Shortly, upon receipt of their diplomas, the 186 young men and women seated before us will reach a unique point in their lives. Receiving a diploma com- pletes a twelve year journey which has provided these graduates with a wide variety of educational and social experiences. However, receiving a diploma signifies the beginning of another journey; one that will not be as comfortable as the previous trip. Because of their entrance into young adulthood, these graduates will be asked to assume more responsibility, and make more demanding choices. Graduates, for the past twelve years, your parents and teachers have provided you the foundation to make intelligent choices. Now that you are leaving the comfortable confines of high school, you must apply what you have learned, because many of the choices you must now make will have far reaching implications. George Moore, a noted Irish novelist wrote, “the difficulties in life is the choice’. Sometimes, the consequences resulting from poor choice can be even more difficult. Therefore, examine closely those decisions which could have a lasting impact on your life. Hopefully, by doing this, you will make choices that produce happiness and success. I'd like to close by congratulating the parents of the graduates for providing them with support and encouragement during the past twelve years. Thank you. 61 62 SALUTATORY ay ace’ Laura Jean Cassidy Members of the school committee, administrators, faculty, family, and friends, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to today’s commencement, and offer our thanks for the hopes and dreams you’ve shared and helped us to attain in the past years. Through your guidance and supervision, we have experienced a small portion of society, and I believe today marks the day that we, the class of 1986, begin to experience the world. For twelve years we have benefitted from the strictly regimented lifestyle necessary for our basic emotional growth, but now it is time to move on. We must spread our wings and soar with the wind. We must formulate our ideals, set our own goals, and find our true selves. Such things can never be achieved if we allow ourselves to be sheltered or continue to conform. The English philosopher, Francis Bacon, stated back in tht 16th century, “Men commonly think according to thier inclinations, speak according to their learning and imbibed opinions, but generally act according to custom.” Unfortunately, Bacon’s words still hold true. Our world continually accepts tradition as the rule for life. Man tend s to be intimidated by these actions and therefore suppresses his own beliefs so as not to be frowned upon by others. Society thinks that his rejection of popular standards is a rejection of ALL standards, rather than a display of creative insight. Great men, namely Plato and Socrates, were maligned in their lifetime because of their disregard for books and tradition. They spoke not what men, but rather what they thought. It is only the courageous who are able to speak their mind, therefore | believe they should be praised, not ridiculed. Fortunately, in time, society is apt to change its opinion of the man with the voice but it may be a long time in coming. I encourage you, the class of 1986, to be true to your feelings, voice your opinions and be tolerant of others. Bring light to your fresh ideas and let their creator be known. In the word of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life’s cultivation, but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneouss half possession.” A close relation once shared the following words with me, and so, in parting, I would like to share them with you, Take pride in your ideas and the uniqueness that sets you apart... I would like now to talk to my fellow classmates, the graduating class of 1986, about the major step in our lives that we all are about to take—the step from our sheltered way of life toa life of independence, initialed by our newly-attained freedom. I would also like to speak of the specialness in each one of us that will help make our individual success possible. The success I’m speaking of is the attainment of our goals and dreams. Each of us has entertained ideas about what we want to do from this point, and the goals we set will represent the stages we go through in reaching our dreams. The setting and achieving of these goals are what fill us with a sense of purpose and accomplishment; they are what we work towards and where we find satisfaction. We don’t know where or when these goals and dreams will be reached, and therefore must keep striving until they are reached. We must also keep setting new ones upon the completion of others. The important thing about these goals and dreams is that we want them and they make us happy. Inside each and every one of us is some- one special, and because of this we can all be happy and can all be a success whether it be at college, in the military, in beginning a steady job, or in starting a family at the completion of high school. Undoubtedly, we will encounter problems and difficulties in our lives, but once we overcome these struggles, we emerge with a new understanding, a new awareness, and a new strength. Each time we are faced with these inevitable difficulties, we will become somewhat discouraged, and temporarily lose sight of better things yet to come, but we must keep hope for these are only bridges of growth that everyone experiences at one time or another. It is as if we must go through the pain and struggle in order to grow, mature, and reach new heights. The future to us may seem vast, but we need not be frightened by this thought, we need only to take each day as it comes. In learning from the mistakes of yesterday, we be- come better equipped to face the trials of tomorrow. Each of us has the power, the ability, the knowledge, and the specialness to overcome any dif- ficulties and to make things better. In striving toward our dreams, we need to believe in work, learning, and achieving as a way of reaching our goals and being successful. We must also believe in ourselves. We will be learning and discovering more and more about ourselves as we leave the familiar faces of our friends and fam- ily, and even the faculty who are all people who have been there at one tme or another to comfort and shelter us in times of need and now as we leave this environment, we must search onto our own personality in order to develop those qualities that will help in finding our own success. As we enter into this world so new to us we must remember to appreciate life by making the best of every day and by finding and enjoying the beauty in the world for it is there. In enthusiastically going after what we want in life, we will avoid discouraging ourselves over what could have been. We musn’t be afraid of making mistakes on our pursuit of success, rather we must look at these mistakes as learning experiences for failure is just as much a part of our lives as is success, and as maturing individuals we must accept these failures and mistakes and continue trying. We will feel a sense of accomplishment for simply having tried and putting forth our best effort. The dreams that we continually push toward can and will eventually become realities and in going after these dreams we find enjoyment and meaning in them for they are always present as something to work toward. We all undoubtedly are experiencing mixed feelings of happiness and sadness, anticipation and fear, on this important day in our lives. The good times that we’ve shared are all memories that will stay with us forever. The guidance and education that we have received up to this point will serve as our preparation for what is to come. Today we are standing on the threshold of a new, exciting life filled with opportunity. Finally, the different ways we choose to deal with this freedom and go on from this point represents the uniqueness in each one of us. Jennifer Byron, Courtney Dillon, and Jeanine McLean were invited to watch various presentations about the Soviet Union, and they had the opportunity to play a game about Russia that they developed. The day began with a dramatization of poetry and plays by Aleksandr Chirkov, a Soviet actor from Leningrad who now teaches at Boston College. Jennifer, Courtney and Jeanine as well as students from Beverly, Cambridge, Holliston, Lexington, Newton, Stoneham, and Stoughton then had a choice of activities. Students could watch a video of Soviet life, see travel slides, or play the game that the Mansfield Sophomores created. The students enjoyed a Russian lunch of borscht, dark bread, cheese, Pe Say ear PERDUE! SSNS SIE: BO and cucumbers, and the day concluded with a concert of Russian music, old and new. The Mansfield students were accompanied by their English teacher, Mary Beth Maitoza. Mrs. Maitoza will present a curriculum project at Harvard this summer, and has been asked to bring the students’ game back, to share with Massachusetts teachers attending a summer seminar in Cambridge. BROWN UNIVERSITY BOOK AWARD Miss Wednesday McMillan, a Mansfield High School junior, was the recipi- ent of the Brown University Book Award in a brief ceremony at the High School library held 5 June. Sponsored by the Associated Alumni of Brown University, the award is presented to that junior “who best combines a high degree of ability in English expression both written and spoken with those outstanding personal qualities which, in the words of the Brown Charter of 1764, give promise that the student become one of the succession of men and women duly qualified for discharging the offices of life with usefulness and reputation.” Selected by the High School English Department to receive the award, Miss McMillan is an outstanding student and a member of the Nation- al Honor Society. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger.We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss. Nineteen years ago,almost to the day,we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground,but we’ve never lost an astronaut in flight; we've never had a tradegy like this.And perhaps we’ve forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle but they,the Challenger seven,were aware of the dangers and overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle’s takeoff.I know it’s hard to under- stand that sometimes painful things like this happen.It’s all a part of the process of exploration and discovery.It’s all part of taking a chance and expanding man’s horizons.The future doesn’t belong to the faint-hearted It belongs to the brave.The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future and we'll continue to follow them.
