We are indeed happy to have you with us on this occasion. You: eresence is a joy and inspiration as we come together in this final reeting as a class to receive the material evidence of our success an? Oo bid farewell to many pleasant relationshinos, The past three years have been momentuous ones for all of us. A appy group, combining work and pleasure, we have been as a company Cc: ongenial travelers, exploring in the vast domains of knowledge. We rave become acquainted with some of the world's finest literature; ‘uch names as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wordsmorth, Keats, Shelley, and a sost of others are now most familiar to us. Modern languages and the sciences, too, have opened up to us paths into strange lands. Some of us have learned of ancicnt peoples = of the history and culture of the Greeks and Romans. We have delved into the very originals of those old stories of mythologv, translations of which we read as children in our books of fairy tales. in truth do we say with Keats: Much have I travelled in the realms of gold And many goodly states and kingdoms seen. While some have been exploring the fascinating field. of the classics, others, having caught the spirit of the remance of modern business, have been devoting themselves to the study of this subject in all its diverse and interesting phases. But in addition to making ourselves familiar with interesting and important facts, with rules, and with formulas, we have learned something far more precious. We have learned. to think logically, to be reasonable, to use good judgment and taste, to be independent, to complete the task begun, to follow instructions intelligently, to be critical offmour own work, t o be honest with ourselves, to consider the rights of others. In short, these years heve been spent in developing such mental and moral habits that we might face the voynge now before us with eagerness and confidence - that we might be able to say tonigh: at the end of our high school course: Drifting afar to the dire vaulted caves where life ‘and its ventures cre laid, The dreemers who gaze while we battle the waves, may see us in sunshine or shade; Yet true to our course, though our shadow grow dark Wotll trim our BR64A@ soil as before, and stand by the rudder that governs the bark, Nor ask how we looked from the shorel Once again, in behalf of the Class of 1955, I welcome you, parents, teachers, and friends; and I sincerely hope that this evening may be as enjoyable to you as it will always be memorable to us. eh A ear io MP Gr ay nies s nrg hit sfeieaamt Au seats olnse ant Sato covite tant sno Pier iO? During this period, we hnve been accomplishing worth-while things - things which will help to make life more comprehensible. Tonight we finish our preliminary training; tonorrow we shall stand upon the pier where our ship is anchored, waiting for us to bogin the great voyage, and we shall gaze with awe upon the vast deep before vs. Confident in our high school preparation, we shall sail out fear- lossly and couregeously, though we realize that the course we must follow is not an easy one. There will be many obstacles to overcome, 3b with perseverance, honesty, initiative, and loyalty, we shall ve SolesbG) sceer Our Sshiip successfully around’ the rocks, The crags’ will. ireaten us, the swirling whirlpools will entice us, and the sirens of the reofs will sing to us, but if we are always guided by the clear hite light of the beacon of our goal, we shail never veer from the course. Before we embark, we wish to express our deep appreciation and conanks to our teachers who have so willingly and so unselfishly aided aan Our preparation: for this voyage. it is their help that has made it possible for us to face the future with faith and courage. To our parents, who, we know, have mode great sacrifices that we might hnve a high school cducation, we wovld express our decp gratitude.
