— 2 The Manhigan of 1950 Published Annually by the Students of MANSFIELD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD This is a century of progress. To portray the significance of this year which marks half the century, the staff of the 1950 MANHIGAN gives you this yearbook which will serve as a permanent record of the progress during a year that to the seniors will not soon be forgotten. 4 DEDICATION J. MERTON HOLCOMBE, A. B. Director of Hand and Orchestra To J. Merton Holcombe, who for the last twenty-five years ably directed the activities of the band and orchestra, we proudly dedicate the 1950 Manhigan. During Mr. Holcombe’s career at Mansfield Senior High School he produced several championship bands; he was always prepared to offer the services of the band or orchestra to civic activities as well as those directly involved with the school. Mr. Holcombe possesses a genuine spirit of friendliness which has won him the admiration of the student body. It is in this same spirit that has made him amiably referred to by us all as “Prof”. It is with regret that we lose Mr. Holcombe at the close of this school year, but he will not be forgotten by the many parents, almuni, and students who have known him. 5 iwiBfar Don’t crowd, kids . . . Barbara Staples TREASURER ..............John Wakeley HISTORY OF CLASS OF 1950 All colors, creeds, and nationalities combined in forming the graduating class of 1950. It was a class that had to be discovered before it could be really appreciated by the people with which it came in contact. It came a long way from that inconspicuous beginning twelve years before when its members entered the first grade and thus began their long trek which culminated with their graduation in 1950. Originally the class numbered many more than the 355 which graduated. Some moved away and some dropped out for reasons of their own. These early members of the Half Century Class entered into their first six years of school life with all the vigor and vitality that young Americans can possess. After the elementary stage of their school career had been successfully passed, the Half Century Class-to-be was narrowed down into two groups: one at Johnny Appleseed and the other at John Simpson. To them, as it was to countless others, this was at last the “Golden Age” of their lives and truly nothing could be finer or more enjoyable than Junior High School. This feeling probably consumed their naive minds because of the many new experiences that met them at almost every turn. In their ninth year these two groups elected officers who were to lead them through their last year before the “big time”. Ed Demyan was chosen by his classmates to lead them at John Simpson; the ninth graders at Johnny Appleseed elected Duane Getz as their President. Perhaps the greatest interest of all that occupied the minds and energies of these future members of the class of 1950 was the inter-city athletic rivalry between the two schools. Along with the playing of the annual football game between the two schools, each participating Junior High elected and displayed its own queen and her court. Betsy Clark did the honors for John Simpson, while Janet Hardin represented Johnny Apple-seed. On the playing field there was practically no contest as Simpson shelleacked Appleseed, 38-0. September of 1947 saw these two groups unite into what became the class of 1950. By this time the number of class members had shrunk to 450 from the five hundred and eight that had entered the two Junior High Schools. The class did not start off too successfully, but established itself as a group early in its sophomore year by electing officers and by sponsoring a few activities. They elected the following officers to lead them through their first school year: Phil Bolin, president; John Bricker, vice-president; Jean Hathaway, secretary; and Mary Ellen Ross, treasurer. As the school years passed by, the Half Century class began to make its mark. Its feats in the athletic world will never be forgotten. The football team’s victory over Massillon, the winning of the state football championship, and the basketball team going to the state finals were memorable events of its senior year. Such names as A. C. Jenkins, Tommy Tucker, Ed Demyan, Wimp Miller, Tom Weaver, and othei-s will be long remembered in the annals of sport at M. H. S. In its senior year this class made remarkable progress. One of the true highlights was the election of the senior officers afer a campaign that probably never had an equal at M. H. S. Phil Bolin was elected resident for the third consecutive time. The class members chose Bob Ward as vice-president, Barbara taples as secretary, and John Wakeley as treasurer. Carrying on as they had for the preceding two years with dances, projects such as the sale of Christmas wrappings and Tyger banks, they also initiated another way to defray their graduation expenses with their presentation of Varsity Varieties. Its success proved that they had found one of the best means possible for a class to employ, to meet its expenses. They also sponsored such projects as the annual Christmas Sing and the Easter Sunrise Service. Many honors came to this group of students. They contributed much to the school as well as the community in which they lived. Their graduation on June 7, 1950, marked the end of their high school life. It marked the beginning of the greatest struggle that man must face—life. This years seniors picked the theme and the cover at the end of last year, so when this year started, the staff was able to go ahead and start planning the different sections. A commercial photographer was employed to take the underclassmen’s pictures at school, and the senior pictures at his studio. After the pictures were taken and the write-ups were in, a dummy copy of the book was made. When it was finally finished, the printer received the typewritten drafts and engravings. The pages were then sent to the binder after the printer had finished. The rest of the time for the staff is spent waiting for the books to come, and the juniors begin their work on next year’s Manhigan. Between these ten yards some of the most striking and unusual formations of this season were executed. Remember the trip into the jungle with little Black Sambo and the tyger; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; the Hallowe’en show; the big umbrella that opened and closed; and the Homecoming show? The band worked long and hard with “Prof” J. Merton Holcomb and the officers for this successful season, and had it not been for the co-operation of each member this season would not have been so successful. Again due thanks and respects go to the Band Parent’s Club, and Mr. Oberlander for their help and service. When basketball season started a small group of the band organized to form the Tyger Pep Band. In the spring the Concert Band gave a splendid concert which all enjoyed. All in all a most successful year ended with participation not only in school activities but also in many civic affairs. After loosing a heart-breaker to Akron South, the Tygcrs finished the season with eight straight victories including a much deserved victory over Massillon. This was the first time in the 40 year rivalry between the two schools that the Tygers had emerged on top. Six thousand cheering fans and a determined bunch of football players traveled to Massillon and this combination turned the trick. Not once during the entire game did one of those players or fans let up. It was truly a championship team which defeated the so-called “national champs” from Massillon. A host of Mansfield Tygers were honored for outstanding performance. Ed Demyan, A. C. Jenkins and Tom Tucker each received All-Ohio awards while Don Cline, “Wimp” Miller, and Tom Weaver received All-Ohio honorable mention. Miller and Weaver also received the most valuable player trophy and the outstanding linesman trophy respectively. It would be impossible to pick an individual star from the Tyger ranks because the entire team consisted of outstanding performers. A. C. Jenkins was the top scorer for the Tygers while Tommy Tucker was the leading ground gainer. Don Cline completed the most passes with Ed Demyan snagging the largest percentage of them. In addition to these player awards our own coach, Augie Morningstar, received the “coach of the year” honor. Mansfield can truly be proud of the “state champs.” A. C. Jenkins Jim “Wimp” Miller Don Cline Tygers Power Over Cleveland East 33-15 Roaring back from a heartbreaking defeat, the Tygers scored in every quarter to completely dominate the whole game. Although the offense was greatly improved, the big difference was the Tyger defense which didn’t allow East past the 50 yard line until the third quarter. A. C. Jenkins and T. Tucker led the Mansfield offense with two T. D.’s each. Ed Demyan Tom Tucker Akron South Surprises Mansfield 34-27 First game stage fright was the chief factor in the Tygers’ loss. The Akronites passed and ran through and around the ragged Tyger defense but still had to rely on a freak play in the last two minutes to break a tie game. Larry Boyle, an Akron tackle, stole the ball right from the Tygers’ hands and raced over for the deciding score. All Ohio back A. C. Jenkins kept Mansfield in the game until the very last by scoring four touchdowns. Mansfield Knocks Off Alliance 28-14 With A. C. Jenkins adding two more touchdowns in his scoring parade, the Tygers downed a strong Alliance eleven. Mansfield held a 14-0 halftime advantage but the Aviators came back to tie it up 14-14 in the third quarter. This set the stage for Mansfield’s last quarter splurge including a touchdown by Jenkins on a 29 yard flat pass and one by Bargahiser, who recovered a fumble in the end zone. This victory placed the Tygers in a first place tie with Toledo Waite in the Northern Ohio Athletic Conference. 109 Johnny Bricker Bob Busch TYGERS OVERPOWER WARREN 20-0 The Typers collected their third win in a row from a big, rugged Warren Harding team. A tight defense which allowed the Panthers in Mansfield territory only 3 times and a pace-changing offense completely dominated the game for the Typers. A. C. Jenkins plunged for two touchdowns and Capt. Ed Demyan made his first in high school football on a 39 yard pass play. This victory moved the Typers a half game ahead in the tough Northern Ohio Athletic Conference. Mansfield owes a great deal to those men pictured at the left. They coached our Typers to their first state championship in many years. Congratulations to “Augie” Morningstar, the head coach, and to his assistants, Bill Peterson, Fred Staub, and Mike Byelene. Peterson coached the guards and ends; Byelene, the backs; and Staub, the tackles and centers. MANSFIELD ROLLS OVER EUCLID 42-6 The Mansfield Tygers ran their streak to four straight by smashing previously unbeaten Euclid. With A. C. Jenkins playing less than a half because of an injury, Bricker and Tucker bore the brunt of the Tyger offense. Tucker scored three times with Cline, Jordan and Bailey each contributing one. Cline also had a good night in passing; he completed eight of fourteen, three of which went to Demyan. I cft to Bight—Peterson, Morningstar, Staub, Byelene Walt Mayer Charles Marchant 110 Jack Hargahiser Tom Weaver Mansfield Humbles Massillon 16-12 They couldn’t do it but they did. The Tygers backed by 6000 loyal, screaming fans defeated the Massillon Tigers for the first time in 40 years. Mansfield outplayed the highly touted Tigers throughout the game and truly deserved to win. A. C. Jenkins scored in the first quarter but Massillon scored twice in the second to take a 12-7 lead. Jack Bargahisr caught a 15 yard pass from Don Cline in the fourth quarter to put Mansfield in the lead again. The scoring ended in the closing minutes when a Tiger back was forced into the end zone for a safety and the game was ours. Mansfield Bops Springfield 26-12 With a state championship in their grasp the Mansfield Tygers would not be beat. Upset-minded Springfield, one of the top ranking teams in the state, displayed a great deal of spirit, and power, but still went down to defeat. Leading 11-0 at the half, Mansfield held off a Wildcat rally in the last half. All-Ohio A. C. Jenkins scored two touchdowns to lead the Tyger scoring and help our team to a “state championship.” Howie Tipper Hob Ward Those boys pictured at the right deserve special recognition. They are the ones who throughout the season performed the tedious job of serving our football players. They gathered the footballs after practice; distributed towels and helped any other way they could. In return they took the blame for everything that happened and got thrown in the showers by the players. Everyone on the team agreed however that they were a valuable asset. STANDING: I hil Casto. Evidently the week layoff hurt the Bengals because their offensive blocking was slightly off. Twice the Tygers got within the Waite 2 yard line but fumbles broke up the drives. Don Cline was the offensive cog connecting on 8 of 11 pass attempts for 92 yeards. This victory gave Mansfield a half game advantage over Canton McKinley in the conference. Clarence Hailey 112 Jack Wise MANSFIELD BLASTS KENT 48-0 After beating Massillon the Tygers went all out to retain their No. 2 ranking in the state by thoroughly defeating Kent. The offensive power of Jenkins and the speed of Tucker and Bricker was too much. Jenkins and Tucker each scored three times and Bricker once. Don Cline’s eight out of seventeen passes and a tight defense which allowed only 4 first downs to nineteen for Mansfield also contributed a great deal to Mansfield’s sixth straight victory.' BASKETBALL Playing top-notch ball in every game Coach Vein Hoffman’s “Fightin ” Tygers ended up this season with a better record than any other Mansfield team since 1923. The sharp-shooting “Hoffmanites” won 22 of the 27 games they played and managed to go all the way to the finals along the tourney trail to the state championship where they finally lost to the dead-eye Wildcats from Springfield. Mansfield won trophies for the sectional, district and regional championships this season and placed Junior Ken McCally on all three of the all-Ohio teams picked by the Associated Press, the United Press and the International News Service. Ed Schmitt, A. C. Jenkins, and Jim Anderson also won Honorable Mention on All-Ohio. McCally concluded the season with 451 points, a new all-time Tyger scoring record. “Big Mac” averaged a shade over 24 points a game in the seven tournament games and almost 17 points per game for the whole season. With only two of the first six - speedy Cliff Hammer and McCally returning - Mansfield will definitely feel the loss of seniors Jimmy Anderson, who tallied 317 points to finish second on the scoring list, lanky Ed Schmitt, hard-playing A. C. Jenkins and “Springfoot” Willie Fowler. As a whole team Mansfield ran up a new high of 1500 points, an average of 55.6 points a game, another new record. The quintet scored 572 field goals and dropped in 357 gratus throws. Ken McCally was the high man in the foul shooting department, making 85 points; Jim Anderson was second with 83. Fourteen players saw action on the hardwood; of these six were seniors and the rest juniors. All through the season the Bengals played with the good sportsmanship and un-dying spirit typical of all truly great teams. And this year, as never before, the Tygers felt the unsurpassed cheering of the wonderful fans who were really behind them all the way. In closing I think I can safely say that future M. H. S. quintets will really have to go some to equal the truly amazing record of this year’s truly amazing team . 116 JUNIORS This year’s reserves ended the season with the very impressive record of fourteen wins against three losses. Throughout the season they worked together as a well-molded unit. Many of their Karnes were every bit as tense and exciting as those of the Varsity. They led the whole town at various rallies and pepped up the students who in turn cheered the boys to football state championship and basketball regional championship. They also did a wonderful job at the Massillon game. During football season they chose a group of juniors to try out for cheerleaders for the next year. These were voted on by the student body. Next year’s cheerleaders are: Tom Plaut, LeRoy Solomon, Kay Gerhardt, Carol Johns, Harlean Laughlin, and Shirley Jurliss. EQUIPMENT MANAGERS Pictured at the right are two men who have worked diligently during the past year. They were an important cog in our athletic system. They handled the distribution of all athletic equipment including football, basketball and baseball uniforms, towels, balls, etc. They had a tough job but they did it well. Dick Underwood and Bob Knofflock 120 GOLF KNEELING, L. to R.: Rob Scodova, Chuck Vandlick, Ed Dokolvic, Reebee Vrabel. STANDING: I’hil Rahall, Larry Inscore, Jim Hager, “Obie” Oberlander. Because the golf season was not finished by the publication of the Manhigan we are unable to include this year’s record. Last year’s record, however, is included here. The Tygers won only three matches while losing four and tying one. The team played better than the record would indicate, however, because they lost two of the matches by a single point and another by only two points. Jim Hager was low man on the team and Larry Inscore was district medalist runner-up. They are the only two lettermen this year. We wish all the best of luck to Harry Mehock and his team. 121 Kneeling: Jack Kindel, Fritz Haring, Bill Reale, Harold Schaus, Fred Pryor. His greatest trouble will be in finding replacements for such sterling veterans as pitcher Lou Gregorio, shortstop Sparkie Watts, catcher Joe Miller, and third basemen Mike Gruber. Seasoned Veterans Buck McKeever, Cy Elsass, Charlie Marchant, and last year’s batting champ, Ken McCally, will probably be the main cogs on this year’s team. She is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a graduate of a teacher’s college in Milwaukee. Before coming to Mansfield she taught at Wausau, Wisconsin, and then joined the Marine Corps, where she was a weather forecaster. After the service she attended two years at Ohio State and obtained her master’s degree. Skiing, swimming, sailing, and horseback riding are some sports that she enjoys. At the close of the year Miss Louise Ferris will have completed three years at M. H. S. as assistant physical educational director. She is a graduate of Wilmington College and has taught various places before coining to Mansfield. One of her favorite hobbies is studying people. As advisor of the Tumbling Club, Miss Ferris this year organized a Modern Dance Group. 124 Girls’ Athletic Association LEADERS’ CLUB THE LEADERS CLUB Leaders club is made up of a group of girls whose duty is to help the teachers instruct their physical ed. classes. The only requirements to join this club are above average grades and some ability in sports. Leaders are supposed to set an example of good sportsmanship and leadership, not only in gym classes, but also in all school activities. 126 VARSITY VOLLEY-BALL CLUB Early in the fall tryouts are held in the gym for those who wish to become members of the Varsity Volleyball Club. All girls belonging to G. A. A. are eligible for the tryouts. Practice usually comes early in the morning before school starts. They play teams from the neighboring towns and these games are played after school. TUMBLING CLUB If you would care to venture into the gym on Monday nights after school, your eyes would light on a group of girls doing somersaults of all kinds and various gymnastics. To become a member of the group you must pass a tryout elimination. An exhibition in which the club's work is displayed is given each spring. 127 SWAN CLUB This organization is composed of girls who are advanced swimmers. A rigid test is given at the beginning of the year to select the new members. Around the end of March each year, a water pageant is presented to which admission is charged. Meetings are held every Tuesday night after school. DUCKLING CLUB Duckling Club was formed for girls who, as the name implies, are learning to swim. Every Wednesday night after school you will find them in the pool practicing to improve their technique. 128 SOFTBALL CLUB In the spring when all the boys are out playing baseball, these young lassies arc out on the field participating in their softball games. Try outs are early in the season and practices are held in the afternoons after school. Teams from neighboring schools are challenged and the games are played after school also. ARCHERY CLUB If you happened to wander down to the gym after school on Tuesdays, you would see these modern day Robin Hoods doing their stuff. During the warm fall and spring weather they met with Miss Ferris to improve their shooting skill. 129 MODERN DANCE CLUB These lithe lovelies make up the new! y formed Modern Dance Club which met every Thursday night after school. With the help of their talented leader. Miss Louise Ferris, they practiced their leaps and pirouettes in preparation for a spring exhibition. 130 TEAM SPORTS FUTURE ESTHER WILLIAM’S .... A LITTLE MORE OOMPH .... CONCENTRATION .... MUSCLE IN THE TOE .... DON’T STRAIN YOURSELF .... YOU TELL THEM, MISS FERRIS . These ambitious scenes prove that the girls of M.H.S. are very athletic minded! 131 - INTRAMURAL CHAMPS In early fall, soccer tournaments were held and as soon as these were finished volleyball tournaments began. All girls in the school were eligible to participate and the teams winning the most games were declared champs. A basketball tournament was also held but due to the lateness in starting it the picture could not be included. The members of the winning team in basketball were: Jean Sinerson, Lucille Schol-ler, Shirley Dunham, Barbara Jisa, Joan Bruce, Joan Rosen and Joan Johnson. 132 The Annual G A A Informal Initiation 133 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We, the staff of the 1950 Manhigan, wish to thank the following for their help in publishing this year’s annual: Miss Mary Jane Bolus and her art classes for their work on the Division Pages.
