Public Health is another intricate part of our nursing education. For one week during our Junior year we travel with a Public Health Nurse. This week's ex- perience combines the art of nursing, scientific principles, and the ability to relate with others into one unit. We learn the problems which are faced by those families who are taking care of the ill at home. During this time we incorporate teaching methods which are individualistic for these families. Now is the time we really begin to realize what is involved in home nursing. The class organized in October with election of officers and a s1ave-sa1e money making project. Fall and win- ter quarters consisted of study of basic sciences and fun- damentals of nursing and two to four hours a week clini- cal experience beginning in December. Investiture Service was conducted Sunday, April 2, 1967, at 3:30 P.M. in John Simpson Jr. High Auditorium. The class consists of thirty-six members now formally embarked on the long road to the practice of their chosen profession. Getting a Good Start What? Physical examinations and immuniza- tions for smallpox, diphtheria, typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, and tetanus are completed by each student before en- trance into the school of nursing. Psychiatric affiliation at Massillon entrenches forever in our minds the vital importance and meaning of this basic prerequisite in caring for people. The keeper of the keys in a hospital for the mentally ill has a responsibility and obligation to patients and co-workers. Although many wooden and metal doors' are kept locked, the ultimate goal in psychia- tric care is to unlock the troubled mind by accepting the patient and his illness, building trust, observing, relating, and listening. Through our instructor, Mrs. Franz, we learned that the skill of psychiatric nursing is demonstrated in the nurse's ability to be sensitive to each patient's feelings and thinking. If 1. Between the innocency of an entrance exam, and the dignity of an R.N., there comes a delightful creature called the student nurse--S.N. They come in assorted sizes, weights, and shapes, buy they have the same creed: to enjoy every second of every hour of every day off duty and on, and to protect themselves with griping, Qtheir only weapon j, when their forty hours are over and the supervisors are in the coffee shop . Student nurses are found ever ,j -underneath, or jumping through, swimming from and running, 1Z'HFA1f'Q51 e in their way. Patients love them, R.N.'s boss them, 0, 5 1 lies ignore them, doctors tolerate them, ' '-I7-V f . and nothing protects the Q51 ,- f A student nurse is truth El' on her uniform, beauty with gloves on her hands, wisdom with p illin in her hair, and the future with scissors in her apron. ' ' To the doctor, a student nurse is an inconsiderate, questioning in- truding jungle of noise, and when you wantzher to make an impres- sion, she becomes a sadistic-,giggling creature, 'ent on wasting as much time as possible, and sleepingjthghough cl sses. A student nurse is a composite, has t1l1e'appEgge:fbf a horse, the di- gestion of an ulcer patient, the energyoffi sdip suds enema, the lungs of a switchboard operator, the imagination of a scalpel, the audacity of a nurse aide, and when she gives pills she has five 'thumbs on each hand. She likes . . . food, few potatoes, vacations, Christmas, money from home, love stories, water in its natural habitat, working elevators, doctors, off duty, and fire alarms. She's not much for books without pictures, laundry bags, hairnets, study hours, metric sustem, rice, and the diet kitchen. Nobody gets so much out of doctors and medical conferences. No one can cram into one day . . . five enemas, twelve complete baths, five classes, three trips to the morgue, four trips to the pharmacy, set up a com- plete uniform, polish shoes, stay out till 12:30 and still get along with her roommate. A student nurse is a magical creature. You can campus her but you can't keep her out of trouble. So you might as well give up. 'She is your maid, porter, aidQ1d your classmate. 4 She is freckle-faced, pint-sjgedjgfunQiltwiiigibffindle of noise, but when she gets off work with her aching feet and-tiredlbaclg, uafterawlgng, long dayj shef amps inceisaigm d ren !53igIie.lwiiHT61isr,feffam0us words, Waite me at six.
