Looking back at them and smiling we remember our childhood years: Making mud pies, “Who has cooties today?”, Saturday morning cartoons, and everyone’s favorite pastime- Sesame Street. Every day we would come home from school, drop down in front of the television set, and stare in amazement. Our appreciation is given to the Public Broadcasting System and the creators of Sesame Street for all of the years of learning, laughter, and fun. No matter how old we get, where we go, or what we do in life-our childhood memories will live with us forever. The theme song of Sesame Street brings out the theme of Mansfield’s 1986-1987 yearbook, “Everything Under the Sun”. Having successfully completed all academic requirements, the 162 young men and women seated on this stage have attained a part of the American dream by earning a high school diploma. Today, they officially become members of the 1987 graduating Class of Mansfield High School and, because of this attainment, they should feel quite proud! Although they now are together as one, almost as soon as today’s ceremony ends, each graduate will begin to go off in his own or her _ own direction. But, because of what occurs here today, these 162 people will always be held together by a common bond; which is of couse, that they are classmates and members of the Class of 1987. Because of their fine behavior and level of academic accomplishment over the past four years, this class is held in high esteem by the faculty. Although deserving of all the praise accorded them, these graduates must realize that because of their vast potential, much is expected of them. Whether going on to a post-secondary school, and the list of colleges and universities is most impressive, going into the world of work, or entering the armed forces, the stamp of the Class of 1987 is upon them and continued excellence is expected. Graduates, I implore you to dedicate yourself to excellence, because although such dedication may require much hard work, it brings a high degree of satisfaction and fulfillment. Regardless of what you decide to do with your life, carry with you the words of the noted educator and former president of Harvard University, James Bryant Conant, who said: “Fach honest calling, each walk of life has its own elite - its own aristocracy, and it is based on excellence of performance.” Id like to close by congratulating the parents of the graduates for the support and encouragement they’ve provided during the past twelve years. And to the graduates I give my fondest wishes for success, and hope you will always have pleasant memories of Mansfield High School. Thank you. ( VALEDICTORIAN - ALAN TUPAJ oad ee Ladies and gentlemen of the school committee, Mr. Barbarisi, Mr. Rosa, Ms. Flaherty, faculty members, parents, relatives, and friends, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to today’s commencement and thank you for everything you have done to make this day possible. I would like to address my comments, however, to a very special group of young men and women, a group that I am proud to be a member of. I am speaking of you, the Class of 1987, and I congratulate you on your accomplishment. For the past few weeks, I’ve been picking up my pen each night and trying to write a speech. I came up with all of these grand philosophical concepts, tried to use these long, impressive words; I tried to be intellectual. Yet, I repeatedly failed to write what I wanted to say. Naturally, I became frustrated and disturbed. Then I started to think, an action that can often lead to some unpleasant discoveries. I found that I was afraid, afraid of not being able to write a speech that would live up to the expectations of others. It seemed as if it wasn’t myself writing, but someone whose only concern was to impress his family, his teachers, and his peers. I began to wonder whether other people experience this same frustration. Maybe other people, at times, want to open up and express their inner thoughts and feelings, but can’t, for fear of not conforming to what others think; for fear of not being accepted. I suppose that’s what I want to talk about today; our need to open up, our need to break down those walls which we hide behind, our need to be ourselves. Look around you. In a few short minutes each of us will go his or her way. Last Thursday, at our Senior Banquet, we were dancing with each other, hug- ging each other, telling each other in special ways how much we care. And, more of the same will take place today. But, I ask you, why must we wait until we separate to show our feelings for one another? What prevents us from expressing our emotions in our everyday lives? Why waste the little time we have hiding behind insincere masks which merely reflect what we think others want to see? Think about your closest friends. Do you truly know what they feel, what they believe in, who they really are? And, perhaps more importantly, do they truly know who you are? Others can never know the genuine inside unless you allow them to. Someone must take the first step if these fears are to be overcome, if some sincerity is to be achieved. Weall like to hear that we are loved. We all need to hear that we are loved. We all need to know that we are worth something to somebody. Don’t assume that the ones you love know that you love them. Tell them. A kind word, a friendly hug, sending flowers for no reason; such simple things can communicate love. Such simple things are badly needed. As we leave the protective environments of our homes and our school, I urge each of you to start out, in your new surroundings, as the real you. Strive to build the inner strength and self-confidence you need to believe in yourself and to express your feelings for others. Hold on to your values and don’t compromise. Release yourself from the fear of what others may think. You need not go out and find yourself. The real you is already inside. Instead, you must lose the fears which surround it. Ridding ourselves of our fears, however, is by no means an easy task. I believe this process begins with the loss of our pride, with a denial of our self-im- portance that will allow us to seek the help of others. Only after humbling ourselves can we hope to arrive back at our childlike spontaneity and imagination; back at the qualities which once allowed us to enjoy and to wonder at the simpler things; allowed us to express love without fear. I feel that it is this loss of pride, this loss of concern for what others may think, that the Bible refers to through the passage that states: “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Mt. 10.39) Finally, I would like to conclude by putting to practice some of what I have just shared with you. Mom, Dad, I love you both very much. And, were it not for your love and guidance over the past eighteen years, I know that I would not be standing here today. Thank you. SALUTATORIAN WEDNESDAY MCMILLAN ah Our creation of an era of raging fads, grotesque wealth, and violent competition shows clearly our transience and our instability. In our quest for a life purpose we allow society to whirl us from one diversion to the next until, obsessed with enjoyng ourselves, we cease to realize that still we are founded upon nothing. We forget that society cannot ever give us a sure purpose; indeed, today’s ephemeral trends and attitudes show that society is merely the outward manifestation of all our inner doubts and insecurities. Turning to the world for a purpose, then, amounts to no more than placing trust in our own weaknesses and coarse desires. Parents, teachers, and guests, welcome to the graduation of the class of 1987. Though we do find brief happiness in living according to whim and popular fashion, we find lasting joy only in living by the universal constants upheld by a philosophy, a creed, or a religion. Free from our human weaknesses, these higher laws provide a solid, unchanging base upon which we can base our selves and our lives. We recognize that these principles represent an ideal “us” and we make our every action and thought bring us closer to that ideal. We let everything we do help us to fulfill the tenets of our faith. And when we acknowledge that lasting joy in life comes only from living out a faith, we see that true living is not a continuous following of whim to a superficial physical goal, but a constant striving to an enduring external one; and we see that greatness comes not from the amassing of wealth or the acquisition of fame, but from the quiet fulfilling of beliefs. We discover success when another watches us act or hears us speak and knows beyond a doubt our values and our deep trust in them. And so I call not only my fellow graduates but you, our parents, teachers, and guests as well, to commit yourselves--to honesty or to charity, to one virtue or to many--so that you will be remembered both fondly and well. Let your lives stand for something more than the indulgence of every passing want. Believe that you are too important to be merely generic members of a moody, restless crowd. Believe that you are of great value, worthy of your own love and respect. Seek your happiness not in the turbulence of the world, but in the constancy of the spirit. It’s the way you ride the trail that counts: Here's a happy one for you. Happy trails to you until we meet again. Happy trails to you, Keep smiling until then Who cares about the clouds when we’re together? Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather. Happy trails to you until we meet again. ] ¢ ‘i ae TO THE CLASS OF 1987 Many times in our lives we are blessed without realizing it. Only much later can we, in retrospect, appreciate certian hap- penings in the context of greater expier- ience. Having advised the class of 1987 I looked forward to a change of pace this year, a break from the sometimes hectic activities as Class Advisor. It was with some reservation that I agreed to fill the position as Advisor to your class this year. Now I say thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with one of the finest groups of young people I’ve ever met. The senior year was a very successful one for you and a most rewarding one for me. I am so proud of all that you’ve done. Your co- operation and the responsibility you dis- played throughout this year serve as an example for future senior classes to emu- late. I wish you all a future filled with many blessings. Thank you, Jim Perry Class Advisor 2 thie Mansfield’s WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 1987 rma Barrett leaps ahead of the pack By Alison Forristal Contributing Reporter She may not be abie to jump tall buildings tn a single bound. but Mansfleld’s Lorna Barrett {s a su- per woman In her own right. With a triple jump distance of 38-4, Barrett set the state record in. the triple Jump. She beat the old re- cord held by Norwell’s Pam Cornell by nine inches. The 5-10 senior also hclds the Hockomock League record for the long jump with a distance of 17-2. Bar- rett, the team captain, placed fourth in the triple jurnp in the Eastern Regionals and placed first in the State Coaches’ Meet at Brockton. “When | was a sophomore, I| tried the triple jump,” Barrett said. ‘The coach said we should just watch and see what happens. I liked doing it the first Ume | tried {t. When I broke the record I was so ex- cited. I wasn't really looking to win. I just wented to do my personal best.” Although she may not be quite as fast as a speed- ing bullet, she holds the school record tn the 100 me- ters with a time of 12.15 and the 200 rieters with a time of 26.2, Barrett !s the only person to hold four schoo! re- cords at Mansfield (tripie jump, higi: jump, 100 me- ters, 200 meters). “She ts a natural athlete,” said coach Ron Rear- don. “She {s a natural triple jumpér. She came here jumping 35 teet without any coach'ng.” She bettered that length by over three feet witi the he!p of assistant coach Paul Souza. Souza cap- tained the Penn State track team and had one of the best high jumps tn the country, 7-4. Another factor in Barrett's success is weight training. “Her legs were weak and she would wobble and lose control during the second phase of her jump,” Reardon sald. “That would take away from her dis- tance. Now she has more control.” She is undefeated in dual meet competition In the triple jump and long jump and has been defeated only once in the 100 meters and 200 meters. “Being a good jumper ts a function of speed and height; you have to have gond basic speed, ’ sald Reardon. ‘Barrett has unusual! superior speed and !s an outstanding sprinter and jumper.” Parrett participates in four events {n every meet. Out of a possible 160 points, she has scored 154 “One person can't win a track mect,” Barrett said. “it takes a whole team to win, I just go out and try to do my share.” Barrett also participate in basketball and ts In the top 20 percent of her class. Next year she plans to attend Northeastern University. “We've gotten letters from Universtiy of Mass: achuselts Amherst, Annapolis, University of Con- necticut. Beniley and Lowell,’ Reardon sald. ‘‘Stie 1s Interestec in engineering and thai narrowed her eee ee” fleld.”’ Barrett intends to participate in indoor and sut- door track at Northeastern. “If | weren't involved tn sports, | wouldn't know what to do with my time,’ she sald. “It keeps me out of trouble.” With the state meet approaching, Barrett is keep- {ng out of trouble and into practice. + + Laine sci 4i i a ™ Mr. and Mrs. Barrett, Lorna, and Mr. gerry Kelly. Harold took the short stage dressed in 19th century style clothing, but it was Poe who captivated the audience for close to an hour March 12 “Some would call me a genius,’” said Poe. “But these people cannot under- stand me, and distrust their intellect experience is a better word”’ to describe Poe's writing, the visitor said Poe talked about his bitter experiences with his stepfather, who forced him to leave home when Poe was 18. Poe's 20th-century admirer said the author had only fleeting memories of his real mother, and Mr Allen warned him too late when his foster mother was dying, so he couldn't be there in her final hours “Poe’’ seemed to brood on this before his audience. He then recited “The Raven,” one of Poe's most famous poems Harold followed this with moving recitation of “The Bells,” which describes four phases of life using the different chimes of bells. The tinkle of the sleighbell moved inexorably to the final knells of death in Poe's rhyme. “| have been called a drunkard by everyone who knows me,’ said “ Poe, ’ as he took a swallow from a glass before his audience “That is truly a compliment my only addiction is to my writing,”” he said. ““In the worst times of my chaotic life, 1 have always continued to write. ” “Poe ’ followed with ‘ The Tell- tale Heart,” perhaps his most stirring account of madness. The famous story of the macabre was lifelike, as Harold described the story of murder through the mind of a ‘hapless madman. Poe's accounts of madness and death dealth with a subject that others avoided. Unfortunately, his death also had tragically modern aspects, Harold told the audience. Poe was found comatose in a Balti- more gutter, and died three days later, ‘‘after one night of partying, similar to Len Bias, the basketball star who died last year ‘‘with his whole life in front of him,’ said Harold. Answering a student question fol- lowing his presentation, Harold said he didn't think that Poe was addicted to opium, alcohol, or any other substance, because his writing was “consistently good.’ He didn’t change style or lose stature during the years that he wrote, Harold said, Poe began writing at 14, and continued until his death at 40, said Harold. Mel Harold began his presentation two years ago, at the urgings of his friends and theater colleagues, he said. He is currently working on expanding his show, including a two- hour performance that he hopes to present at the Kennedy Center or in New York. Born in Boston, Harold returned| from Virginia to find that Massachu- setts audiences were receptive to his show. Interest in the author is usually easy to uncover once he begins his performance. “They come with a set impres- sion’’ of Poe, Harold said. Usually, the first poem (that Harold recites) causes them to think a few seconds and they start to see that Edgar Allen Poe was a real person, ’ Harold said EVENTS AT MANSFIELD HIGH SC HOOL The Mansfield News, Thursday, March 19, 1987 THE MANSFIELD NEWS, Thursday, May 21,1987 “Eddie” Still Here Page? $ 1 87 For Local Students by Mary Stevens It was a play from life, with no lines and only a plot outline Students from Mansfield High School played all the parts. It was also a graphic represen tation of a very painful part of Rhode Island resident Kevin LaRiviere's life, focusing on the life and death of his brother Eddie 10 years ago. But ultimately, the cast and au- dience watching MHS’ production of Eddie was Here” last week may play some part in the play's tragic theme in real life, unless students “wake up,” and stop abusing drugs and alcohol, LaRiviere told his ence. “Eddie was He: is based on Edward LaRiviere's short life and tragic death at the hands of alco- hol and drug use. Students were told the basic story, but supplied the lines themselves, in the 90: minute production. MHS students portrayed Eddie, his parents, friends, and brother in LaRiviere’s loose adaptation of the actual tragedy. The play opens with Eddie watching his own fu neral, then backtracks to show the chain of events leading to his death Eddie was the second son in a family of eight. His mother died when he was 10, and his father re married out of state Eddie and his younger sisters were cared for by Eddie's older brother Kevin, 21, who was starting a family of his own. The high school audience watched Eddie transform from a star athlete, to a juvenile criminal dependent on drugs. Student actors showed the first experiences with beer and pot, the pressure he felt to be accepted by his friends, and the thrill of trying something new that ultimately Eddie was found dead in a car in 1977, after drinking a fifth of alcohol on top of a stomachful of other drugs. He was 15 Kevin LaRiviere told his audi- ence that he wrote “Eddie was Here” in memory of his brother, and to attempt to keep the fami- ly's tragedy from happening in places like Mansfield “If only I had known what to do...he needed help, but no one knew how to reach him,” LaRiviere said. “So 1 wrote this play...because it's too late for him, but it’s not too late for you.” “When you go home tonight, take a good look at your parents. They're there for you. Maybe they don't always show it, maybe they yell a lot. But they love you like crazy, and they want to help...” “Respect that. Respect your triends’ right to stay sober. Re spect your parents, when they tell you not to do something.” said LaRiviere, close to tears. “But SHOW them you know it isn't easy. Give them a big hug and tell them you love them.” “Let them know Eddie is STILL here in Mansfield.” Three teenagers from The Road Back, an outreach and shelter for teenage drug abusers, spoke to students following the play “It’s hard, standing up here in front of a crowd,” said Shane, 18. “I used to be where you are, | used to think, ‘who is this guy ? What does he know 7’ when some. one came to speak about drugs,” he said “I started using drugs when 1 was 12..they almost ruined my life. I'm an addict now, but I'm getting help,” he said slowly “Most of my friends are in jail or dead..I'm glad I got a second chance.” Dennis, 15, told students he years old, “because all my older brothers were doing it.” “From there, I. got into all kcinds of other stuff. I'm a cocaine addict and an alcoholic. I used to think I was go cool...a big man, doin’ drugs. I was a loser ! I was @ bum,” he said. “T lost a lot of friends (to drugs), Car crashes, coke overdoses, you name it,” Dennis said. “A buddy of mine just got 18 years in Wal pole (state prison) ...but I got out.” Derek said his parents used to smoke marijuana with him. He's 15 now, he said, and will be going back to high school next year as @ ‘sophomore. “T should be a junior, but it took a long time to s traighten out after years of drug and alco: hol abuse, he said. “The story of Eddie hurt me more than anything recently, ‘cause I been there...I know what he went through,” said Derek “But I'm still here because | got help. You're still here, too,” he said to the audience. “Thope you keep it that way.” “Eddie Was Here” was present ed as part of Wellness Week at Qualters Middle School MANSFIELD HIGH JUNIOR Jeffrey P. Monogamous relationships and celibacy are two ways to reduce the chances of contracting AIDS, he said, but “the only way to be absolutely, 100 percent sure you don't get it, is to say no.” Mastrorilli’s overview of Ac- quired Immune Deficiency Syn- drome included other possible ways of contracting the AIDS vi- rus, including sharing contami- nated intrayenous needles, con- tact during ‘pregnancy and birth, and receiving the virus through blood transfusions. JAPANESE EXCHANGE The year 1987 is unforgettable experience for me. Certainly it’s not easy to live in another country with different language and culture. It scared me a couple of times. But now, leaving Mansfield, I feel like “leaving home” rather than going back. I could get such a great family and nice friends. This year must not be made with- out your support. The ties that bind us, Are woven together. You came and taught all of us, That love and laughter has a place. It showed in your smile, And showed in your face. I miss you so much, I’m lost without you, But I know that you’ll guide me the way, As if you were here today. Leann As we looked over the rolling green hills lightly covered with snow, we real- ized our friends will never see snow or hills or springtime when the hills are green. She left us at a time when the land is starting to retire for it’s winter nap. In spring it will awaken with blooming flowers and warm spring days. But she will not be seeing warm spring days and flowers in bloom. She will be in a place where spring is eternal and flowers always in bloom. A place where we will be one day.
