Coach Of The Year On Friday, February 21, the Portsmouth Sports Club bestowed three of its most prestigious awards upon Mustangs. This marked an-inprecedented occasion. Manor was awarded the coach of the year, the athlete of the year and a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding baseball player, all in one night. The master of ceremonies was Bruce Radar of local television fame and the keynote speaker of Dave Winfield, the All Star right fielder of the New York Yankees. The coach of the year is Bruce Phelps, coach of the regional champion baseball team. The player of the year was Mike Rountree, a basketball letterman, winner of All District honors baseball and All City, All District, All Tidewater, and All Regional honors in football. The $1,000 scholarship went to Jamie Ewers, a three year All District centerfielder, and almost sure fourth consecutive year repeater on the team. , Dave Winfield delivered and elegant but down to earth speech warning student athletes to stay away from drugs and always strive for excellence in everything they do. After receiving his own award, Coach Phelps presents the most outstanding college lineman in Virginia award to Jim Dumbraski of the University of Virginia. 13
