Norcom. This sign was put up outside of the Manor Fieldhouse to let the community know where to register to speak for or against the Manor-Norcom regrouping and re- naming. Hey we, we back the red and black, Our school is proud, we shout out loud | RED AND BLACK! Our school is proud, we shout out loud | RED AND BLACK! Don’t take that M, that H, that S from me. Don't take that red, that white, cause it’s dynamite. And if you do then I will surely die, cause I'm a MUSTANG THAT'S WHY!!! Elveta Ewell, a newscaster for Channel 13, seemed very interest - ed in the meeting. Several students show their spirit for MHS by wearing their LONG LIVE MANOR Not only were the students at Manor concerned but their parents were also. HIGH T-shirts. Mustangs Forever!! | Our Standard Is Excellence Long Live Manor High Manor High School has been the focus of a major dilemma this year. The superintendent of Portsmouth Public School has recommended that our school take on the name, colors, and traditions of another existing school, Norcom, and cast all that we have into a sea of forgetfulness. The Manor student body is outraged and we have let our voices be heard by the superintendent and the school board through personal conferences, public hearings and editorial letters. We don’t plan to give up our school without a fight. We have a heritage and a tradition and we vow to uphold them. We have made great strides. in our short thirteen year history. We have produced scholars and athletes who have competed on every level and succeeded. We have won two team State championships, as well as several individual state championships. We have numerous district championships and regional championships, one of these in 1985. We have also received acclaim as coaches of the year and athletes of the year. Academically, our students have been recipients of major scholarships to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in this country. These students have and are currently standing tall at these universities and some have already taken their places of prominence in society. We want our alumni to have a school to come back to and a school to be proud of in the future. Our school means a lot to us and we want to preserve of for posterity. We always stand to be counted with our alma mater as our guide. Alma Mater WE OF MANOR HIGH SCHOOL STAND HERE TODAY A GENERATION EAGER TO LEAD THE WAY. OUR SPIRITS WE OFFER, TORCHES OF LIGHT FLAMED BY YOUR GUIDANCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND MIGHT. HANDS CLASPED TOGETHER, BROTHERS WE STAND TO DEDICATE OUR FUTURE TO YOUR DEMAND. TO REPRESENT JUSTICE, HONOR, AND TRUTH WE STAND A PART.OF MANOR HIGH SCHOOL Welcome Back Knowing the school, knowing the students, and knowing the Mustangs, were definite help, to our principal, Mr. A.B. Niemeyer. Mr. Niemeyer has been a very good asset to Manor High School. His “open door” is always there for anyone who has problems or needs guidance. (Above right) Mr. Niemeyer takes care of business. (below) Mr. Niemeyer takes time out to spend some time with the Honor Students. The Administration Mr. Jeter spends alot of time getting to know his students, as well as spending time in his office. Students appreciate his concern and have welcomed him with open arms. Both Mr. Jeter and Mr. Potter are great assets to Manor High School and the students and faculty are glad to have them. Mr. Potter is a highly respected man at Manor High School. His concern about the students is excellent and he shows that he cares. “They Make Things Smooth For Us.” Mrs. Jackie Thompson, Office Man- ager, smoothes things out. This marked an-inprecedented occasion. Manor was awarded the coach of the year, the athlete of the year and a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding baseball player, all in one night. The master of ceremonies was Bruce Radar of local television fame and the keynote speaker of Dave Winfield, the All Star right fielder of the New York Yankees. The coach of the year is Bruce Phelps, coach of the regional champion baseball team. The player of the year was Mike Rountree, a basketball letterman, winner of All District honors baseball and All City, All District, All Tidewater, and All Regional honors in football. The $1,000 scholarship went to Jamie Ewers, a three year All District centerfielder, and almost sure fourth consecutive year repeater on the team. , Dave Winfield delivered and elegant but down to earth speech warning student athletes to stay away from drugs and always strive for excellence in everything they do. Athlete Of The Year Our Standard Is Excellence Coach Phelps accepts his plague with pride as the coach of the year. Mike Rountree (L), athlete of the year, poses with his father while Dave Winfield signs autographs in the background. Bruce Radar tries to get a laugh from the audience. Coach Phelps, Ewers And Rountree Get Recognition Jamie seems lost between the presenter and Dave Winfield. Rountree, a man of few words, ponders over his acceptance speech. After receiving his own award, Coach Phelps presents the most outstanding college lineman in Virginia award to Jim Dumbraski of the University of Virginia. 13 This is the spirit. The Mixed Chorus performs at the Christmas Concert at St. Andrew's Methodist Church. There are many honors students can attain in the Choral Department. These honors are achieved by preparing a piece of music and showing excellence in ex- ecuting it. Auditions are sometimes in- timidating but definitely worthwhile. All- City Chorus, Regional Chorus, All-State, and Honors Chor are all goals outgoing Chorus Members hope to accomplish. Juniors and Seniors who make Regional Chorus are eligible to audition for All- State Chorus. Competition is very stiff in that only 20 people and a few alternates are allowed per district. Honors Choir is also a challenge, but it is strictly for Sen- iors throughout Virginia. Students repre- The 1985 V.M.E.A.
