Tonya Patterson, Nisha, and Lirinzo fire up the fondue. 54 Your Fancy Manor's Home Economics department offers a two hour catering course. It can be substituted as a third math credit, which is necessary for graduation. The catering class gives Seniors and some Juniors the chance to learn how a caterer works. Mrs. Brinkley and Mrs. Knight take their students on field trips to cooking schools to actually see how a professional caterer works. Students learn how to plan, prepare, and serve meals correctly. During the year the class will prepare cakes, pies, breads, vegetables and meats, which they will sell all year round. One popular ev ent is the sale of Valentine cookies, which many students in the school buy. The students come into the program with no experience and as they learn more their sales lists get longer. The highlight of the year though, is when one half of the class plans, prepares, and serves an elegant formal dinner for the other half of the class, they then reverse roles. An important part of the curricu- lum is the exposure to career opportunities, and job placement after graduation. Overall the fu- ture caterers will agree it’s a good experience for them. nd, ) .
