HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF ’48 Twelve years ago in 1936 the majority of the students in the 102nd graduating class of Mansfield High school stepped on the first rung of the educational ladder. The group was divided into ten sections with their headquarters at Bowman. Brinkerhoff, Bush-nell, Carpenter, Hedges, Prospect, Newman. West Fifth. Western, and Woodland schools. After six years of basic training they merged into two large forces at John Simpson and Johnny Appleseed Junior High Schools. At Appleseed, Shelly Swank. Nancy Osbun, Rodney Blahnik, and Dick Haas took the lead and Dick Zeigler, Nick Gagich, George Kama-vas, and Marilyn Hughes directed the activities at Simpson. The schools were rivals in athletics, Gloria Morton and Cathrinc Wilging, the first junior high football queens, reigned at the annual game from which Appleseed emerged victorious. Later Simpson made a come-back by PRESIDENT NORMAN HENRY VICE PRESIDENT PETER VOGT SECRETARY JOAN FREELAND TREASURER ART MERSCHDORF In the tenth year the two groups united at Mansfield Senior High where they were known as the class that dared to be different. David Ganyard, Robert Troll, Nancy Osbun, and Norman Henry were elected by the 475 students to guide the class affairs for the sophomore and junior years. Mr. Ralph Juniper was the advisor. At an election copied from the pattern of a political nominating convention, the seniors chose Norman Henry, Pete Vogt, Jo Freeland, and Arthur Merschdorf as their officers. They were assisted by the members of the executive committee: Lessic James, Ruth Ann Bush, Jane Ann Stoneburner, Betty Long. Nancy Osbun, John Park, Danny Bishop. Robert Troll, and David Ganyard. Among the outstanding accomplishments of the class were: the Christmas sing, the square dances, the Easter sunrise service, and an all-night prom. Finally, with twelve years behind them as proof of their accomplishments, 379 students received their diplomas at commencement exercises on June 2nd. winning the annual basketball game.
