mansfield Senior high and Spring-field Public mixed football and fist-cuffs before 7,500 shivering fans. Springfield won the scheduled football game by a 38 to 7 score but lost out on the impromptu slugging matches which dotted the gridiron at odd moments. Eight players — five from Springfield and three from Mansfield — were banished for unsportsmanlike conduct. Springfield scored two touchdowns in every quarter oxcopt tho third. Mansfield's lone counter came on the final play of tho first half as lohnny Auer southpawed a pass to End Dave Guy in the end zone. 113 WILLARD WHISLER Homecoming Attendants 114 Miss Betty Hudec Miss Barbara Yeager Miss Patricia Daugherty Miss Judy Bolin Homecoming Queen Miss Shirley Yoakum Chosen by a vote of the student body, Queen Shirley represented our school at the Annual Homecoming game with a dignity and charm that will make alumni and students remember her as a fitting example of the ideal queen. Shirley was crowned by Sandra Stutz, retiring queen, amid the beauty of her court the morning preceding the game. The coronation assembly, bearing the theme, 'Dream Girl', was sponsored by the Junior Class. 115 BASKETBALL Everyone knows the man at the right if you've seen any of the basketball games. He is a well known figure to all at Senior High. We have seen him quite disturbed when the game is drawing to a close and the Tygers are a few points behind. We have also seen him at his height of glory, riding on the shoulders of his victorious team after the Ashland game. Our own Coach Vern Hoffman. He gave everything he had to his team and I know he had one hundred per cent cooperation. The Coach had some great players this year, and under his guidance they ranked with the best I With such players as Ken McCally, a two year holder of the All Ohio title. Big 6 ft. 6 in. Bob Kinney really learned how to hold on to the ball. The little but mighty Cliff Hammer who seemed to have the ball most of the time played a remarkable season. Dave Guy, Jim Hager, and Bill Reale made a wonderful showing of team work and accuracy in their final year. Hats off to the 1950-51 Tyger Basketball team and our wonderful Coach’ Vern Hoffman. 116 BASKETBALL COACHES—Bill Potorson. Mike Bylone. Coaching a basketball team is pretty hard for one man, but three got along fine. Bill Peterson, at the left, and Mike Bylene, right, helped to keep the Tygers rolling. Bill and Mike took a big load off Vern Hoffman's shoulders by helping him make one of the best teams in the state. Bill Peterson also coaches the Reserve squad which only lost one game the entire season. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she graduated from the teacher's college in Milwaukee. Before coming to Mansfield Senior she taught at Wausaw, Wisconsin, served as a weather forecaster in the U. S. Marine Corps, and attended Ohio State to obtain her master's degree. Although she enjoys all sports, skiing, swimming, and sailing are her favorites. Our amiable assistant Physical Education director is Mrs. Robert Martin. A native of MacArthur, Ohio, she obtained her degree at Ohio University. She taught at Lemon Monroe before taking her present position. Although this is Mrs. Martin's first year at M. H. S., she has stimulated a great deal of interest into the girl's physical ed program. She likes all sports and participates actively in a number of them. MRS. MARY MARTIN 127 GIRL’S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Prosident— NORMA RIEDER Vice-President — CAROL JOHNS CAROL HARTNETT Secretary— KAY GERHARDT Treasurer— RUTH WELLS Advisors— MISS GOCHENAUR MRS. A. year are the banquet in the fall, and the picnic in the spring, and the various tournaments in each sport of the girl's athletic program. Awards are presented to the girls who earn points in the G. A. A. point system. The G. A. A. Girls in Session SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! WORK OR PLEASURE? PAY HERE PLEASE! TROUBLE, NORMA? ADD IT RIGHT! The Leader's club provides experienced officials for gym classes in the girl's athletic program. Their monthly meetings are used to discuss rules of the various sports and how to assist the instructor in the gym classes. The team captains are a new group in the girl's athletic program. By scoring in tournaments and being captains of the teams in the tournaments, they are gaining experience to become leaders next year. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Tryouts for the volleyball varsity were held in early October, and then these eager girls attended early morning practices for a number of weeks. After a number of practices, they played several games with schools in the surrounding area. They were coached by Mrs. Mary Martin. SOPHOMORE VARSITY The sophomore varsity, directed by Miss Gochenaur, is composed of girls who are hopefuls for next year's senior varsity. They played the reserve teams of several of the neighboring towns. 133 7f VARSITY BASKETBALL The varsity basketball team had one of the most successful seasons of any girl's team for a number of years. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Martin, these girls practiced long and hard during the early morning hours and were rewarded with wins over several near-by towns. SOPHOMORE VARSITY The sophomore basketball team was organized under the supervision of Miss Gochenaur in order to supply experienced players for next year's varsity. They played the reserved squads of teams played by the varsity during the season. 134 VARSITY SOFTBALL Although they will never be major league stars, these girls enjoy playing softball on the senior varsity. Teams from neighboring towns provided opposition for these diamond lassies. SOPHOMORE VARSITY Hoping for a chance to play varsity softball next year, these sophomore aspirants make up the reserve team. They play the sophomore teams of schools on the varsity schedule. 135 Concession Stands Every year at the basketball games there are concession stands which serve you any sort of knick-knack you want. These stands are run by the G. A. A. of Mansfield Senior under the direction of Miss Janet Gochenour and Mrs. Mary Martin. The service of the girls is voluntary but extra points are earned in G. A. A. for this. Sportshead This year a group of girls branched off the Leaders Club to form the office of Sportshead. This office includes four girls who take charge of the different activities of G. A. A. This includes soccer, volleyball, basketball, and soft-ball. They are selected by the girls of G. A. A. It is the sportshead job to line up the teams and see that everything runs on schedule. Lifeguards This year a newly organized group appeared in the girls athletic department at Mansfield High. Organized by Miss Janet Gochenour, this group of girls watch over the weekly swim time sponsored by the G. A. A. Extra points in G. A. A. are earned for this. These girls report in at the Swimming Pool every Wednesday night. 136 INTRAMURAL CHAMPS BOWLING CHAMPS Weekday evenings after school the Colony Bowling Alley is the scene of girls participating in the G. A. A. bowling intramurals. You don't need to know how to bowl, score or anything. You learn while you participate. The team having the highest average at the end of the tournament receive gold medals. VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS On certain weekday mornings at 7:00 girls participate in volleyball games. These girls earn G. A. A. points. The girls are divided off into 2 leagues consisting of 6 teams each. The winner of both leagues play each other for the honor of volleyball champ. The winners receive gold medals. Even though the early hours may scare you, it's all in fun. SOCCER CHAMPIONS Every year on certain weekdays after school soccer games are held. They are under the direction of Miss Janet Gochenaur, and Mrs. Mary Martin and the soccer sportshead. G. A. A. points are given for this activity. At the end of the game the members undefeated team are given the name of soccer champs and a gold medal. It's a lot of fun even though you might get a few scars and bumps. 137 OUR HATS OFF_____ ___TO THOSE WHO HELPED Mr. Rohleder and his staff. Miss Bolus and her art classes.
