PROPHET Margaret Trsdale OCCASIONS WHICH Are Highlligllts in cle Senioras Year and Are Unforgettable by Unclerclassmen .3214 nt Council Installation. The llonfirz-. The Snake- Dance Homecoming SENIOR HISTORY On a warm September day in l94-3 a group of merry youngsters tripped happily into Miss Boseis room to start their long siege of learning. Those remaining of the original class are-Jimmy Bagnal. Libby Bagnal, Carolyn Barrineau. Frances Mae Bradham, Sylvia Bradham. ,lean Brewer, Anna Boswell, Shirley Ann Clark, Loy Daniels, Sue Hancock, Edward Holliday, Ceceile Kervin. Jean Mahoney, Landon Piatt. Laura Ann Plowden, John Ridgill, and Betty Richburg. We traveled happily through the first grade into the second where we were joined by Betty Jean Ard, Marianne Campbell. and Louis Holliday. Grades three, four, and five passed quickly as we worked very hard for knowledge. During these years we added to our number four new classmatesflune Bradham and Gwen Hodge in the third grade, J. C. Dennis and Elizabeth Lackey in the fourth. We all agreed that the sixth grade was very hard. Here we were joined by Bernard Avin, Lillian Blackmon, Thomasyne Stukes, and Rose Thompson. The seventh grade passed rather slowly. This year we were separated for the first time into two groups. We had six new members to swell our number-Virginia Barwick, Preston Geddings, Carolyn Holladay, Sylvia Lowder, Christine Ridgeway, and DeLeon Scott. Now! At last we thought that we had really grown up. We were about to reach high school. ln the eighth grade our class was increased by sixteen new members-Robert Alderman, Esther Mae Barwick, Frances Ann Britton, Amelia Ann Burke, Violet Car- ter, Sammy Corbett, Frank Drose, Jean Du Bose, Sarah Ann Geddings, Cecil Hodge, Ray Hodge, Rhoda Belle Hodge, Victor Jackson, Marion Thompson, Margaret Tisdale, and Bill Wilson. As freshmen we had to work really hard to try to keep up with the upper school- mates. Joining us this year were Cean Carter, Robert Dufiant, Rutledge DuRant, Milton Garnett, Benny Hodge, ,lack Hodge, Gloria Lloyd, and Betty Ann Witherspoon. As sophomores we had to start working to get those sixteen credit units that are required in order to graduate. A great problem faced us during our junior year. We had to raise money to give the Junior-Senior banquet. With the help of Mrs, Bradham and Miss Shealy we ac- complished what we termed ua huge successf' '4Moonlight and Roses was the theme carried out in every detail. We welcomed Harriett Pack into our camp this year. The class of 755 now began the last of its twelve years. We began at once to raise money for the now annual Senior Trip. T Several days before the Christmas holidays began, a formal presentation of our long coveted rings was held in the gymatorium. How proud we were to walk up to claim our rings from the president, Robert DuRant. Though there were tears in our eyes on our graduation night, we were both sad and happy. Although we are no longer a part of Manning High, we will always cherish the memory of it. f' BETTIE RICHBKRG Hlslorlan fix JUNIORS H. Charleston 1861-Appomattox 1865 64 Carolina provided that the Clarendon District of Sumter County be set up as a new county and that a committee of five locate the County Seat. The geographical center was chosen by a committee composed of Messrs. Levoy F. Rhame, Joseph Sprott, Dr. Reynolds, Mr. Sid- ney lVlcFaddin, and Mr. lVlcFaddin from Salem. Captain Joseph Burgess made the sur- vey and the name came from the Manning family of Clarendon who furnished several Governors of South Carolina. Annually, the students of Manning intensify their historical interest with a trip to the Nation's Capl- tol and to New York.
