Text from Pages 1 - 198 of the 1983 volume:

ee ra Lew wave So much of what is carried away with each of us, from our high school exper- ience is captured in a moment remem- bered, a glance; in a private word that had meaning for that time, in special friendships. All of these are unique to each and cannot be captured in a year- book theme, however well chosen the title. This is the reason we have chosen a graphic theme, visually of today, ‘‘New Wave.” New Wave means change, change as exciting as the speed at which technol- ogy is changing our concept of life and living. New Wave focuses on the individual, takes him out of his surroundings; iso- lates him—connects him, portrays him as a product of a rapidly changing society or as immutable, constant. For we shall surely see you in Fer- nandes or Jimmy’s or just riding around in that big Cadillac of yours. But for the first year in many, you were not there in our moments of need... and not just in illness or injury; but those moments when we need- ed alittle sanity, a little reassurance, a moment of escape. So we dedicate this book of memo- ries to you... for all the times you were our sanity, our reassurance, for all the times you helped us gain a more liveable perspective, a new di- rection, for all the times you simply made us laugh, escpecially at ourselves, for all the times you helped us find the strength and the conviction, for all the times you cared as if we were your own. We do not need a book to help us remember all those times; ee ee ee ene ere eS he ta Da hi a Reales but to let you know that we do re- member; , as and to let you know just how much you are loved and missed See wartiatio: ‘ = (th oe aa RAI sak ae ; : wie Cox be BOOS igh SIG Y te ; AOE ct: Hy pie hat ca oe OO Ne Ae + ae. new momentt, our times eg, ee A cathe ren cnt. The Model Senate is a group of students from the surronding Hockomock schools who meet once a year to practice being a senator. Mansfield senators Barry Perkins and Matt Grif- fin proposed a bill in which high school students are given an equivalency test before graduating. This would help minimize illiteracy amoung high school students. The test would be made up of basic skills. Other bills debated included one about seat belts in automobiles. In order to pass car inspections every automobile must have seat belts in good working condition. If not there would be a $200.00 fine. “It was fun working with the Model Senate’’, said John Elliott. “| enjoyed arguing with people about different bills.’’ His favorite bill was the industrial tax reform bill. On the last day of the Model Senate the students gathered in the Auditorioum to debate and de- termine which bills would become laws. The purpose of the Model Senate is to allow students to experience Democracy in action. As, such, it was a big success. Many of us rode tricycles, wore diapers and sung nursery rhymes. It was an experience that all of the members of the Class of 83 will always remember; as will the members of the Class of ’86—and we were the ones holding the water pistols this time. Fundraisers played a big part in the evolution of the class. We sold towels, maga- zines, football shirts. We served spaghetti and tossed salad. We learned that to support a class, you must work. Karen Dou- cette ‘Now | hear the music: Close my _ | can have it all; Now | am dancin’ eyes. | am rhythm. for my life. In a flash, it takes hold of my Take your passion; and make it heart. happen. We study the past in order to understand the present and become more equiped to deal with the future. Humanities | studies Primitive Man, Egypt, Greece and the Middle Ages. Humanities II studies the Renaissance, the Salem Witch Hysteria, Nineteenth Century Nationalism and the Twentieth and the future. We also learn how to under- stand ourselves and each other; and how to work with others in todays so- ciety. Basically, Humanities is the study of ‘‘humans.”’ thmatrtied Mark Eagan The basketball game played between the girls’ varsity and the women. faculty was a Stellar per- formance on both sides. The women hustled up and down the court, set- ting up plays, stealing and shooting, but the varsity girls withstood the on- slaught in the cool, col- lected manner they had utilized all year; finally ‘“‘edging’’ out the faculty. Rescue squad: John Dil- lon, Matt Griffin, And Fred Moriarity jumped into the act when an “‘old age at- tack’’ was suffered by one of the women faculty at mid-court. The game be- tween the boys’ varsity and the male faculty can best by typified by the famous quote: ‘‘Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”’ There, how- ever was much fun, and anticipation is high for next year’s match. miner . When | received the call, | was proofreading your Ambitions, Pet Peeves, Quotes—the call that said there would be no school, not because of snow, though it was January; and it had just snowed heavily; but be- cause some “‘kids’’ had set fire to the school. My room was more heavily hit, because it was directly above the Industrial Arts Room. And when | went there the next day, the room was dark and smokey; there glass everywhere. All the pictures, copy, papers from the yearbook had been blown all over. Many of the pictures had gotten so hot that they were stuck to each other. The smokey smell of the fire will be there for a very long time. ... And so in the middle of read- ing about all your desires for wealth and an easy life, it struck me that here was one happening among many that spoke to the tenuousness of dreams and the wisdom of desiring happiness, friends, personal satisfaction of valuing intellectual curiousity and discovery, love, loyalty which exist within our own abili- ties; and less at the mercy of senseless acts and the fates. anihiez Studen?- facelly hazhethall @ hin Lye an om MAS AUDITORIUM As you all know this year’s spring musi- cal was South Pacific.
