Building located at 16th and Catherine Streets in Philadelphia. Dr. E. Schuyler English was the first president, and Dr. Philip Austin, the first dean. Bri f Hi tory of Manna Bible In titute The school moved in October of 1945 to the Galilee Mission at 8th and Vine Streets. A num- ber of changes in personnel took place during this time with Dr. English being required to give his full at- tention tothe publishing of the Pilgrim Bible and Dr. Austin having moved to a pastorate in Reading, Pennsylvania. Mr. A.J. Stewart, then President of the Sunday Breakfast Association, was elected as the new president and Dr. James O. Palmer, then Pastor of the Gospel Taber- nacle of Chester, became the new dean. ln 1946 Miss Emily D. Smith, who was Correspondence Editor of The Sunday School Times was added to the staff as a teacher. During this time and under the supervision of Miss Smith, the curriculum was changed from a two-year program to a full four-year curriculum comparable to the Standard Evening Bible School program accepted by most of the Bible Schools of the nation. On October 20, 1974 the Board of Directors decided to in- corporate and this was con- summated shortly thereafter, with Mr. J. Willlson Smith retained as attorney. On June 10, 1948 we graduated our first class with Commencement exercises held in the New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Philadelphia. On November 1, 1948 our char- ter was granted to us by the State of Delaware with a change in mae from Manna Bible School to Manna Bible Institute. On January 14, 1949 we were registered as non-profit cor- poration in the State of Penn- sylvania. The enrollment by now had increased to 64 students. Up to this point, Manna Bible Institute was compelled to make use of rented quarters exclusively, but in 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Moore, mem- bers of our Board of Directors, gave us their home at 611 N. 53rd Street. Thus in December of 1951, we held our first classes in our own building with an enrollment now grown to 85 students. ln 1952 Mr. A.J. Stewart resigned as President and Dr. James O. Palmer took over his duties, acting in the dual capacities of President and Dean. Under the able direction of Dr. Palmer, the school established itself as a Christian institution deeply identified in and with the evangelical groups in and around Philadelphia. In May of 1958 Dr. Palmer became the Executive Director of the American Scripture Gift Mission and severed his con- nection with the school. Rev. Ft. He was elected to the offices of Vice-President and Dean in November of 1962 and con- tinued to be a great influence on the faculty and student body, serving faithfully until his sudden death in May of 1967. Mr. Vaughn Smith succeeded Dr. Palmer as President in 1958. During his ad- ministration Manna continued to grow in numbers and to ex- tend its influence in the Christian community. In 1964 Mr. Smith moved to Florida and the Flev. Wm. L. Banks became Manna's fifth President and served for two years until the pressures of church duties forced him to resign that office. In June of 1967, the Ftev. Harvey P. Davis was elected President of the School. ln June of 1968, the Rev. Wm. L. Banks was elec- ted Dean. Under his leader- ship, the curriculum of the Standard Bible Course was up- dated and expanded and changed from 3 terms to 2 terms a year. Due to a call to serve on the faculty of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Mr. Banks resigned and in January of 1970 the Rev. David W. Haas was elected Dean. ln 1958 Manna Bible Institute moved to larger quarters at 866 North Forty-first Street. Af- ter thirteen years of steady growth, it became evident that a larger building was necessary to accommodate our student body which num- bered nearly 200. Many months of praying and seeking resulted in the purchase of an old school building at 2637 J' 6116174 North 4th Street. The Supply of this more adequate facility has enabled the Institute to provide effective Christian education for 250 students through the dedicated efforts of more than 30 volunteer teachers. Due to the growing realization of the need to provide quality education on the Bible in- stitute level for Christian young people of minority groups who desire to train for Christian service, the Board of Directors moved to proceed toward starting a day school program in the fall of 1973. Thus on January 15, 1973, the Board extended the call to Dr. Gerald L. Stover of Lansdale, Pennsylvania to become Manna's first Dean of Day School. The day school is a four-year, post-high school Bible institute offering majors in three fields: Pastoral Studies, Christian Education, and Missions. A day school catalog containing further in- formation is available upon request. Manna is again on the move towards expansion. In the spring of 1974, the Philadelphia Divinity School, 42nd and Spruce Streets was offered to us for 2.8 million dollars. Many prayed for this property, which we felt would meet our growing needs, but the price was beyond us. We had a sensitivity from the Lord not to pursue this any further. if Then, behold, in answer to prayer, another property was offered to us. This time, receiving a positive sensitivity from the Lord, we signed an agreement of sale for the pur- chase of the Ancilla Domini Academy at 700 E. Church Lane in Germantown. This :, I - ,fill ..- . 411 A I ga , EAW, M Y' lilillll' -1 43 mari.. property has seven acres of land, six buildings, classrooms, a dining room, auditorium, gymnasium, and the possibility of developing a dormitory for our day students. The asking price was S450,000, but they accepted our offer of S325,000. Now we need S5500,000 by July 1, 1975 for settlement, and ex- penses of moving, repairs, renovations, equipment and a science lab. This will allow our school to continue without a mortgage. We are praying for the Lord's guidance and your help. . f - ' A ' ' in I fp -fix . How many people do you know that are hard working and yet have little to show for their labor? With the nation lsrael, God had instructed them to rebuild the Temple. This was to be their first order of business after their release from captivity, but they became involved in building homes for their families, providing food and doing other things that they felt were more important, These things were not wrong in themselves, but they should not have taken priority over what God wanted them to do. They did not feel that they were disobeying God, they felt that in due time they would get around to the job of rebuilding the Temple. God, through His prophet, ex- plained that because they worked on these other matters first, the work they did would not accomplish what they wan- ted. Let me paraphrase what he, God's servant, is saying in verse six of chapter one. You work hard and have little to show for it, you possess things and are not satisfied, you take in spiritual water and you never become full, you clothe yourself in your own righteousness and are not warm, and your money goes through your pocket like it had a hole in it. Perhaps now would be a good time for you to think about these words and apply the situation to your own life. God 'has given to you and every Christian instruction to first win souls. This should be for every Christian the first or- der of business. Over the past four years you have prepared yourself for this task. You have the assurance that as you are faithful in doing this work for The Lord, He will bless the other parts of your life. Harvey P. Davis - Qu-f-if Word From Amidst the joy of reaching the successful conclusion of your course at lvlanna, l would pass on to each of you a word of warning from Proverbs 10:5 - He that gathereth in summer is a wise son, but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causefh shame. The primary application con- cerns the necessity of ap- plying oneself and working hard in life, using the farmer's situation of harvest time to illustrate the point. However, the principle contained in this verse has a wider application in the spiritual realm that I wish to share with you. First of all, the word gathereth speaks of in- volvement. The wise person is one who is actively par- ticipating in harvesting. Sum- mer refers to a definite period of opportunity. When a crop is ready it must be harvested or it is lost. Son represents that person who through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ is a permanent member of the family of God. Only true Christians can participate in this harvest. He that sleepeth is the Christian who does not take part in win- ning souls to Christ. The shame is that which is ex- perienced by the non- participating Christian. It is the shame that begins in a wasted life now and culminates in the agony of regret at the judgement seat of Christ. I want you to remember that each one of you HAS to be in- volved in harvesting souls for Christ if you are to be a wise child of God. Singing in the choir is fine: being an usher is good: but that is not har- vesting. You must launch out The Dean and get involved in grappling with the souls of lost people. You must speak to people, help people understand, pray with people, weep over people - yes, give yourself to winning souls to Christ. This MUST be your top priority in life. The time of harvest is now. Please do not be a foolish Christian, a dissapointing lvlanna graduate. Get out there and start har- vesting! X ,, jf U .V ew 'R- .,:.5.: .-.. -, . 4 . A rg .... Village work is one of the highlights of their work. As they go into the surrounding villages you can see how Satan has the people's mind so bound. They thank God that the Gospel which is the Power of God is able to break Satan's power. To that we add our amen. School is open from March un- til the first week in December. Gwendolyn has made many trips to the surrounding villages. The boys' dormitory is almost completed which they were helping others to build. They are constantlymaking repairs on other buildings on the mission station. The Lord has blessed them with a new addition to their family. They are also in the process of adopting a seven year old boy who was brought to the mission by his father. We praise God for using them as instruments in His hands. Fellowship The batter stands poised waiting for the ball . . . a white blur thrust from the pitcher's hand. Anticipation! Two men sit gazing intently with wrinkled brows ... studying the chessboard for the next move and response. Concentration! The tears of pain and the ache of discomfort are replaced with the radiant warmth of a smile at the newborn. Jubilation! The white sphere that soars into an open space for a hit. . . or that disappears into the distant stands marks victory for the anticipation of waiting. Class dvisor The smile that breaks through the etched lines of deter- mination as one person says checkmate signals victory for the periods of con- centration. The decision ofthe new arrival in the family to receive the Christ of Calvary by the picture of Him seen in its parents usher victory from the joys of jubilation. The hitter could not ac- complish his feat consistently without preparation. Training and disciplines are needed to put the edge on anticipation which would produce victory. One does not become a master at chess by hap- penstance. Many hours and years are spent to channel the thrust of thought in con- centration to produce victory. The child is not born at the moment it is conceived. The period of time builds to the crescendo of jubilation which produces victory. Anticipation, concentration, jubilation the fore-runners of victory serve yet another illustration. Everyone who is first born anticipates a full and complete life. The time span in years have no bearing on fullness and completion. Many persons have lived in less years, much more fuller and complete lives than others who have the accumulation of many years. The fullest and completeness of life is realized by the second birth born anew! We an- ticipated this miracle of God even before we knew of His doing the work in Christ for us. Being born again stamps an- ticipation with victory. An ex- tention to the new birth is growth. Thinking God's thought after Him is meditation or concentration. The focus of our mind power being on things above. The purposeful looking unto the Author and Finisher of our Faith and concentration which enables us to press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ. Con- centration is swallowed up in victory. The shout from Glory . . .sound of the trump of God being caught up changed . . . jubilation . .. victory! When faith is made sight the world shall see the victory which we have as believers. Expected anticipation: thought on concentration: rejoice in . . .jubilation . . .vic- tory. The fields being ready indicate many who also are called to join us. Forward to labor in God's vineyard the harvest is near . . . Class History September 1971 Memories of our old school are short but pleasant ones. There were the crowded stairways leading to the upper classmen's classroomsg the congested porch where we awaited friends at the close of classes, and the fresh- men's basement classroom where church pews served as seats, our laps took the place of desks, and the pur- pose of our gathering was to study the Word of God. We thank God for the op- portunity given us to unite in fellowship around His Divine Word. In accordance with II Timothy 2:15, Study to show thyself approved unto God . . we obeyed. Thus began the first term of the graduating class of 1975 at Manna Bible Institute. As the school years passed, many changes came about - some that brought smiles and some that brought tears, but all bringing glory to God. Various circumstances cut our class number to less than half of what it was on that first anticipation-filled day. The Lord called three of our sisters home. Then we remember Gwen John- son and her husband Raymond, whom God chose to serve on the mission fields of Liberia in West Africa. What began as a group ofpeople gathered to study the Word of God quickly blossomed into a real family of believers! Class Projects and Events 1971-1972 As a project of Study Missionary Fel- lowship, several of us par- ticipated in evangelizing the neighborhood surroun- ding our school. 1972-1973 At the close of our spring semester we honored Raymond and Gwendolyn Johnson at a class-given supper. That same year we began a crusade for Christ at the Cheyney Shelter for Girls. Rev. Taylor and Rev. Cart- wright joined in the crusade, working with several of us who labored there. 1973-1974 To our mission- aries, Raymond and Gwen Johnson, we sent money and supplies. A monetary donation was also collected for the Christian Day School of Philadelphia. And several of us responded to the call of l'help in Dover, Delaware in an effort to evangelize that city. The fellowship of our class was strengthened by Prayer Breakfasts held at the homes of several of our students. These as well as the studies, exams, term papers and sharing of per- sonal problems all con- tributed to the closeness of our class. ,Manna was not only a place for fellowship and friendship, but for courtship, too. As the Holy Spirit united hearts in service for Christ, He also united hearts in matrimony for: Hector and Sara Torres Joseph and Phyllis Thompson Charlie and Barbara Begely Warren and Constance Robinson Ronald and Donna Johnson The understanding, dedication and patience of the faculty made our struggle to gain knowledge easier to bear! Their knowledge of God's Word coupled with their living testimonies has indeed made our lives richer, in- creased our knowledge of the Saviour, and led us on our way to becoming vessels fit for the Master's use. Men and women must be thrust out into the harvest field including the inner city and even the uttermost part of the earth.
