Qffessage To The Class of 1952 - The graduating class of this year is called upon to face problems more critical than any before in the history of our nation. In scope these problems range from local to international. Were it not for our profound belief in justice and fair play and our faith in God, we would, in all probability despair. Throughout the last several years we have tried to hold up before you the highest ideals possessed in our glorious heritage and to furnish you with the training needed to carry you through these trying times unimpaired by selfishness, littleness of spirit, or hatred. My best advice to you is In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy ways. W. B. CROWLEY OLIVE P. DICKSON F. M On a warm September day in 1940, a group of merry little youngsters bounded happily into Miss Rose's room to begin their first year of school. Those remaining of the original class are Jack Bomar, Bobby Clark, Nell DuBose, Mary Hodge, Muriel Holladay, Ruth Jones, Jimmie Mitchell, Sarah Moye, Ruth Rich, Douglas Richburg, Dora Ridgill, Doris Ridgill, John Riggs, Mildred Ann Ross. Frances Thames, Sylvia Thigpen and May Thomas, I, Camille Eadon, joined the class in the latter part of the first grade. During our second year we mastered - - or thought we had - - our reading, writing, and 'rithmetic. Ann Jones joined our cheerful group in the second grade. We all agreed that the third, fourth, and fifth grades were hard - - especially those arithmetic and spelling drills. During the fourth grade Peggy Cantey and Pauline Richburg made their entrance, and Russel Carter and Mildred Thames joined us in the fifth. In the sixth and seventh grades we presented two successful plays, The Byrds' Christmas Carroll' and Raspberry Red . They were so successful, in fact, that we were requested to give them a second time so that the high school could see them. At the closing of our seventh year, we held our graduation exercises. This was the happiest and most im- portant event of our grammar school career and we felt pretty proud as we marched down the aisle, knowing all eyes were upon us. Jimmy Mitchell was valedictorian and Peggy Cantey was salutatorian. Paul Floyd, John Geddings, and Idell Edwards were added to our class in the seventh grade. High school at last! Our happy gang, slightly lost and bewildered, at last entered the spacious halls of Manning High. Our class increased quite a bit this year, for we were joined by Joel Batson, Robert Benson, J.C. Britton, Paul Burke, Paul Fann, Alice Burke, Dorothy Carter, Mary DuBose, Betty McCabe and Martha Ann Spigner from Alcolu, Reginald Chewning and Jayne Teed from Jordan, and Willie Herlong from Paxville. Clyde Ardis, Charles Graham, Harold Richburg, Carolyn Simpson, and Hannah Timmons also joined us during our sub- freshman year. As freshmen we entered the ninth grade with a little knowledge of what high school life was like. We began joining the various clubs and going out for sports. It was during the previous year that Mr. Pruitt came to Manning and organized the band, which has been a great credit to Manning High School. Some of our class participated in the band. Hubert Avin, and Sylvia Anne Lee came to us in the ninth grade. Our sophomore year brought us both sorrow and happiness. Although we lost our beloved principal, Mr. Boroughs, and our superintendent, Mr. Mayer, Mr. Bedenbaugh, and Mr. Weldon soon took their places in our hearts and gained our love and respect. The class gave a play that year entitled, Make Room for Rodney under the direction of Mrs. Bradham, Joining us in the tenth grade were Harold Spigner and Joe Wilson. A A great problem faced us during our Junior year. What WOULD we do to raise money to give the Junior- Senior Banquet? The auditorium had been torn down and new rooms built in its place, so a Junior play wasout of the question. We raised money by selling magazines and chose the Gay Nineties' as our banquet theme The big night came and we were proud of the splendid job we'd done. Ann DuRant, Marvin Timmons, and Bobby Thigpen joined us that year. AND NOW WE WERE SENIORSI Our happiest, yet saddest year! We knew we would be leaving Manning High in June, yet we workedhard with the purpose of achieving our first real goal. Right away we began work on the MAHISCAN, now a high school project, but supervised by the Senior staff. Our rings arrived and as we proudly displayed these precious symbols of our Seniority, we felt that we were now really and truly Seniors. We thanked the Juniors for the lovely Junior - Senior Banquet they gave us, and we'llnever stop talking about our Senior trip. To our Senior Class sponsors, Mrs. Lesesne and Miss Carlisle, go our sincerest affection and appreciation for their unfalterlng efforts to make our Senior year successful. ' Though there were tears in our eyes on our graduation night, we were prouder than ever, for although we were no longer students at Manning High, we had become an indelible part of it.
