We seldom think about it, hut every smile we give, every time we greet a friend in the hall, and every moment we are associating with people is an important happening in our lives. Together these help mold our outlook and place in society. • • • Socially Growing .. . In the past few years the enrollment in the Mansfield Public School system has increased quite rapidly. During the 1967-68 year the enrollment was 666; during the 1971-72 year it had risen to 833. The increase is evident everywhere—in the longer lines at registration, the congested halls, and in the crowded classrooms. . . . Univ. of Ark- ansas, Sponsor: Eighth Grade 38 The most important subject required by Mansfield Schools is English. Because of their importance, English courses are highly stressed, and teach the basic and specialized fundamentals of English and Literature. Donna and Bill laugh as Mrs. Goss comments on a literature story. Senior Literature, taught by Miss Browning, emphasizes the histon of English Literature. The Freshman Literature class goes over their daily home- work. A well-rounded mathematical program is offered at Mansfield High School. The program leaches students the basic skills and techniques, as well as how to solve the more advanced mathematical problems. Seventh made math students relax while getting instructions for a test. Mr. Vincent demonstrates how to prepare an experiment in Chemistry lab. Mansfield High School offers a well, rounded science program, including General Science, Biology and Chemistry. It provides a very up-to-date laboratory for the students to do their experiments in. General Science is required of all Freshmen at Mansfield. This course, taught he Mr. Fox and Mr. Padgett, teaches the student the basic fundamentals of science and prepares him for more advanced courses in the field. Several social studies are offered at Mansfield, including a new course in American Government. In Social Studies, an emphasis is placed on current events of today as well as events which happened in the past. Connie, Jimmy and Terry listen attentively as Mr. Carmack explains a problem in Economics. The World History class prepares to see a film. The Civics class is reviewing for a test. Business Education includes a variety of courses designed to help at personal projects and for advancement in a business career. To improve in these courses you must remember that Practice makes Perfect! Miss Browning dictates a letter to the shorthand class. Freshman Home Ec. girls are cutting out a dress pattern. Agriculture and home economics are the two vocational courses offered at M.H.S. Mr. Sam Taylor is Agriculture instructor and Mrs. Cecelia Thompson is Home Economics instructor. The school offers four years of agriculture and four years of Home economics. These vocational courses are elective, although all boys are encouraged to take at least one year of agriculture and all girls at least one year of home economics. Randy, Arnold, and Phillip are constructing a bookshelf in Shop. 45 The guidance program assists the individual in choosing and planning what he will take the following years. Occupational and collegiate information is also available. The library provides an up-to-date variety of information, including library and reference books, magazines, current event papers and newspapers. It also gives the student a quiet place to work. 46 The eithth grade music class is learning the words of a new song. Music is offered as an elective to those not in band or chorus. Study Hall is used to do homework, make up tests, check out library books and magazines, and to do reference work. Mr. Simmons and three of his Driver’s Ed students arrange to begin their practice drills. Driver’s Education instructs stu- dents on how to drive, driving defensively, and to have good attitudes toward driving. 47 i'' v 4 ' . •' V «i ■ •1 i v n i r ,v V(y '-v-fe i '■''s’ ‘'Tr ; % % mm ; jfi tr2mr- ; 171 % 1 HONORS Jane Overton, Editor 49 '■OOC Most Beautiful i Kathy Presson km Vicki Purser Sophomore Fight h (Irath Becky Cox Valarie Wilburn Junior Runner Freshman Carol Simpson Debbie I loll Judged by: Pele Charlton, Promotion and Advertising Manager and William L. Students classified in the tenth through twelfth grades are eligible for membership, provided they hold 3.00 or above grade average. This “B” average must be maintained in order to remain a member of this organization. BETA CLUB OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT Chris Campbell-Treasurer Steve McKennon—Vice-President Randy Cross—President Kathy Presson—Secretary Jane Overton—Historian Debbie Slate—Reporter The Beta Club presented an assembly program this year in which the new members were initiated. A special feature of the program was a patriotic skit. The Beta Cluh was in charge of the entire program. Miss Barbara Browning, the sponsor, and Beta officers are shown here presenting the new members with membership certifi- cates, pins, and journals which makes them official National Beta Club members. rhroughout the year the Beta Club sponsors many projects, some fund raising, some service projects, and some just for fun. I he MHS chapter is in charge of the publication of a school paper each month. This year as one of the major fund raising projects, candy was sold. The money that is raised through the lund raising projects goes mainly to help pav for lodging for the members who attend the State Beta Convention which is held in Little Rock each year in January. The purpose of this convention is to further the knowledge of members about what is happening in Beta Clubs throughout the nation and to elect state officers. The delegation this year visited the State Capital where they are shown on the Capital steps. First Row Left to Right: V. Wilburn. L). Sorrels, M. Ellison, M. Bean. K. Sanderson, T. Libby.
