To one who listens to the problems of his associates and gives the inspiration that brings agreeable solution . . . To one who understands human nature and recognizes the chances for error . . . To one who has the Welfare of all pupils at heart in all his endeavors . . . To the friend of all the boys and girls in school . . . To our Superintendent, Mr. W. L. Miller, this book is dedicated. CONTENTS .... Faculty Classes Organizations Athletics Advertising .4115- if if V 1 Y ' 5-'HQ' 'MV' ' 'ilr Mr. Bishop THE MAN who is posing with the pretty student is our assistant principal. He fully intended to become a physician, and had completed some of his pre-medical work when circumstances forced him to leave school. He began teaching, found that he liked the Work, and has been doing that ever since. He Was principal in three schools before he came to Mansfield as assistant principal. He has held this posi- tion for eleven years. Woodworking is one of his chief hobbies, in fact, he taught such a course for five years. Graduating classes have had him as advisor several times, he has been a dramatic coach also. His greatest satisfaction lies in Watch- ing boys and girls grow up and establish themselves in life. Foremost in this man's interests is his desire to help stud- ents fit into the community as useful citizens. Mr. Bishop is a member of the Amer- ican Legion, the P. T. A., and has been advisor to the Senior Hi-Y since 1930. ..... ,.,.l.L.........-i . Mr. Beer OUR PRINCIPAL is just finishing his ninth year at M. H. S. His academic education began in a country school and progressed until he had become head of the Science Department at Ohio Northern Uni- versity.' His favorite subjects in both teaching and research were Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. His chief re- gret is that he cannot find time for all of the additional things he would like to do, namely, experimental work in plant cul- ture. His favorite sports are baseball, fishing, and hunting. He is intensly in- terested in young people and their problems. it is a privilege to him to help a stud- ent acquire the right attitude toward life and help him make it happier and more successful. 'The mischievousness of youth he ascribes to enthusiasm that has not been tempered by the sober thoughts the years bring. He firmly believes that the old as well as the young should continue to learn, and that the elders often lack the vigorous imagination, the friendly and wholesome attitude, and the hopeful atti- tude toward life that belongs to the young people. ,,, JESSE BEER-Principal Ohio Northern University University of Chicago Western Reserve University MARIEL ABERLEiBiology Northwestern University Maryland College for Women C. C. O. League championship. The Murphymen defeated the league squads of Ashland, Shelby, Mt. Vernon, Galion, and Marion. They also downed the Dover and Cambridge elevens, but bowed to Sandusky and the championship Mas- sillon team. The locals' shifty plays were run off smoothly with the outstanding work of the Touchdown Twins, Johnny Hallabrin and Bill Distl. These backfield stars were the chief offensive threat in every game and were the leading league scorers. Bill Locke, captain of the Tygersg Steve Olin, and Gaylord Bucher, all-state guard, were the main- stays of the Bengal line. CAMBRIDGE-SEPTEMBER 19 Mansfield inaugurated its 1936 football season with a victory over Cambridge at Stadium Field. The locals had a good running and passing attack, but were badly in need of a strong defense. Al Banks' 80-yard run for a score was a feature of the game, as was Locke's work at center. The final score was 20 to 0. MASSILLON-SEPTEMBER 26 Displaying plenty of power and championship form, the Tygers from Massillon ran over a scrappy Mansfield eleven to the tune of 40 to 7 in a game here September 26. Outweighing the locals to a man, the visitors' smooth-working grid machine was the fastest thing seen on this Held in some time. Byelene, Herring, and Glass, rangy Mas- sillon backs, swept around the Mansfield ends continually for large gains. The lone Mansfield goal was tallied in the third quarter after a long march up the field. Hallabrin and Bucher starred for the Murphymen. MARION-OCTOBER 3 A hopeful Marion team was handed a severe setback in the first conference game of the season when a superb Bengal eleven smashed its way to a 53 to 0 win at Stadium Field. Excelling in every football maneuver, their tricky passes and driving runs could v.i?. . ks... JY, The M anhigan Tyger Offense Gets Under Way Against Massillon not be checked by the Presidents. Several new localites came to the fore in this game, one of whom was Harold Luckie, dusky pass receiver. Johnny I-Iallabrin's well-directed toss to Luckie accounted for the first Tyger score. Ed Chatlain, Sparky Adams, Johnny Linta, and Christ Kilzer were also outstanding in the whipping of Marion. MT. VERNON-OCTOBER 10 The first out-of-town fray took the Tygers to Mt. Vernon where they preceeded to chalk up their third victory of the year. Although the Yellow Ja-ckets offered a little more resistance than Marion had, Mansfield came off the field at the big end of a 14 to 6 score, and was one step further toward a league championship. A muddy field ham- pered both teams, but it did not prevent Hallabrin from toting the pigskin over the Mt. Vernon goal twice. SANDUSKY-OCTOBER 17 Sandusky vs. Mansfield! What a combination! What a game! Eager Tyger grid- ders and fans journeyed to the Blue Streaks' new field October 17th with an eye to avenging the defeat of last year suffered at 'Sandusky's hands. But, alas, it was not to be. Battling a strong wind and their opponents' heavier team, they managed to hold down the score to a 6-2 adverse decision. The Touchdown Twins, Bill Distl and Johnny Hallabrin, performed in great style and were backed up by Tubby Locke and Ding Olin. Sandusky's great trio was comprised of the giant Maag, the slippery back, Krause, and Ohlenacher, who got off all the tremendous kicks. SHELBY-OCTOBER 24 Shelby played host to a rather ungracious Mansfield eleven which Was out for blood and proved it really was in earnest about winning another N. C. O. title. The light Whippets didn't have a chance against the rampaging Bengals. Five times the locals crossed the goal line, and five times six points went up on the scoreboard. Still, much credit goes to the Shelby team which was composed chiefly of inexperienced players. The M cmhigcm Horvath and Heiser, working at tackle positions for Mansfield, co-ordinated in great style, and the ball-carrying of Bill Distl and John Linta surpassed that of former games. GALION-OCTOBER 31 October 31st brought the touring .Mansfield Tygers back to their lair for a one- sided game with Galion here. With 47 points to 'Galion's 0, Coach Murphy kept sub- stitutes going in pretty regularly, but the Orangemen were still not able to score. DOVER-NOVEMBER 7 The locals went a little farther ,away from home for this game which took place at Dover on November 7th. Again the indomitable Tyger spirit prevailed and secured another victory. However, the joy of winning was somewhat dulled by the fact that Bill Distl, star backfield performer, injured his leg in action. Zuchegno, who stood out in last year's game with Dover, was back in great style, but even he could not stop the sweeping Bengal advance. Bucher, Luckie, and Hallabrin, took their share of the glory in the fight for M. H. S. ASHLAND-NOVEMBER 14 Ashland, traditional enemy of all Mansfielders, invited the Murphymen over to their field for the annual battle. Hockensmith kept the interest at fever pitch, even though they were losing, with a fine exhibition of punting and running. But, in the end, the Tyger reinforcements, in the form of Horvath, Kilzer, and Olin, swept the opposition from the gridiron. The final score was 13 to 0 in favor of Mansfield. This game concluded the 1936 schedule with seven victories and two defeats. Five of these were N. C. O. victories, and brought the championship to Mansfield for another year. Although there are many promising newcomers for the grid ,squad next year, there are many stars of this year who will be missed. Among these are Bill Distl, Christ Kilzer, Bill Locke, Steve Olin, Dick Metcalf, Jerry Dent, Charles Bookwalter, Ed Chatlain, Gil Wiegand, Bob McCormick, Pete Schadek, and many others. Gaylord Bucher, red-headed guard, was again selected by the Ohio Coaches Association to fill that posi- tion on its mythical All-State eleven. H. S. varsity basketball squad was one of the fastest, smoothest-working clubs seen in many years in the local gym. Coach Murphy put a clever ball- handling quintet on the courts that won 13 out of the 17 games on its oversized schedule. A five-star com- bination held the spotlight on the hardwood, consisting of Captain Russ Hoff and Freddy Lewis at forwards, John Hallabrin and the man of mer- cury, Noel Morgan, at guards, and Ed Chatlain at the pivot post, who, al- though he was a little short for a center, equaled the splendid work of Bill Boliantz the year before. On December 4, Columbus East journeyed to .Mansfield for the Tigers' opening game and proved to be an easy Victory. Led by a lanky new- comer, Dave Arbaugh, the locals held the lead until the final score of 25 to Morgan, Scott, and Gallagher Strike a Pose 12- The following week another Colum- lumbus team from South High made its appearance in the local gym and offered the Bengals a little stronger resistance. However, Coach 'Murphy's lads put on the pressure and won 28 to 22. A feature of the game was the fine dribbling and shooting of Noel Morgan who alone chalked up 12 points for Mansfield. Knapp led the visitors with 6 points. Galion proved to be the first conference foe on the schedule and its surprising tricks spelled defeat for the Tigers. Confident of sweeping to victory on a fast offense, the Mansfield cagers forgot about a defense and allowed the Galion sharpshooters to sink one after another from the middle of the floor. When they finally settled down it was too late and the score ended in favor of Galion, 26 to 16. Close upon the heels of this cage scrap came another severe beating administered by a stronger Canton McKinley team. The Tigers started off with a bang and ran up a 12 to 5 lead in the first quar- ter with most of the honors going to Lewis and Morgan. But finally the visitors rallied and paced by Fawcett, forged ahead to win 36 to 27. Out for blood, the locals determined to swamp the next opponent, and Jackson fell before the onrush of a reJuvenated Mansfield five to the tune of 33 to 16. Chatlain, Hoff, and Hallabrin starred for the Bengals. The Murphymen journeyed to Ma- rion for the next game and came back with a 20 to 16 win in their Satchel. This was the first time in three years that the locals had ,come off the court victorious against Marion. Ed Chat- lain was high man in scoring for Mansfield with 8 markers. Mansfield was host to its old rival, Shelby, on the local hardwood, Jan- uary 8, and handed them a 37 to 13 drubbing. Taking advantage of a smooth ball handling offense the Bengals ran rough-shod over a lighter Shelby outfit with honors going to Capt. Russ Hoff and Hallabrin. Traveling to Mt. Vernon for their fourth league contest Mansfield cagers were forced to come from behind in the second half to win, 31 to 25. Four of the Yellow Jackets offered the i Tigers plenty of trouble throughout ' ' the fray and led the spurt of scoring in the first frame. Introducing Lewis, Shelley, and Dials in Dribbling Tactics 74 The M anhigan Although Parma's ace guard, Halliwell, caged long baskets right and left, the locals tightened up their defense and starting the ball rolling, made an unchecked 'march to the lead. The final whistle found the score for Mansfield, 27 to 12. Back in the N. C. O. league Bucyrus made the most of it by defeating the Mansfield cagers, 30 to 23, in the local gym, January 22. Reece, mighty center held the Redmen out in front all the time except once in the first few minutes when Chatlain put the localites ahead with a pivot shot. The leader in the N. C. O. circuit held festivities in her gym for the Tygers' next appearance on the court and turned out to be our old enemy, Ashland. As was expected, Sprague, scoring ace, and a taller team proved too much for a quintet weakened in the second half by the loss of Hallabrin and Hoff who were ejected on fouls. The final score was Ashland 28, Mansfield 18. Stinging from two successive defeats, the Murphymen journeyed to Galion to avenge the slapping given them by the Orangemen earier in the season. With the help of Fredd-ie Lewis and his 13 points, the Bengals evened accounts with a 23 to 20 victory over Galion. The second game against the once-subdued Marion team was a pushover. The locals chalked up 38 points to their opponents' 22. Chatlain's 10 counters ranked high for the locals. With an eye on the past victory over the Shelby five, the Mansfield cagers went to the Border- town gym feeling that the four -quarters would be just one long loaf. But Hartman, rangy center who was out of the fighting the first half of the season, soon put that thought out of the localites' minds. The Shelby five didn't wait long 'to start activities, but proceeded to sink baskets from every place on the floor. The 'Iigers barely woke up in time to save themselves and then took them three overtime periods to 'convince the opposing quintet which waS the better team. Yes, they Won, 32 to 29, and, wow! What a game! This close affair surely showed the fighting qualities of the 'Tigers in a pinch, with a good sound cheer for all concerned. Another close game was had with Mt. Vernon on the home court and Hallabrin's pivot shot brought victory for Mansfield by the close margin of one point. The final score read 28 to 27 for Mansfield. Again the Tigers wreaked their vengeance on a team which had won over them earlier in the season. This time they almost didn't get to the scene of the game, however, because their bus tipped over in a field en route to Bucyrus. But no one was hurt and all were loaded into other cars in time for the game. With deathly -calm they worked their plays with precision and thoroughly skunked the Bucyrus cagers, 47 to 38. Captain Russ Hoff's playing was the highlight of the game and he led his team of Tigers to a sweeping victory. The last game 0f the -current Sea-S011 was 3 thriller from start to fiI1iSl'1. It Was With 4ASl1laI1d 011 the local court and it justified any errors that might have been made by the scrappy Tigers during the season. Yes, Mansfield beat the undefeated Ashland, the iHViHCib19, and PGOPIG said it C0uldn't be done-well, they did it! In fact, the touted Sprague and Hockensmith were locked in the great Bengal ddense and weren't able to do anything. It was Scobey who really did any scoring for Ashland and his best wasn't able to win for the visitors. Lewis and Hoff popped in buckets and more buckets with Ashland right beside them. Ed Chatlain and Johnny Hallabrin did their great part holding down the defensive end under the basket, but Ed was unfortunately put out of the game on fouls. Then it was Morgan's turn and he played his -part to perfection. In the last quarter, with the score 22 to 21 in favor of the Visitors, Noel proceeded to make a shambles of the whole Ashland team with his lightning dribbling and tricky shots which always split the strings. The 28 to 25 score in favor of Mansfield was the greatest satisfaction a great team and their coach could get and it wound up a season that was definitely super. Although Harry Mehock's Red Streaks have completed only half of their track schedule at this writing, it looks like a big year for the local thin-clads. Quite a few veterans remained from last year's squad to form a winning outfit. Among these were Kelley, dash man, Johnny Linta, outstanding performer in the pole vault, Gil Weigand, javelin tosserg Shay, high-jump, Woodbury, shot put, Miles, hurdles, and Bookwalter, Fleming, McConnell, Sampsel, Hallabrin, Banks, Bean, Sawhill, and Bowersock running the distance and relay events. The first meet held at Fremont showed promise in a number of new candidates who were Noel Morgan, a half-milerg Dials, up and coming Spearman, Heiser and Van Geem in the hurdles, Hackedorn in the pole vault, Logan, a member of the 890-yard relay team, Gallagher, a weight many Ike Smith, and many others. The locals ran up a total of 71 points to 37 of Fremont's, and running away with the relay events, the javelin, the discus, and the 220-yard dash. A victory in the 220 set Mansfield way ahead, too. Mansfield's second meet was another win and this time Newark was the loser. The Bengals copped seven firsts in track events and collected 75 points to 57 markers for Newark. Outstanding events were the javelin, in which Elmer Hill Billy Dials heaved the mighty spear 175 feet, 2 inches, the half mile, won by McConnell, and the stellar pole vaulting of Johnny Linta. Carol Kelley's victories in the 100-yard dash and the 220 set Mansfield was ahead, too. 76 The M omkfigcm Top-The Three Linta Brothers Reunited Again With John Taking the Honors Bottom-Shay Does a Bit of High Jumping for ,Dear Old M. Cleveland Central and Erie Strong Vincent of Pennsylvania were next with 27 markers apiece. Only one record was broken and that was the two-mile relay. East High of Saginaw, Michigan, made the winning run in 8 minutes and 42.7 seconds. Other outstanding per- formances were given by James Callista, Strong Vincent, who won the 100-yard dash and the 220, and Lothar Schaeffer, one-man track team of Langley, Pennsylvania, who copped the javelin and the shot put. The Manhigcm l Shaw and Cox Ready for a Few Dives Swimming For several years Mansfield has not entered a swimming team into competition with other schools, but this Winter the practice was started again through the guidance of Harry Mehock. In the course of the year the boys had meets with Canton McKinley, Columbus, Sandusky, and the state champs, Fremont. However, the Tyger mermen were no match for their experienced opponents and usually came out at the little end of the score. For next year the outlook is much brighter, since practically all of this year's squad will be back. Highest point-getter for the locals was Albert Baerren, who grabbed off quite a few firsts in the 100-yard free style. Dick Shaw and Rupert Cox rated fairly high in diving events, too. Other Mansfield swimmers are Jerry Palmer, Albert Allen, Jack Hannon, George Biddle, Truman Clark, Paul Smith, and Dave Mc1Ginty. Paul Schlegel assisted Mehock and served in the capacity as trainer.
