Dedication In deciding for the first time in Manor High School’s history to dedicate the Yearbook to a person worthy of recognition for their contributions to the student body, certain guidelines and criteria had to be established. First of all, the person selected must be either a member of the faculty or staff. Secondly, he or she must be an individual exhibiting certain exemplary characteristics which include: devotion to service, pride in Manor High School, re- sponsiveness to others, dedication to position, and the ability to cope with the myriad of problems involved ina school like Manor. This year’s selection was no contest. One person, first and foremost, was unanimously chosen for her devotion to Manor in all aspects of her six years of service. Although faced with personal hardship she never failed to give one hundred percent plus effort to her job. She was always willing to help others, doing things not required in her job. She was also cheerful, empathetic, and above all, she protected the Mustangs from falling apart financially. Therefore, We, the Staff of the 1978 Mustang, do hereby dedicate this, the Sixth Edition, to Mrs. Verna Mae Hughes, our school Treasurer. We wish you the best in whatever the future may bring. In float judging, the Art club took first place easily with their psychedeli- cally decorated “Magic Funk Wagon’, followed by the Seniors Class and the Industrial Art Club who won second and third places respectively. Suspense- ful anticipation filled the air as the moment of the crown- ing of Homecoming King and Queen was drawing near. Each of the class attendants was introduced and greeted with a fanfare from the band. As the contestants, dressed in their most formal attire, came on the field, each was presented to the capacity crowd. Tension mounted as a drum roll accompanied the announcement of William Brown and Daphne Stills as the 1977 Home- coming King and Queen. Mr. Niemeyer presented the Queen with a beautiful bouquet of roses amid thunderous applause from the crowd. The football teams returned to the field at the half- time festivities. Although Manor’s team was an underdog, they showed tremendous effort and determina- tion. The Mustangs were out- pointed by the Indian River Braves only in the last quarter of the game. The theme of the Prom was “Tropical Para- dise’’, with decorations including palm trees, Tiki heads, and hula girls. The band, Harvest, got the dance off to a great start with their terrific disco beat. McIntosh was on hand to provide professional pictures of all the couples. The occasion was also made special be the catered refresh- ments. It was evident that the Juniors had really put forth much effort to make this a truly memorable event. Most couples headed for the beach for a great meal and more dancing at the Ramada Inn Shipmates after the Prom. The consensus was that this had been the best Prom ever! Resting after a fast dance. In his two years at Manor High School, he became the friend of many of his fellow Mustangs. During his Sophomore year, Steve played on the Junior Varsity baseball team. As a lefthander, he played the positions of pitcher and left field. All of Steve’s interests were not in Manor alone. He was a faithful Christian and at- tended Bethany Baptist Church. In spite of his athletic ability, during his Junior year, Steve decided to devote all his free time to motorcycles. He dearly loved motorcycles and won numerous trophies in competitions locally at Chesapeake’s Dirt Park and at Oceana. Even though Steve has departed, his memory lives on in our thoughts and hearts. He will be greatly missed by his friends and fellow students. We, of Manor High School, love you, Steve. 23 MW abe One XW 8 “2 OO The Class That’s Great, Is 78!! The Senior Class of 1978 has been the most active class © ever to attend Manor High School. This class has also been the most spirited, the most intelligent, and the most unified. The Class of ’78 was a proud class for many reasons. One of these was the fact that they produced more Honor Graduates than any previous class. Of the 346 graduating Seniors, 56 succeeded in becoming Honor Graduates. An- other reason for the “Pride of ’78” was the fact that they earned the reputation of being charitable and generous. They exceeded all of the other classes in contributing to such worthy causes as the United Way, Canned Food | Drive, Operation Santa Claus, and the Red Cross Blood Drive. Homecoming further instilled pride in the Seniors. they received second place for their float, The Speakeasy. One of the highlights of the year for many Seniors was the Senior Class Trip to Orlando, Florida. The trip was made possible through several fund raising activities which included: a dance, donut sales, the Talent Show and the Miss Manor Pageant. The Seniors, along with their chap- erones, boarded the bus in order to depart at 8:00 p.m. on March 23, 1978. Riding all night long, they arrived at their motel at noon the next day. Everyone immediately Senior Class Officers: Vicki Wilburn, Assistant Secretary; Michael Johnson, changed into bathing suits for_a pool party and a trip to Vice-President; Mr. Leroy Williams; Carolyn Scully, President; Crystal Daw- Wet and Wild. That evening was spent at Mystery Fun son, Secretary; Kathleen Bell, Publicity Chairperson; Ricky Peacock, Treasurer. House. The following day was spent entirely at Disney World, riding rides, taking pictures and buying souvenires. Sunday was spent sight-seeing and visiting Sea World. Monday, after a brief stop-over at Lake Buena Vista, the Seniors began their return trip to Manor by way of South of the Border. It was a very enjoyable trip, leaving the Seniors many great memories to look back on. The Prom, sponsored by the Juniors on May , with its — Tropical Paradise theme was really beautiful. Everyone admired the decorations and enjoyed dancing to the music — of the band, Harvest. . May 22-26 was designated as Senior Week. The Seniors dressed up for Kiddie Day, 50’s Day, Dress-Up Day and Jean and Shades Day. The week was climaxed by Senior Teacher Day. The Senior Reception was held on May 30th. The Seniors felt truly honored when they saw the georgeous floral arrangements and the catered refresh- ments. June 2nd was the Senior Assembly. This day was also known as the unofficial Senior Skip Day. On this day a record 401 persons were absent and there were 277 early releases. ; Baccalaureate was held at 3 pm on June 4th in the Field. House. Susan Hinton, the Salutatorian, presided with the Rev. Charles H. Bowens as the guest speaker. The big day for all Seniors—Graduation Day—took place on June 8th at 8 pm. Margaret Anne Spence presided with David Har- rington, Ann Elizabeth Hester, and Pamela Gail Brown speaking. The Seniors proudly marched into the Field House to “Pomp and Circumstance” as their beaming relatives and friends looked on. Many tears were shed as the Seniors sang the Class Song written by Margaret Anne Spence. Commencement happily marked the end of a 12 year struggle for education. The work was made much more diffi- cult this year due to the fact that the entire Staff was inexperienced. Susan Hinton was elected Editor-in-Chief of the 1978 Mustang. This office entailed such things as doing layouts, typing copy sheets, proofreading pages that the other members of the staff had done. She also spent many after-school hours working on such sec- tions as the Opening, Seniors, School Life, and the Closing. This year’s Junior Editor was Steve Eure. She spent many hours after school, on weekends, and during the summer to ensure that this book was well assembled. A person that was indespensible in many ways was Jean Williamson. She worked dili- gently on many sections, including Freshman, Faculty, Organizations, School Life, and Division Pages. Without her efforts, this Yearbook would have been impossible. Working closely with Jean was Rhonda Fly. She worked long hard hours after school and on Saturdays to help the 1978 Mustang be a success. Cindy Evans displayed her devotion through her efforts on the Sports and Ad sections of the book. In Charge of the Ad section was Cindy Col- train. This job took great amounts of time and hard work. She was also in charge of the Homecoming Court and Prom Section. Anita Jackson worked with Cindy Evans on the Sports section. ee Valerie Harwood and Bambi Hughes work-. ed at completing the Junior section. The real guiding force behind the Mustang were the sponsors, Mr. Smithwick and Mrs. Watts. Nobody liked sacrificing their Satur- days to work on the Yearbook, but Mrs. Watts made this a little more bearable with her smile, yearbook expertise, and DONUTS! Mr. Smithwick devoted countless hours work- ing along side the Staff in seeing the book to its completion. He earned the respect and gratitude of the Staff through his willingness to serve. Therefore, We, the members of the Staff of the 1978 Mustang, have completed this edi- tion for you, the students of Manor High School, with love and pride.
