Nancy Harsch unleashes a powerful slapshot 60 In a town which treats field hockey as just another sport, 1980 marked a year of change. For the first time in the history of Hornet field hockey, a team advanced to the State Tournament. In addition, a 13-game unbeaten streak paced the 1980 Hornet girls to the best record ever by a school field hockey team Leading the charge in the high-powered offense were the team’s All- Hock selections: Sophomore Theresa DeGirolamo and Senior Laura Holske Mernieagtd: 4 , who led the team in scoring throughout the season te foes es he id Early in the season things did not go very well. After a pair of victories over Norton the team suffered three losses, one of which was a 4-0 deci- sion to defending Division Ill state champs, the Canton Bulldogs. Instead of folding after that loss, Coach Hanlon’s girls sparked up, tying their next two games before breaking into the win column. In fact, the team would not lose again until the opening playoff game, in which the Nornets faced rival Foxboro. Tied at one after regulation and a pair of overtime periods, the Warriors eventually prevailed, winning a pen- alty shootout. The loss was a hard one for the seniors — Gai l Roach, Nancy Harsch, (the captains), Laura Holske, Terri Morrison, and goalie Sandy Paulsen — to take, but the 1980 Hornet team consisted mostly of underclassmen, who will be here again next year to pick up where they left off: as winners ae RE OM a“ v oo See ae Michelle LaMarre looks for an opening. net. en Tt oe ak con Se re ea) SO Ls 2 thc ic eRe aeas i tasteinaiiin Theresa O'Malley and Theresa DeGirolamo outmaneuver an oppos- Gina DiGiovanni and Janet Souza penetrate Collision course ing player. John Wentzell returns kick off e With the help of a strong group of seniors, the 1980 Mansfield Hornet Football team posted a respectable 7-3 mark in overall play. Injuries, however, almost ruined the season for the Green and White. After the season’s first game, Jon Lucier, who had gone 4-for-5 passing for 137 yards, injured his foot and missed the next eight games. Junior Dave Todesco filled in, but he injured his knee against King Philip, leav- ing head coach Tony Day without a quarterback. He inserted John Nordberg, and the Hornets went on a roll. Mansfield downed North Attleboro, 13-7, thanks to Nordberg’s play and the defensive perform- ance of Jack Todesco, and lost a tight game to power- ful league champion Canton, 8-7, after leading for most of the game thanks to John Wentzell. The Hornets ended the season on a sour note, drop- ping a 45-20 decision to Foxboro on Thanksgiving Day. On the season, however, several players shined through, including cornerback Macon Givens, and half- back Jim Pedini, who led the team in rushing. David Fournier and Dennis Nash paced the team; this pair of juniors continually placed up front for the Hornets, along with senior Ken Loving and a fine group of supporting runners. The lack of the ‘superstars’, though, so to speak, prevented the Hornets from continually cracking into the top positions in most meets. That was evidenced by the team’s 5-4 overall record and 4-3 Hockomock League record. All-Hockomock selection Tim Dion, who was the team’s consistent leading scorer, paced the team with strong showings in three events (the shot put, 300, and 50) throughout the season. In addition, Mansfield sported one of the strongest hurdling teams in Eastern Mass. Led by Dennis Levine, Fran Shaw, Louis Boldri- ghini, and Peter Malewicz, the team placed fourth in the State Meet this season. The strongest showing of the year for the team came against Franklin, when the team won by an over- whelming score of 60-26. Mansfield lost several games by one or two points in finishing with an 8-12 mark. The first game of the season saw Mansfield defeat Norton on the road, but after that game All-Hockomock league forward Jack Hulburd injured a finger and was forced to sit out five games. In that time Mansfield played some strong basketball, defeating Foxboro in triple overtime 83-78, thanks to Paul Harkness’s 27 points and ten clutch tallies from Orlando Rivera. But Mansfield also dropped one point decisions to Canton and to Dighton- Rehoboth, and that set the tone for most of the season. Among the other big victories for Mansfield were a trouncing of Fox- boro 87-69, in the Albertini Gym, a game in which Macon Givens and Rivera each topped the 20 point plateau. Givens also threw in 25 in a vic- tory over Stoughton, and Mansfield finished the season strong by polishing off North Attleboro and D-R. John Nordberg’s superb 17 point showing helped the Hornets beat the Falcons, while Nordberg, Harkness, and Hulburd led Mansfield to the win over the Red Rocketeers. Leading the way in the scoring category was senior Laura Holske, who registered an average around ten points per game for most of the season despite nagging injuries. Salachi’s team, however, was mostly inexperienced, consisting primarily of underclassmen. Among the juniors were Lisa Tartufo, who became a prime offensive weapon toward the end of the season due to her fine outside shooting. The other seniors were Maggie Jardin, Terri Morrison, and Liz Tighe. As was the trend in most of the Hornets girls’ sports, much of the team boasted a group of sophomores. In the backcourt as starters were Gina DiGiovanni and Theresa DeGirolamo, and coming off the bench was Michelle Tartufo and Michelle LaMarre. Freshman Lori Faumier saw considerable action as back up center. The Hornets came together as the season drew to a close, making a strong run at one of the league’s best teams, Sharon; Lisa Tartufo’s shooting and a strong rebounding performance by the rest of the forecourt has Mansfield within four points in the fourth quarter before the Eagles finally pulled away.
