S ohe 1969 Oiger Mansfield High School Mansfield, Arkansas Kdilor........................................Jim Thomas Assitant Editor ..............................B«’Uy Jesse Sponsor....................................Edmond Brewer 2969.. .ode jjear Moved This year, a diram became fact as the students of Mansfield High moved into a new building. Our old building was erected in 1927. and no longer met the needs of the current student body. Much student labor was utilized in the move, as many students lent a hand to speed things alor . Typical of the facilities unavailable in the old building is the new language lab. School days in the old building were often cold. dark, and wet. .. While warm, dry, well-lighted halls characterize days in our new building. School School board members stand in the lobby of the new school. The school l oard members are shown in the conference room of .?°mt . ° ngbt: President hark Overton, Allen Tucker, the new school which they helped to make a rrality. All students cannot participate in as many subjects as they would like but the school does its best to accommodate the larger part of the enrollment. This year has been a greater success because of the new educational facilities w hich have been provided. The new environment has made it much easier for the students to study and for the teachers to do their jobs. Gnglisfi The senior high Knglish teacher. Mis Baker, helps her eleventh grade Knglish class with their literature assignment. The second semester is devoted to liter- ature while the first semester is con- cerned with Knglish grammar. This junior high Knglish class, under the direetion of Mr. Cochran, has a lesson in Knglish grammar. The teacher is there to answer questions and this student takes advantage of it. ‘6n e 3ine Arts of Writing Speaking The journalism class works in class to accomplish many things: to write articles, to read from the text book, to discuss newspapers and how they are run, to work on the annual, and to do anything else that concerns writing or journalism. Journalism work cannot always be done in a classroom. Here journalism students work in the office typing, getting pictures ready for thr annual, and running odd jobs that must be done. Mrs. Holbrook, speech arts teacher, stands in front of the speech class giving instructions to the class. This class takes notes, does the senior play, and has parts in all types of programs and assemblies. A required part of the speech work is getting up in front of the class to give a speech that you have thought up and prepared. Here Jan Quick is shown delivering a speech that she has prepared, to the students in the class. Mr. Kennedy, senior high math teacher, is shown here conducting his trigonometry class. This is the highest course in math that is offered at Mansfield this year. It is currently filled with all senior boys. Mr. Blanton, junior high math teacher for the first semester, is shown with some of the students he teaches. Miss Linda Joyce took over for Mr. Blanton after he left. Mr. Kennedy is shown teaching his algebra II class. Mat fi Mrs. Vincent, substitute junior high math teacher, is shown with one of her math classes. Mrs. Miller, senior high social studies teacher, reads to her history class. Mrs. Miller likes to review the chapters in class with the students to help them get the important facts. The civics class goes over their lesson in class. Socia! Studies Miss Barker, junior high geography and reading teacher, stands behind her geograpny class as they pose for this picture. Reading Miss Barker reads orally to her eighth wade reading class. It is important to comprehend reading material as well as to read it. Science The chemistry class, consisting of juniors and seniors, answers questions from their text books in class with a little help from Mr. Vincent. Debbie Qualls and Peggy Boydston set up and demonstrate an experiment for the rest of the students in their eighth grade science class. Mr. Vincent, science teacher for all grades in junior and senior high, fixes a film strip in the projector. He is standing in one of the two science workrooms. locational Gducation Miae Mayncr answers some questions about essay questions she has asked her family living class to answer. Home economics girls eat the dinner that they themselves have planned, prepared, and served. Steve Williams and Charles Wilsey work with the welder while TherreB Johnson looks on. In agriculture the boys work on projects in bodi agriculture and Aop. Mr. Taylor, the agriculture teacher, has helped Mansfield to become one of the best F.F.A. chapters in the state of Arkansas. Business Gducztion Miss Browning, business education teacher, stands in the back- ground of her first year typing students. The typing II students sit at their typewriters figuring out the problems that they are currently working on. Mias Browning stands before her bookkeeping class giving instructions and answering ques- tions about an assignment. Study Hall and Pfiys ica I 6d ucation Almost all of the students at Mansfield at one time or another have a study hall in which to get reports and lessons. Mrs. Simpson is the study hall teacher. P.E. is offered to both boys and girls in senior and junior high. In this course the students participate in all types of outdoor and indoor sports and activities. Driver education Mr. Blanton along with Kathy hlhson and Marsha Dorris, who are two of his students, stands beside the driver education car. The car is loaned to the school especially for this purpose. Hi Drary ami Counseling :i atTftMii The library is an important Dart of the school and ours is truly beautiful. The students are utilizing its facilities in every way. Many of the students come to the library to study and to get reports. There are an adequate number of tables and chairs to accommodate them. Mr. Lowrimore, the counselor, works at his desk recording data on one of the students enrolled in the Mansfield school. A representative of the F.B.I. talks with a group of seniors interested in a career in F.B.I. work. Students are given oppor- tunities throughout the year to study various occupations. ■ Band ana Cfiorus Band is a subject which requires much practice. This is a typical practice session. Our band is a young band and is doing a very fine job. The chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Greta Allen, is a very active group. They entertain at assemblies, P.T.A. meetings, banquets, and other special occasions. Mr. Laslrr School Smployees Mr. Laster and Mr. Kfurd work as custodians for the Mansfield schools. Mr. Laster works at the high school and Mr. Efurd works at the elementary school. Mr. Kfurd The bus drivers are important to the school because they arr responsible for the students until they arrive at the school. The cooks have the very big job of preparing lunch for all of the hungry school students. The den personnel serve snacks, cold drinks, and hot sandwiches to students and teachers. t y 1968 Homecoming Queen Miss Mon a Kaye $ones Homecoming Royalty Senior Maid Kay Harwell Junior Maid—Linda Gee Sophomore Maid—Tawana Lowe Maid of Honor-Kathy LUison Eighth Grade Maid—Cindy Carson Seventh Grade Maid-Dana Gray Homecomin 3 loafs Floats always add to the Tigers Homecoming and this year the classes worked extra hard to show what they could do. Oigers Continue to (Improve The Tigers opened the football season with high hopes and these hopes were still high after the first game despite a disappointing 6-0 loss to Danville. The Tigers then bounced hack to down Roland, Oklahoma, 26-14. Hartford came next and the Tigers lost a heartbreaker 7-2. Mansfield opened its district schedule against Greenwood, one of the Top Ten teams in Class A, and was beaten 35-0. Booneville came to Mansfield and took a 33-6 win. Charleston, the suprising team in District 4A, took a 31-7 victory. Mansfield with its season record standing at one win against five defeats, did not appear to have a chance for a Homecoming victory against Waldron. Rut the Tiger defense, spumed on by a large crowd, held Waldron in check for three quarters. Rut then in the fourth quarter, Waldron used three touchdowns for a 20-0 victory. Mansfield then hosted Mountianhurg. a non-district team, and won an exciting 20-14 game. The Tigers ended the football season against Paris in a cold and muddy game. Paris took an early lead and won the game 33-6. Senior Therrell Johnson represented Mansfield on the All-District team as a Defensive Rack. Senior Steve W illiams and Junior Stanley Johnson were Honorable Mentions. Coach Lewis, in his first year as a Head Coach, did a fine job preparing the boys for each game. First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Brewer, our sponsor, for the invaluable assistance he has provided. 1 would also like to thank the journalism class for the hard work they contributed. But most of all, I would like to thank my staff. Much midnight oil was burnt and much free time given up so that this year’s annual could be published. Your wonderful support has been greatly appreciated. Jim Thomas. Editor 3vom ode Staff We of the Tiger Staff hope that we have captured part of the magic of the school year ’68-’69 in this yearbook, but only time will tell. If many years in the future you pick up this book and it brings back memories of your school days that have long been idle, if you remember that certain class, game or trip, or if you remember a friend that has gone a separate way, then we will have succeeded in producing a yearbook that is worth many times the purchase price, and all our work will have been worthwhile.
