Class History In September of 1936, 544 eager little students climbed aboard the ten covered wagons variously named Bowman, Brinkerhoff, Carpenter, etc., and started on that long trail toward' the gold of education. The first six years passed rapidly in these cov- ered wagons' and carried us swiftly along the trail. For various reasons our ranks were depleted and in 1943 the 522 remaining passengers transferred from the ten small wagons to two bigger, and what seemed better, stage coaches. These were also given names-Johnny Appleseed and John Simpson. The next three years spent on the trail found us expanding in our interests, activities and increas- ing our circle of friendships. School activities and athletics took more of our time and interest. The last year each group chose leaders to help guide them for that year. The John Simpson group chose Boris Baker to lead them, aided and abetted by Don Elias as Vice Pres., Martha Shiplet, Sec.g and Pete Keiser, the Treas. In that other Wagon Harry Osbun was elected Pres.g with George 1Monkl Rus- sell, the V. P.g Anne Shawber, Sec., and Jean A. Robinson keeping track of the money. A natural and pleasant rivalry grew between these two groups traveling along parallel trails and found its outlet in sports and literary achievements. Such stalwart Pioneers as Ferguson, Chamberlain, Gregorio, Weaver and Burkhart often defended the name of Appleseed on the field of sports against the brave men from Simpson headed by Ken Carver, Paul Hammond, Chuck Tuttle and their gang. In the last clash between these two, before they merged into one, Appleseed defeated Simpson, 19-0. This massacre was witnessed by royalty in the persons of Pat Ealy, the queen of Simpson, and' Shirley Jacobs from Appleseed. In 1946 we all clambered aboard our present Con- estoga Wagon to cover the last lap of this part of our journey over the trail. Here we began to hear more of the activities of the ladies among us. Norma McCally and Gizella Knefley had edited the paper back there at Simpson and Emily Stephens was making the Appleseed Press a successful paper. Those active G.A.A. gals became even more inter- ested in sports. As the potential gold-rushers embarked upon the last lap of their journey, some 470 strong, Harry Osbun, Tom Swisher, Norma McCally and Gizella Knefely were chosen to lead the class for the first two-thirds of the trip. Miss Martha Weimer was chosen class advisor, and under the leadership of these, plus an executive committee of eight others, the class progressed rapidly. In the Senior Year, the 360 remaining in the hardy band ran a democratic election along the pattern of the national elections, and selected to head the Class in this, its final year, were: Tom Swisher, President, David Wappner, Vice-President, Norma Touby, Secretaryg and Jean Arlyss Robinson, Treas- urer. In sports, Paul Pinkie Ferguson, Joe Miller, Louis Gregorio, Bernard Weaver, Ken Carver, Nor- bert Shibinski, Harry Osbun, and many others led the field. Proving themselves good followers as well as capable leaders, the members of the class continued the Ch1'istmas Sing, started the year before, the annual Easter Sunrise Service, square dances, and an all-night prom. Finally on June 9, 1949, 387 Seniors received their diplomas, indicating' the progress made during the twelve years. Charles Brown, Chm. Hyphonerian Every other Monday the students of home room 114 become a busy lot as assignments for the next issue of the Hyphonerian are made. During the following Week they gather and write up the news of the school. The editors then collect and correct any errors in the articles to be printed in their division. The material is then sent to the typesetters. The Wednesday before distribution staff members are excused from classes to form the lines of type into proper sequence and position for the paper. They help the printers in the actual operation of the presses. During this time members of the business staff handle ad- vertising, expenses, and distribution problems. There the voice of the school finally is expressed in fin- ished' form. The purpose of the play is to show how three hardened criminals all turn to one thing before going to the death chamber-religion. The scene of the play is the death row of a state penitentiary. The time of the play is just before dawn of a day in spring. The cast of Afraid of the Dark consists of Harry Mc- Cuen, who portrays the part of the Captain, who is a gentleman but for one mistake. Juan, a 19 year-old Mexi- can boy, who is innocent of crime is dramatized by Robert Ward. Willie Fullic, a tough moronic thug, who is not afraid of dying but later breaks down, is played by Phil Bolin. The Chaplain is portrayed by Ray Stretch and David Stanton plays the role of the Guard. The play was directed by Mr. Heasly. Suicide This play shows the stranger side of human nature. Two people have gone to a deserted wharf to commit suicide. Both are disgusted with their respective love lives. The girl, played by Pat Jackson, has too many suitorsg and the boy, played by Lloyd Lewis, has been jilted by his girl friend. The two decide to put off their suicide until a later date and leave hand-in-hand. The policeman is Corky Perrine. Let's Make Upl' Two teen-age boys, played by Dick Eliot and Lloyd Lewis revolt against their girl friends, Jean Robin- son and Tina Taylor, who comb their hair and put on lipstick in public. The males get out new shaving kits and proceed to shave while sitting in a hotel lobby with their girls. The results are hilarious as the boys do prove their point. The supporting roles were played by Donna Brandt, Charlotte Hayward, Douglass Black. Corky Perrine, Joe Peterson, and Barbara Bowles. The class is a cooperative class and the students enrolled are urged to strive for progressive leadership in the field of distribution. The students are taught the fundamentals of salesmanship, merchandising, store problems and speech for business. The fundamentals of selling are applied daily while working with the retailer. Many of the Distribu- tive Education students have chosen retailing as a profession. The F.R.O. met at Akron for a regional convention in November. The purpose of the con- vention was to elect regional officers and to acquaint the members with the workings of the or- ganization. A high light of the convention was a very heated and spirited election of officers. One of the most outstanding candidates was our own president, George Freund. The group accept- ed an invitation to participate in a sales training class conducted by the Westinghouse: we were also guests at luncheon. George Freund and Peggy Brook were the delegates from the Mans- field chapter at the state convention in Columbus where plans for next yearis work were dis- cussed. The outstanding social function of the year Was the emplyee-employer banquet held at the Sky Club May 10. Entertainment for the evening was provided by members of the class. The Christmas gift exchange rounded out the holiday activities. The sale of Tyger pencils, football programs, the collection of weekly dues and sales tax stamps financed the yearis activities. 80 4. Although the team was slightly hampered with injuries to Monk Russell, Jim Chamber- lain and Bob Bush and tempor- ary absences of B. Weaver and Tom Tucker, the Tygers were nevertheless able to have a fair- ly good season, by winning 7 out of 10 games and placing 9th in the State. The Bengals were rated an unsuccessful team, until they pulled a big upset by de- feating the Big Blue from Ham- ilton 26-20. In this game the Tygers and the Tyger's fans showed an undying spirit which Mansfeld had never seen before. From- the beginning of the game the Bengals went out and' fought like wild Indians until the final gun. While the fans went wild by making loud noises, throwing pop corn boxes, and yelling their lungs out for dear old Alma Mater. Two new r e c o r d s were made in Arlin 1 Stadium during the . . The most valuable player award went to quarterback, Paul Ferguson who so brilliant- ly quarterbacked the 48 team through a tough season. End, Kenny Carver was awarded the lineman of the year award for the outstanding lineman of the year. Awards went to lineman Tony Taddeo and backfield man Harry Osbun for keeping the neatest playbook during the 48 season. Captain Joe Miller was awarded a trophy by his team mates for successfully leading his team through a great season. M.H.S. was also honored in having Captain Joe Miller chosen on the All Ohio second team. Honorable mentions were given to end, Kenny Carver and backfield men, Paul Ferguson, Charles Jenkins and Tommy Tucker. Captain Joe Miller was also leading scorer during the 48 campaign while Charles Sparky Jenkins was leading ground gainer, In all, it was a great season -a great team-and a great bunch of fans. o A .Kg Ki X : sf, Q ,S Q L S M L , wx E . Joe Miller when he went 87 yards on an off tackle play for the final tally of the game. 27-13 Playing like pro's the first 30 minutes of the game, the Tygers went early for their second win. But in the final quarter the Blue Streaks came to life and showed that they could play football. The scoring was divided up between Jenkins, Miller, Tucker, and Carver with one each. For the first time Mansfield showed a pass- ing attack which paid off in the form of one score and a total of 68 Yards. Miller went 87 yards on this one. Tommy takes off. 102 Mansfield Plasters Portsmouth 33-0 Playing one of their finest games of the year the Tygers rolled over the Trojans easily with a total of 398 yards. This is the largest total of the year. A. C. Jenkins caught fire and scored three touchdowns while Capt, Joe Miller tallied twice. The Tygers did not have to punt at all and relied en- tirely on ground drives trying only two passes. Tigers Trample Tygers 33-7 Holding the upper hand for the first 18 minutes, the Tygers built up Mansfielders hopes for beating Massillon. But after the Tigers from Massillon made their second tally our Bengals could do literally nothing. With Jenkins sparking an 84 yard drive Ferguson heaved one to Miller for Mansfield's only score. Again, little Tommy Tucker could not get going and Louie Gregorio was called on to cover that spot for the majority of the battle. Tygers Slide Past Springfield 26-20 Suffering from the loss of little Tommy Tucker, the Tygers relied' on A. C. Jenkins and Capt. Joe Miller for their ball toters in the Wildcat fracas. Jenkins scored once and gained 130 yards while Miller crossed the stripe three times and made a total of 152 yards. One of Miller's tallies was in the form of an 82 yard run. Gregorio played a great game as Tucker's replacement and Harry Osbun was a big cog in the Bengal defense. Tygers Claw Kiser 62-7 Bowling over a completely baffled Kiser team, our Tygers showed the state that they were still a team to beat. Going wild in the first half, as they did' all season, the Bengals ran up a score of 41-0 by the end of the second quarter. Somehow the Kiser boys pushed one over in the final period. The best individual performance was turned in by Ferguson when he made an 86 yard TD by inter- cepting a Kiser pass, A Memorial For Pop He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved muchg who has gained the respect of intelligent men, the trust of pure women and the love of little childreng who has filled his niche and accom- plished his taskg who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soulg who has never lack- ed appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express itg who has looked for the best in others and given them the best he hadg whose life was an inspirationg whose memory is a bene- diction. -tBessie A. FOOTB LL ,ff Bengals 0utmud', Marion 1 2-6 Finding out that a wet field can beat the best teams, the Mansfield aggregation had a hard time beating the four touch- down underdogs, Marion Harding. Miller scored early in the game on a neat 28 yard off tackle play. Marion knotted it up at six all at the beginning of the final period but a '70 yard run by Louie Gre- gorio finished off the scoring with Mans- field on top. g l '-mawn X. With an indominatable spirit, which never died, our Bengals ruined the championship hopes of the Hamilton Big Blue. Martins Ferry Nipls Mansfield 6-0 Again playing one of their finest games our Tygers were a victim of bad breaks. The Riders scored the only tally late in the third period. It seemed that every- time the Bengal Ball-Toters broke loose for long runs, they were called back be- cause of infractions of the rules. Gregorio and Tucker both made several fine runs only to have them called back. The ability that our boys showed in this battle moved them from tenth to ninth in the AP poll. l 104 YE OLDE RELIABLES iw ,L , 5. i rpg., 33 5Q5y! But many people who watched them play believe that they should be rated at the top. Faltering at the first of the season, the Tygers finally caught hold and won thirteen of their last fifteen games. Then they went into tournament play and won five straight before being eliminated by a great Toledo Central aggrega- tion by only one point. That game was called one of the best ever seen in Ohio tournament play. This was the first time since 1942 that the red and white have reached the regional finals. In 1942 it was the same Toledo Central that rob- bed the Bengals of the regional crown. S0 our boys ended' the long trail with a seasonal record of 19 wins to 8 losses. The Tygers were defi- nitely a dark horse throughout the season and on into tournament play and turned in many an upset of the dope bucket. Four of the six top men on the team will be back next year to bolster our alma mater in the bucket sport. Among them is slender Jimmy Anderson top point man and second high scorer in Senior High's history. Then there is fast developing sharp-shooting Ken McCally, cool Ed Demyan, and lanky Ed Schmitt who played many a good game in a replacement role. However, the loss of crafty little Pinky Ferguson will hinder the team more than a little. Ferguson was called by many the coolest ball handler ever to hit Senior High. The loss of big Norb Shibinski will be felt but we are sure that some- how Coach Hoffman will come through with another great team next year. Here are a few statistics: Jimmy Anderson was top-point man of the year with 365 followed by Norb Shibinski who had 296. In the foul shooting department the Tygers shot better than 5096 with Ed Demyan receiving the foul shoot- ing trophy with 55 points gained by gratis throws. Demyan hit 6270 of his foul shots. The Tygers as a team averaged 52.3 points per game - a new high - and a grand total of 1,411 another new high. They dropped in 543 field goals and 321 free shots. Coach Hoffman used a total of 20 players during the regular season but even so the team average was 6.3 points per man per game. As we look back at our team of the '48-'49 season let us remem- ber that it was truly one of MHS's greatest. ii: SEASONAL RECORD BASKETBALL The Mansfield Tygers started the 1948-49 basketball l season off with a bang by defeating Elyria on their home 1 floor 49-30. In the second game slender Jimmy Anderson and lanky Ed. Schmitt led the scoring against Cleveland Collinwood with 13 points apiece. We won 49-36. The Mansfield Tygers remained undefeated by winning 61-35 over a weak Tiffin Columbian team on our home court. Tyger forward Jim Anderson had a great night by chalk- ing up 24 points. Coach Hoffman's lads lost their first game of the season when they traveled to Columbus and lost a 35 to 30 decision to an underdog Bexley Lion team. Rebounding from their first loss of the season MHS came back to defeat a scrappy Alliance quintet 60-45. The Bengals lost to Greenfield 50-45 and to Lima Central 59-49 in the Lima Central basketball carnival. After the upsets in Lima, MHS came bouncing back to defeat a strong Ashland team on our home floor 56-40. Nothing seemed to go right at New Philadelphia. We were out-scored by a poorer team 67-60. Despite the bad night for the Tygers Jim Anderson again came through with 24 markers. The Bengals upset a surprised Springfield club in a close game, on our court. The score was 37-36. The Hoffmanites ran into trouble when they met Bellevue on their home floor. We lost 44-37. MHS edged out Akron North in a tough battle 40-37. Our next victim was Fremont Ross. We knocked them off 59-40. You have to have good nerves to follow the Tygers this season. Here is another one point victory. Columbus East 36, Mansfield 37. On our return match with Ashland we broke their home winning streak at 19 games by stomping 43-41. At one time Hoffman's men were behind by 9 points, but after a hard fight they came back to win. Shibinski scored 16 points to lead the Bengals to a 52-43 victory over the Sandusky Blue Streaks. Norwalk was next on our black list. We won 67-48. Anderson had another great night by drop- ping 23 points through the net. The Tygers ran up the largest score of the season while defeating the quintet from Lorain 68-49. The game with the Massillon Tigers was a heartbreaker to lose for the Mansfield Tygers. The score, Massillon 54, Mansfield 53. A mighty Canton McKinley Five robbed the Bengals of a victory in the last game of the season. The score 47-46. The Brains of the Outfit Tournaments In the first game the Tygers easily defeated' a bewildered Galion quintent 67-45. Because of Mansfield's wonderful five we managed again to show Ashland who was best. The final score Mansfield 46, Ashland 39. Bucyrus and Mansfield played off the sectional finals with Mansfield coming out with a 68-46 decision. At the district tournament in Sandusky, Mansfield defeated the Fostoria Redmen in a thrill packed game 52-45. McCally tallied 25 points to gain the highest point total for one game during the season. At the Regional tournament which was played in the Toledo University Fieldhouse, the Tygers squeezed out a 50-43 victory over a comparatively weak Bowling Green quintet. In the final game of the Regional's, one of the greatest last half drives in the his- tory of Ohio high school basketball fell just one point short as a fighting Mansfield Tyger team came to the end of the tournament trail. The Tygers trimmed a 16-point half time deficit to almost nothing as Toledo Central Catholic advanced to the state tournament 54-53. Our hustle boys ended up with 98 - 9110 points with last year's champs Springfield coming in at second with 34- 14115 points. The Springfield team beat our Tygers by 21X2 points a week before the Springfield relays. The one dark spot in the occasion was when Cleveland Cen- tral had won the event but lost seventeen of its points through disqualification of two of their runners. These two fellows were entered in four track events and three is the maximum. The star of the day was A. C. Jenkins who had an individual score of 1115 points which is more than fifty-six of the entrant teams could muster. In the high hurdles Jenkins took second after knocking over the first hurdle and hitting the second. Both he and Ed McCadden of Cleveland East Tech, broke the previous relay record of 14.9 seconds. McCadden made it in 14.6 and Jenkins in 14.7. Jenkins also anchored the winning shuttle relay team and made an easy first in the 22.0 low hurdles. Tommy Tucker was second high while gaining' points in four events and Jim Meister, Paul Ferguson, Samy Wadlington, Paul Hammond, Jim Hager, and Al Poorman all placed in two events. The Tygers are favored to win the State championship this year and by their showing in the Mansfield relays and by re- maining undefeated in dual and triangular up to the time of this writing we are fairly confident that they will. 114 The fifth annual boxing tourna- ment was full of action and ended up with three T'KO's and five hard Won decisions.
