She understood our concept of what a yearbook should be and gave freely of her time, energy, knowledge and experience to help make Hornet ’73 a meaningful journal for us all. We cannot thank her enough for her patient guidance. We realize now just how fortunate we were to have had a man as dependable as William MacKinnon behind our class. As our second advisor, he has been a constant source of excellent ideas. The sound advice of this quiet man has benefited us all and contributed to our success. The Class of 1973 owes much of its success to our class advisor of four years, Patricia Ferrell. The endless enthusiasm of this unselfish woman has sparked many others to make our years at M.H.S. more memorable. We are deeply indebted and owe many more thanks to our friend and advisor than can be adequately expressed. LYMAN C. AVERY — Superintendent y WILLIAM DeSTEFANO — Principal FRANCIS ANTOSCA — Asst. It all began on a September day in 1969 when we entered the hallowed halls of M.H.S., apprehensively, yet anxious to begin our journey. Our first obligation as lowly Peagreen Freshmen was to memorize a silly poem and recite it on bended knee. Unadvised, yet confident, we began the age old tradition of electing officers — Billy Sullivan as President, Pam Bruun as Vice-President, Marie Butler as Secretary, and Janet Spiezio as Treasurer. The first half of our Freshman year was far from routine, in fact one could say it was rather chaotic, as we had half days, no lockers, and journey to the new High School. Upon enter- ing the mystifying portals of the new school, we, as Freshmen felt insecure and just as confused as everyone else. Eventually the chaos subsided and the days then became routine. Since we respected and admired the Seniors, we watched with anticipation on Class Day, and wondered if our day would ever come. So ended our Freshman year. The summer flew by and another September day arrived. Thus we began our Sophomore year clad in dungarees and T- shirts, since no dress code existed. Our confidence increased for we now held a higher position in Mansfield High. Under the aid of our advisor, Miss Ferrell, and leadership of our officers — Jack Auld, president; Val Vallett, vice-presi- dent; Ginny Hill, secretary, and Janet Spiezio, treasurer, we strived to achieve unity as a class. We really felt a sense of pride when the time came to order our class rings and we impatiently awaited their arrival. Attending Class Day exercises once again, we bade the Sen- iors goodbye, realizing that our destination was nearer in sight. Amazingly enough we were halfway through our high school career as we entered our “Jolly Junior” year under the able leadership of Mari-Lynn Maurer, Ann Durant, Ginny Hill, Janet Spiezio as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively. That year Mr. McKinnon joined Miss Ferrell in the task of advising our class. Our class rings finally arrived and they became the rave of the school because of the brilliant new stones. Plans were underway for our most profitable fund raising activity, the candy sale. Everyone did their share selling the candy to make this a success, but Janice Letteney sold the most by far. As Spring arrived Girls’ State delegates — Kathy O’Don- nell, Mari-Lynn Maurer, and Pam Bruun were selected and Michele DePalma, Ann Durant and Janet Spiezio were chosen as alternates. For Boys’ State — Chet Czuj, Richard Straughn, and Jerome Spiezio were selected. Towards the end of the year, Dodge Murphy studio was chosen by the mjority of the class to be the photographers of our yearbook. Kathy O’Donnell and Don-Thomas were cho- sen as Yearbook Co-editors. It was now up to us to plan the biggest social event, the Junior Prom. As our motif we chose an oriental theme. All who attended had a very enjoyable evening at the Glen Ellen Country Club. Our Junior year then came to an end as we looked forward to the summer and the taking of our senior portraits. The sands of time ran out on our last summer vacation. We took a giant leap and entered Mansfield High for the last time as “Grand Old Seniors,” a position which should have been highly respected by the underclassmen. We were looking for- ward to the initiation of the Freshmen, but we became disap- pointed as we were limited to our demands. Again we were led by able officers, Mari-Lynn Maurer, President; Roberta Galanti, Vice-President; Ginny Hill, Secre- tary; and Janet Spiezio, Treasurer. This year we were honored with the presence of a foreign exchange student from Japan, Chicako Takebe. Her presence was not only a great learning experience for her, but also for a great number of us as well. One of the highlights of our football season was the Vic- tory Dance, which after many disputes, was held on Thanks- giving Night at the Mansfield Middle School. A great number of students from both Mansfield and Foxboro attended this dance. One of the bigger social events of the winter was to be the Christmas Ball. Unfortunately, only a small number showed up, but all who did surely enjoyed the crowning of Queen Valerie Vallett and King Davie Wood. A more astounding accomplishment was the annual musi- cal under the direction of Miss Trombley. A terrific cast pres- ented “Hello Dolly” on March 29th, 30th, and 31st. The lead- ing role was captured by Barbara Conroy. The actors had as great a time putting on the musical as the audience did receiv- ing it. With these senior activities behind us, we all felt the excitement of graduation when we were measured for our caps and gowns. The juniors also felt the proximity of our graduation as they busily planned our reception with the use of our class flower, the carnation; our class color, rainbow; and our class motto, “We’ve only just begun.” At our recep- tion, Carol Hagerty and Kenny D’Ambra were chosen as our Queen and King. And now as we anxiously await to receive our diplomas, we realize the importance of this memorable occasion. May we keep in mind that we entered this educational institution as a group, but now leave as individuals. With mixed feelings of sorrow and happiness, we leave to go our diverse ways. GEASS OF 1973 PROPHECY The rising sun was almost breathtaking. The cool, crisp air renewed the spirit for adventure; it was a perfect spring morn- ing in the year 2,001. But appearances are often deceiving. The problems of winter were yet unsolved with the arrival of spring. Right now at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, a group of dedicated nurses and therapists are discussing plans to replen- ish the dwindling medical fund. Why, it’s another K.O. Production! We can see Lynne Cotterill, Kate Roane, Sherry McCrady and Nancy Thayer, registered nurses who are now proud members of that infa- mous organization ‘““The Nearsighted Needle-wielding Nymphs in White.” In the corner Barbara Conroy and Michelle DePalma, now wealthy inhalation therapists, are in acrimonious debate con- cerning that age-old rumor that the human body needs oxygen in order to survive. Once they join the conversation going on at the other end of the room, Michelle has a brainstorm: a CIRCUS! A circus would be an exciting and welcome nostal- gic trip for many. It was unanimously decided upon — all thought that it would be a financially successful enterprise. Berta Galanti, now a medical technologist, and Val Wheeler, agree but are at the same time doubtful. Kathy McCalsky, a world-famous veterinarian, perceives yet another problem, “What group shall we approach for help?” Everyone draws a blank until Kathy Rose suggests that the Class of 1973 would surely work for such a worthy cause. Kathy O’Donnell quickly turns on the video-phone to call Mari-Lynn Maurer, the class presiden t back in ’73. Mari-lynn in turn contact Ginny Hill, who immediately dispatches notices to all the members of the Class of ’73. The response is overwhelming. Within days, Linda Boldri- ghini, Henrietta Clodius, and Jim Duarte offer their assist- ance. Responses from Linda Main, Carol Staples and Donna Mahana follow soon after. Bill Inman volunteers the service of his Volkswagon to transport members of the class to the circus. Carol Steeves offers her service and experience as Business Manager and organizes each of the activities that make up the show. Donnie Dethlefs, Melissa Prescott and Frankie Goodman exercise their talents by designing the great structure in 3 days. Similarly, Jeff Brunetti, Ann Durant and Paul McNamara do not disappoint us in their speedy construction of the building. Last-minute preparations are checked by Val Vallett and Jeanett Zaffini. At long last, the great day arrives. We expected a large crowd because of the excellent weather forecast television meteorologist, Chris Collella, has given us earlier. Approaching the entrance we first see many of our class- mates working in their own special vending booths. Ray Pel- rine is professing the value of his Bosco while Charlie Pierce proudly shows the crowd the secret to caring for his famous waterproof handknit sweaters. Everyone is busily exchanging money for wares before the show starts. The line of booths is nearly endless. Walking along the boardwalk, we meet Linda Stephens and Dave Richard enthusiastically selling sodas to Kathy Magro, Jaye-Ann Reagan, Donna Sheldon and Joyce Westhaver. Robin Keating is closing her booth as she has already sold out her supply of cheerios and pretzels. Mark Knights, however, is not so successful; only Richard Curtis, Karen Sullivan, and Mary Randall are curious enough to stop to examine his latest and most curious invention — a super- sensitive pen filled with real platinum that transubstantiates. Michelle McKay and Sandy Drummey are rapidly selling out at the ticket booth. The crowd is so thick that ticket-col- lectors Nancy Frongillo, Mary Bruno and Cathy Fuller cannot keep up with the demand. A plea for help brings Mary Corliss and Maryann Roche rushing to assist them. As the doors close we see those famous law enforcers, Bill Sullivan, Gary Nelson and Ken D’Ambra, in active duty as they rush to guard the class treasurer Janet Spiezio as she determines the profits. Our dashing ringmaster Kevin Sullivan steps into the main ring to announce that the show is about to begin. Bandleader Bruce Oldmixon taps his baton to ready his magical musi- cians: Maureen Demers, Debbie DeLong, Donna Colby, Betsy Koukol and Elaine Goddard. The lights dim and a hush falls over the crowd. On the left all eyes are focused on a tremendous horse show. Trainer Charlene Cogen and her assistant Cheryl Page have done an excellent job in training these magnificent stal- lions. On the right we soon are amazed and thrilled by Beth Swanson and Bob Haynes, who are fearlessly riding atop a rare pink elephant. The main attraction at this moment though, is in the center ring. A line of beautiful dancing girls consisting of Carol Hagerty, Cheryl Goss, and Marie Butler is being lead by none other than Paul “Cheesecake” Connor himself! As Bruce and his Musical Magicians end their selections, Will Gaboury and David Federici and Diane Marvelle sing selections from the musical hit Carousel. One of the last acts before intermission is the daring flying trapeze act. The four stars are a company of four: Melvyn Car- roll, Mike Devine, Lisa Gookin and Billy Kelly. However, not to be outdone, Liz Collins — now a flying nun — steals the act just before the houselights go on. The doors open and all move outside to catch some of the sideshows. The building is now empty except for Debbie Chambers, who is diligently practicing her baton twirling for her big solo in the second half of the show. Someone hears Air Force General Jim Dill explaining to Jerry Spiezio that Don Thomas will not be able to photograph this great event as he is tied up photographing the polar bears at an Alaskan resort. Entering a side booth, we see Sue Crisp, Patti Coughlin, Joe Magro and Vinnie Dunner trying to sell veg-o-matics. How- ever a crowd gathers behind us where we see the fat man, Bob Giles, and the fat lady, Janet Nash, dancing under the direc- tion of Lisa Athanasia. Reaching the artists’ booth, we are cap- tivated by the talented Sue Peloquin, who is ardently drawing a caricature of Bob Anderson, Robert Goyea, and Ed Bedard. Dounan Morton is leaning over her shoulder timing her with a genuine antique MHS stopwatch. A cry of dismay is heard from the usually quiet Donna Pel- legrini; this leads us to believe that something is not right. Through the rising flames we soon realize that the Fabulous Fire-Eaters, Steve Andberg, Jesse Straughn and Helene White have fudged their act. Fireman Don Bellevance rushes to the rescue with a single bucket of water. The roar of the motorcycles warns us that the dare-devil motorcycle act is about to begin. As we head back toward the tent, we have to fight through the impatient crowd waiting in the line for the kissing booth. As Jimmy Kuplast awaits his titillating kiss from Diane Clarke, we see David Wood stum- bling away in ecstasy into the halls of mirrors where he bumps into Beth Mitchell. Together they blindly make their way to the big top. Three jugglers, Pam Bruun, Sara Forbes and Janice Giovino are pleasing the crowd with their faultless performance before the dare-devil act begins. The motorcycles roar and Vinnie Guerrini enters, riding atop the shoulders of Rich Brown. Didge rides fearlessly through a hoop of fire. Meanwhile, Jimmy Roberts is left behind with engine trou- ble. In the next ring, Dot Purrier and Randy Tatum are avidly receiving lessons from the world’s fastest talker, Janet Fisher. Romping in the aisles are Denise and Paul Sargent, the fab- ulous brother and sister duo performing their very original clown act. The spotlight focuses on the final act: the great “Zambini,” Rick Treannie who is risking life, limb and body by foolishly trying to control four man-eating lions. Ronnie Bonvie “the true wings of man,” seems to be flying atop the most majestic lion. Suddenly this lion escapes from the cage door that Jim Stein has absent-mindedly forgotten to lock. Mike Connell and Kevin Marquis are in hot pursuit of the lion escaping with the petrified Bovine. The lion is captured and brought back to the ring. A sigh of relief is released by the crowd. Before fully recovering from this shock we realize that all is not well in the audience. Writhing in pain are Chet Czuj, Tim Mowry and Bill Van Ryzin. Why are these men in pain? Because they have just been treated by Paul “the butcher” Pedini, the most feared dentist in the world. And now for the grand finale: a human cannonball. Up until this moment Kathy Fernald has been furiously goading Bill Poirier into polishing the cannon throughout the whole show. Bev Cutillo takes her stance behind the cannon as Sumitra Patel bravely slides herself into the cannon. Before the shot is fired ringmaster Kevin Sullivan announces that Janice Lette- ney has generously offered to host a party for everyone at her home. Also, millionaire Bob Morse offers to chauffeur one and all to the party. At this moment, the cannon is shot. Sumitra flies throug h the air with a trail of red, white and blue smoke. At Janice’s house we are greeted by that famous American model — Diana Power. Inside, Kathy Payden is helping to serve refreshments to the huge crowd. We all enjoy the food that has been catered by Donna Bedard Jackson, Miss Betty Crocker of 1973. Bob Packert is wildly chasing the world’s greatest athlete, Jack Auld, through the house for his priceless autograph. Claire Butler and Donna Hovey loudly argue over Carl Jung’s classic work ‘Modern Man in Search of a Soul.” The inebriated Jeff Kett bellows “This is even better than that last big senior party in 1973.” From a far corner we hear Mike Hartford nonchalantly remark “indubitably so!” |. ah Hatisiyi yaaa 4 i Qo Vincent J.
